Putin's war on Ukraine, explained

Video Overview & Insights

Ukraine is under attack. Follow Vox for the latest: https://bit.ly/3Kcg9Nb

Correction, March 3, 2022: A previous version of this video stated that NATO was brought to Russia's borders for the “first time” in 2004 when Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania joined NATO. That was incorrect because Norway shares a border with Russia and has been in NATO since 1949. We’ve corrected that line at 3:36 to emphasize the importance of former Soviet republics on Russia's border joining NATO for the first time.

We've also clarified that this is one of Europe's largest wars since World War II. We value your feedback in the comments and appreciate you bringing these points to our attention.

On February 24th, Russia launched a military invasion of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin called it a “special military operation,” but the scale of the attack shows this is a full-scale war that has already caused more than 100 casualties and forced more than half a million Ukrainians to flee their homes.

Why aren’t there as many protests for Ukraine as there are for Palestine?

— @Blackbird121-2ny

Ukraine and Russia’s conflict goes back to 2014, when Russia invaded and annexed Crimea and Russian-backed separatist forces took over parts of southeastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. But to understand the full context behind the invasion, it’s important to go even farther back, to the time when Europe’s current-day divisions began, and see how that shaped Europe’s power balance today.

To understand the current conflict’s history in less than 10 minutes, watch the video above.

Hows the 2 week military operation working out? 😂

Putin tried everything for years to get nato to not expand closer to russia but the more he tried the more countries joined nato and if ukraine joined that would put nuclear weapons on putins doorstep and thats why putin invaded but now its not as simple as not joining nato now putin wants ukraine to disarm and he wants ukraines military to join russias to create a powerhouse

To understand Putin’s grip on power, we recommend this book:

Something important that Vox hasn’t stated out about NATO expansion is that, many countries within Europe ever since the Napoleonic wars have experienced wars involving the Russian Empire under the Tsars autocratic rule, and many of these countries were annexed as autonomous regions within the Russian Empire.

During the Tsars rule, they tried to Russianize lots of these regions, forcing Russian to be the official language and wiping out their own language, this was fairly common in Poland and Finland which were both autonomous regions after Napoleons failed invasion of the Russian Empire.

So after lots of them which eventually got their independence from the Soviets or Russian federation, many DIDN’T trust Russia due to their history with these wars of Imperialism, so they all wanted to ensure protection from Russia since NATOs main goal was to DEFEND any invasion from Russia which NATO and Russia were still around, unlike many satellite Soviet states and Warsaw pact all collapsed.

Finland and Sweden for example were both well aware of their history with Russia, they’ve gone to war with them and both sides didn’t have such a great experience especially for Finland which was ceded to them

But what’s truely saddening is that, Ukrainian civilians are the ones suffering, and many Russians heavily oppose it but cannot do anything in stopping it.

So Ukraine lost the war, never would I have guessed that 2030 would be the country’s demise. I remember in around early 2022 hearing about the war starting, paranoid over nuclear catastrophe yet now I laugh tears of sorrow and joy. Russia is on a mission, and it’s frightening…

3:24 from here, 1999 NATO expands. And the old sphere of influence joins NATO. Ukrainians wants to join NATO and be part of the EU - European nations . But ukraine government doesn’t sign in 2013. Ukrainian government doesn’t like the nation state , they support Russia. Ukrainians protest, government kills 100 Ukrainians. President is kicked out in 2014.
In 2022, Putin demanded NATO to get rid of its expansions, NATO instead enforced more military.

Putin thinks and is determined to see that Russians (not to mention Ukrainians) may not be European. He's chained elsewhere like a Prometheus. In styling himself as a hero, he's become the recalcitrant non-conformist who is still killing people. The Eurothodoxy is not happy and ... maybe the gods are angry.

Just love and peace in true essence. Not a phrase that's coined. Think about that last ve peace. GRACE GRACE GRACE. Why we so ungrateful myself included 😢
