Rat, The Best Pet Mammal?

Video Overview & Insights

Rats are amazingly social and intelligent creatures. They honestly make amazing pets. But is a rat the best pet mammal? And is it the best pet mammal for you?

My younger sister had pet rats, but wasn’t the most attentive pet owner. I ended up taking care of a small colony of rats for a few years before I convinced her to hand them off to a rat breeder.

They were great pets, but escape experts. I had a bunch of fish tanks and terrariums they found their way to from her room, and they’d get trapped. I’d wake to splashing and squeals and then have to carry a wet rat back to the sister’s room.

Our rat named cheese used to get out of his enclosure come find us in bed. He would stand on my chest and push his little feet down to make sure I was awake so someone would play with him. God they are smart and beautiful creatures.

But ... how would a black/roof/fruit rat fare? That's technically more an exotic pet, as any non-domesticated rodent would be, but ... potentially interesting.

I had two rats growing up. Loved them so much and they potty trained themselves! Never had a problem with pooping outside of their bedding other than a dribble of pee here and there. Just so sad they are prone to respiratory problems and have a short lifespan. Miss you Chloe and Zoey!

Pet mice, hamsters, and especially pet rats, are adorable, but they just don't live long enough. It is heartbreaking to lose your sweet pal so soon.

I have 3 rats, 2 of which were feeders. Those two are the sweetest and most social. My dumbo rat is very slow to warm up, but I am sure we will get there!

I can vouch for pet reptiles deciding you have a new pet. My ball python just, refused to eat a feeder we got for her for a few days. Didn't like her vibes, no idea why. So we took her out and got all the kit she needed. Definitely a shy feeder, but never ever bit and she liked to snuggle in the pouch of my hoodie. She lived for two whole years, which I realize now is impressive.

Never.

I'd never own a rat...

I'm not going through the heartbreak of losing my little friends every 2 years.

It's absurd to say you need more than one rat. I know this from much experience. That's all I will say.

Why yes, rats are THE BEST small mammal pets. Much better than guinea pigs or hamsters. My kids had all three, the rats were Blue rats. My MiL gave my kids one for Christmas and it came to us pregnant. Surprise. Baby rats are SOOOOOO cute. They can also have a faint odor.

I 12:41 have a rat . Mr Butler. He is probably the best pet very loved and adored. He is so clever and loving who has a beautiful girlfriend miss Ivory. They are together 3 days a week on p lay dates. But I love my time alone with him. The only comment not spoken about is how in particular ly destructive my Mr Butler is . He has eaten his way through my studio as he is free run. He has loads of toys and chew toys but loves to just chew in general. I DONT CARE ANY MORE. HE IS WORTH IT.

Look at those babies 😍😍😍😍😍 omg. I have always loved rats. Ive had over 24 total over my childhood..sadly they don't live super long. . They make wonderful pets!!❤ Wish they lived longer tho.

@Elisabeta833

Natures cruelest joke.
The absolute best pet and companion you can have and then they have such a short life of 2-3 years. 4-5 at the absolute most if you take REALLY good care of them and are lucky somewhere.

I had so many rats in my life. NONE EVER bit me. At least never seriously. A nibble mostly when i had something on my finger and they got overly excited about food. Never seriously. Never did they draw blood. And from 14 rats i had in my life time, it was maybe 2-3 times that this happened.
Tells you everything about them.

And to make it clear. They DID know what they did and apologized right after. Licking me all over and cuddling up. And no i was NEVER mad at them.
The last 3 i had i built a massive cage for them they could roam in. It took up like 1/8 of my room back then but i didn't care. Had a massive branch in there too at shoulder height. Whenever i had the front of the cage open, i would just have to move my shoulder to the branch and they all instantly hurried up to climb onto me.
I was even able to go outside with them. Sit down in the grass. Let them explore a bit. But they NEVER moved away too far from me. They had every chance to run away if they wanted to.

Upsetting that they have such a short lifespan and are prone to get tumors towards higher ages..

@Derethevil
@

Yeah the lifespan thing is the kicker.
Same with goldfish, good when young to learn the concept of death, but damn does it suck not to have them longer.

@hollowedboi5937
@

I had 2 rats growing up - some of the best pets. Easy to keep, though the smell can become a thing. Both of mine lived to nearly 4 years old.

Wouldn't own them again. Relatively short life, extreme guilt if you don't let them out. Both ended up with tumours

@MelodicTurtleMetal
@

1:57 I had a massive bastard (affectionate) rat named donut who bit me, it felt like closing my finger in a door almost. He acted like he paid rent with how much evil behavior he committed

@eldritchcupcakes3195
@

I loved them so much as a kid, and I'm looking to possibly transition to rats. We definitely didn't give them enough time outside the cage as kids, so I'd love to see some happy carefree house rats in a place I own

the camera cutting between her looking like shes about to try climbing his shirt to her being suddenly somewhere else on the table with Clint's hand suspiciously right next to her sends me every time lol

@thebootycallofcthulhu826
@

The biggest dissadvntage of pet rats is their lifespan

@octapusxft
@

The short lifespan is the deal breaker for me. Ain't no way you get to die on me right after I get attached to you.

@ThisIsAUsername69
@

The life span is really the entire reason I know I can't have rats. I couldn't handle heartbreak that frequently. A few of my reptiles are coming towards their end of life and I regularly dread the impending loss of my babies. I can already imagine how terrible that would be for me personally to have that feeling from the first moment I got a rat.

@KDHDmentality
@

I have 22 rats currently. Girls and boys. Definitely my favourite. They are litter trained and beautiful little souls. Only things bad about them is the life span and sickness. They break your heart when they leave.

Pet Rats and pet Mice are fantastic animals. However don't be fooled into thinking they are beginner pets. You need to be on top of their care. However if you give them the proper space and care, the Rats are practically mini dogs with Mice being mini Cats.

I've have a dog that was my entire world, I loved him so incredibly much. And yet, my ratties were my favourite pets ever. I loved my rats so much, that I couldn't handle the heartbreak after they died. They are that amazing. They are so quick to learn tricks, my boys learned spin, fetch, and their names. They are so incredibly loving. Every time I got home, they wanted cuddles. They gave kisses even to my family the very first time they met them. The only thing to know is - do NOT keep them alone. Two of the same sex is essential, aka, two boys or girls
