What sounds absurd now, sounded reasonable back in the days, and what currently sound "practical", "reasonable" now will sound crazy in a couple of years, this is why I gave up on self help concept long time ago no more how to's or methods.

We pulled over 2,600 studies and ranked 19 of the most common self-improvement techniques across three dimensions: research quality, consistency of results, and actual effect size. Then we sorted them into four tiers: legitimately works, works sometimes, probably not helping, and straight up bullshit. Microdosing landed in the bullshit tier. Crystal healing outperformed several "serious" techniques. And the number one most effective strategy is something so stupidly simple it's almost annoying.
"Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway" is my all time fav self help book and my fav quote and advice!

how can he say microdose psychedelics is bullshit if someone feels they're getting into their creative side by doing it and they feel like they're calmer and a better person than they are. just cuz you have some study that says there aren't doesn't invalidate their own personal experience. I call total bullshit on that one.

I always found the concept learning styles so dumb even as a kid in school, it depends on the topic which style is best to teach it in! And probably a mixture of all of them being used will make the information stick

I was a badly bullied kid, and I had a crippling lack of social self-confidence throughout my adolescence. At about age 17, I decided to just start acting like someone who had self confidence. The change was gradual, but over time, my simulated self confidence became real. As an adult, I have been a salesman and actor, and my self confidence is probably bordering on being insufferable. At the time, I hadn't heard of "fake it till you make it", but when I eventually did, I knew it worked.

Most self improvement content out there is just an Ouroboros of the same old topics and talking points, neatly packaged by which ever creator you follow, presenting it as a sort of miracle new idea that should help solve all your problems in life.

What about Michael Pollen ?
@jobrown-b8rThe “just do it” philosophy 🤣 I’m a very highly sensitive person and I’ve tried every single thing listed, I am an advocate for therapy and self help, my brother is simple and tells me “just do it bro, think you are a stupid person and get yourself and do stuff doesnt matter if you do it right or wrong” we often lose time doing other stuff and ruminating on emotions
@psic.iovannacobian6554Hi Mark Manson,
I just wanted to say I love your videos—I’ve been watching you for a really long time. I also bought your book recently, and I really appreciate what makes you different.
What I like about you is that you actually say things people don’t usually say. You go beyond the surface—even the way you phrase things feels like you’re saying what people are really thinking about what others think, if that makes sense. It’s honestly so refreshing.
I’ve watched tons of motivation and self-help videos, and most of them feel the same. But with you, even when the topic sounds similar, the content is completely different—and it actually changes something. I genuinely feel different after watching your videos, and that’s kind of amazing. So thank you for that.
I was also thinking: there’s one area you haven’t really covered (at least not in a focused way), which is school—like how to study effectively, how to stay motivated specifically for studying, how to learn better, etc.
It seems like a lot of your audience is pretty young, and while personal development advice is great, school is something we’re all dealing with constantly. I think it could be really useful if you made a video about studying, but in your style—because most of the content out there just repeats the same generic advice.
Anyway, just an idea—I don’t know if it’s something that would interest you, but I think it could really help a lot of people (including me!).
Thanks again for everything
I’m very surprised that you guys missed the role of the anterior mid cingulate cortex and its role in the will and willpower
@stevewoolridge7383Hi Mark and Drew, I would suggest looking into nervous system regulation and research that's done around that subject and how it connects to for example energy healing. Creating that shift in the nervous system can feel very profound for people, especially the ones that are in high alert mode often and it seems to be linked to how energy healing might be working! I'm quite surprised you haven't touched on nervous system while talking about self help as it seems quite connected to our overall sense of well-being! Also I would love to hear you guys discuss that subject!
@zanetas.3801I like to listen to your podcasts but don't quote Jordan Petersen. Canada is deeply ashamed of him. When he talked against abortion, saying young women were too young to make life and death choices but he expected these young women to raise the unwanted children. A true mental case.
@maureenroy4739> 'just do it!'
> but not everyone can 'just do it'
> socialism, because it all comes down to luck, incl. whether anyone can 'just do it'
> be compassionate with those who can't 'just do it'. we progress faster, better, stronger, if we take care of the less capable, regardless of what they do.
This is completely useless. You should've focused on the exceptions. When the BS worked, when the cool stuff failed. Then you'll find something valuable.
@MarcoAguila1988I think that you should be able to rub your crystals as much as you want, Mark. 😆
@biffrodWhat if you just feel tired and like shit most of the time? You have a good day, you crush it… then the next day your brain feels like mush and your body just hurts.
@steven_kingReiki is the ONLY thing I DONT regret indulging in. Everything else I did was not only a waste of time, but hurt relationship AND pushed my real path of healing out several years.
@HeythereitsValeriethanks for the dark mode background
@DaLennyDoodStop waiting for a sign or some magical "inspiration" to hit and just start moving. It is wild how many of us get trapped in this loop of thinking we need to optimize every tiny detail before we are allowed to be successful. We spend way too much time looking for the perfect morning routine or the right crystals while our actual goals just sit there collecting dust. This breakdown is exactly what people need to hear because it stops the sugar-coating and gets straight to what actually works.
The whole idea that motivation comes before action is a total scam. It is actually the other way around. You do not get motivated and then act; you act and then you feel motivated. I have seen this play out a million times in my own projects. The second I stop overthinking and just commit to one tiny task, the momentum kicks in and the "fear" just dies off. It is all about building a pile of evidence for yourself that you are the person who gets things done. Identity follows behavior, not the other way around.
And that bit about eating the frog? That is the real secret to mental clarity. It is not even about being more productive in a business sense. It is about killing that background noise of anxiety that follows you around all day when you know you are dodging the hard stuff. If you can handle the monster by 9 AM, the rest of the day is a total breeze. Most self-help is just a fancy way to avoid that discomfort, but you cannot shortcut the process. If you want the results, you have to be willing to get your hands dirty and just move. Everything else is just a distraction.
Google knows Mr. Manson as "the fuck it guy." Well done! 👏🏻
@PhilipShaw-o5zgreat vid. - I was just like you guys. did all your stuff. at 36 made 1.6 million with my company using ur book and 4 hour work week. 41 now - lost or gave away all the money - due to getting an illness that I thought would be terminal. - miricle healed myself. - but now I want to be one of those cali-hippies that were all supposed hate..... why is that? my never ending chase of "success" was just plain dumb - logically thats only a small part of lifes "pie". why am I forbiden to use self improvement protocols on other aspects of my life? Is it just the internet? or is there some kind of commandment in physics that I am trying to break?
@Rideout_BIts not SELF HELP , its handling emotion part of it 😅😢
@Harvester_462I thought being part of a community was number one. Did I miss that somewhere?
@UnglooProcrastination is resistance to the task, not necessarily because it's boring, but because it challenges your current skills, and there's often uncertainty with how to proceed.
@joaquinh5523Hi Mark, having the research pop up at the bottom is a massive plus for me. I would definitely vote to continue that. Thanks
@culturalsolutions9796I have read that tapping the crystals is the only way to release some kind of frequency from them. That said, I use them as an anchor, for eg. Black tourmaline or onyx reminds me to not apologize for setting healthy boundaries or to release holding resentments, my pink stone reminds me of my dad, and helps me dwell in that positive loving relationship when my dad passed, my green calcite reminds me to take time to repair and dwell in self loving self talk... bonus, my white rabbit reminds me not to go down the rabbit hole - chose your battles. My black onyx is a hexenspiegel ♡
@maidofwires57971:51:30. Yeahhhh i do hate that❤❤😂😂😂😂
@ddesai8100I would love if you guys look into cranial sacral therapy! I dont really understand the modality. I keep getting results every-time I use it my practice. People say it’s like energy work but, it was drilled in my mind by my instructor that it’s not! I’m a little on the woohoo side though so I always include the energy stuff for shits and giggles.
@katelyndavis1094If i can sum up the explanation of just do it: I find that I often look for ideas, plans or strategies to minimize the effort or pain of a task. I dont want to feel dumb learning, i dont want to be exhausted working and I dont want to be bored. I dont want to waste time. I look for ways to do things instead of engaging in the activity, I get distracted by the idea that i can some how make my activities trivial. I still believe, wrongly, that if I some how figure out the secret to all my activities, they will all be easy and always fun. It is a personal bias i am completely blind to. if I had just started doing the thing, i would have either gotten it done sooner, or failed and learned and been done with it sooner. Not to mention, I am fully capable of learning, having a good attitude and can dealing with stress. Hence, If I had just not written this fucking comment out and did my thing, I wouldn't be here, stressing myself out again, wondering why and how to do things.
@xXRacer9000XxFor ADHD person this podcast was damn difficult to follow but it was worth it
@onufry_zagloba_s_pro_max_plusI have been in the energy medicine field for 30 years...and there is empirical research on our energetic fields and the healing benefits of working with these fields. I have personally seen through my work amazing transformation

@tldw8354I'm a part of the Coney Island Polar Bear club and we go swimming in the cold water every sunday from November to April and I definitely agree about the huge social component of it. It's a fun way to reconnect and the cold part does give you a little body high and some good sleep but I think that's kinda it.
@ScottHerderWhy didn`t you include prayer?
