CPU inventor and physicist Federico Faggin, together with Prof. Giacomo Mauro D'Ariano, proposes that consciousness is not an emergent property of the brain, but a fundamental aspect of reality itself: quantum fields are conscious and have free will. In this theory, our physical body is a quantum-classical ‘machine,’ operated by free will decisions of quantum fields. Faggin calls the theory 'Quantum Information Panpsychism' (QIP) and claims that it can give us testable predictions in the near future. If the theory is correct, it not only will be the most accurate theory of consciousness, it will also solve mysteries around the interpretation of quantum mechanics.

Imagine you're playing a video game. Your character runs around in the game world, but you (the conscious player) are outside the screen controlling it. The character isn't "aware" — you are. Faggin suggests something similar: your body is the character, and your true consciousness is like the player operating from a deeper quantum level.

Sincerely, I always had the feeling that consciousness is a continuum. It starts with simple agency. A bacteria can perceive their environment and take actions based on that. Of course, it is purely chemistry. But we still call it alive. When that phenomena condensates, you get cells that can coordinate activity in multicelular organisms. Them you get specialized cells that can do even better data processing called neurons. Them you get beings with not just reactive but predictive properties. Beings that can predict how they should act now based on what is predicted to happen. Them you get light consciousness. It stops being about only surviving. Crows for example collect shiny things and there is apparently no logical and evolutionary reason for them to do so. There are a lot more steps in between. But the final outcome is full consciousness. With that cames the ability to abstract more and more and create complex strategies.
The point is, it seems to be a continuous process... Can you predict with 100% certainty the next movements of bacteria given initial conditions? Or is it affected by quantum random interactions? Maybe the real definition of life is something that starts showing signals of agency.
I know this is just ramblings. But it is fair to pursue those questions and try to find experiments to find the right answer.
Those kinds of hypothesis face a lot of criticism. Sometimes warranted, when someone don't want to produce evidence for it and just says it is right, and sometimes just because the first case is very common and scientists are people with the very normal failing of grouping together different things because they look similar.

@LCD369ClaimTheDensityI am not a physicist therefore I can’t debate whether the claims presented in this interview are sound scientifically or not. However, at the metaphysical level, I agree. If consciousness is the precondition for mathematics, then mathematics alone cannot provide a complete, non-circular account of consciousness. This also aligns with Gödel's incompleteness theorems: any sufficiently rich formal system has truths it cannot prove from within. Consciousness generating mathematics may be analogous — the generator exceeds what the generated system can express. Therefore we have to consider the possibility that we may never be able to prove or disprove free will nor explain consciousness in a satisfying manner.

@bcesjocWith your various interests, you might like Mad Artist Disease by Mary Hammond, which goes into how mercury influenced art. They used sulfur and mercury to create beautiful red color called vermillion. Also mercury was part of alchemy and making of philosopher’s stone. There’s also thought that writers like Emily Dickenson and Lewis Carroll were impacted by use of mercury as medicine in those days.

@sovereignty14Many years ago, I had a related but not love experience in a situation when I was fighting for my life. I left my body and there was a split in which I observed what was happening from both perespectives, the one on the ground and another from outside. The observer above helped think in slow motion what to do and calculate the specifics and what were my chances to survive. Both integrated in action on these calculations and I am alive. I would love to learn what it was, I have no explanation

I have a mother and a mother-in-law that are in long term care for dementia.
Computers are a great way to find information and simulate outcomes of any source .. civilization in the future will be so dependant of computers just to live a normal life which we all see in real time its all for a "like" imagine what will happen in the future with a blackout and some people just know how to depend on a computer.
