Portugal’s New Tax-Free Scheme - NHR 2.0: Do You Qualify? (April 2025)
Video Overview & Insights
A new tax free initiative has been introduced in Portugal: the Incentive for Scientific Research and Innovation (IFICI), informally known as “NHR 2.0.”
Laws change, check what’s going on right now they have just revamped their entire immigration portal for residency like any country. They can choose at any moment to change the rule rules.
NHR 2.0: Now Open for Applications
With applications now open, many are wondering: What are the benefits and who is eligible?
IFICI is very narrow compared to classic NHR. The scientific research angle filters out most retirees and remote workers who thought they would qualify. Anyone moving now should run their actual activity code against the eligible categories before planning around it.

01:29 IFICI or “NHR 2.0”
In Portugal, real estate speculation by non residents made impossible for locals to buy or rent a house. Severe taxation on second homes being bought here as a speculative investment should happen

Listen to many tax advisor and lawyers, still have o clue. I am a software developer who work remotely for an USA company. My personal income is 6600 usd per month. If I got d8 visa and move to Portugal how much ı am gone pay as income tax and social security payments. Bonus: I have a wife and no children. I am a Turkish citizen and I already take advantage of current tax regime in Turkey. For the all Software developer who work remotely and get money in foreign currency only pay tax for %20 of your income - which annualy it means only %10 total and no VAT. Curious about will it be worth to move Portugal

Hi Mark, I was granted NHR in 2022. If I buy NS&I Premium Bonds are the prizes/wins tax free under the NHR Scheme? If not how much would I be taxed? Many thanks!

Amazing video! Very useful!

Hi! Quick question if you don’t mind 🙏
I’m a Hungarian citizen living in Germany, planning to move to Portugal under NHR 2.0. I run a Shopify business + YouTube channel (planning to sell courses too).
I’m using a UK LLP company (with 2 partners), registered with a UK virtual office + accounting — so it’s managed from the UK, not Portugal.
👉 My question:
Would this count as foreign income and qualify for 0% tax under NHR, or would there still be some % tax?
Also, would an LLC be a better structure than an LLP in this case?
Thanks a lot in advance 🙌

@adriangrieves2186This guy looks like he's great at tax and finances in Portugal and I dig that about him!
@cdeesLove the content of the video, but it was a poor place to film in terms of audio quality. There's a clear echo, and on my PC speakers some bits are a more difficult to hear and understand
@Doobie0113Taxes in Portugal are extremely high and the bureaucracy arround it horrible. Portugal is a scam do not invest any money in this fascist system
@AAT305Tell people that capital gain on your holdings outside of Portugal are taxable. I got caught and the surprise really hurts.
@raylaborie3863Hi Mark. I don’t see contact details or I’m missing them. Can you share an email address please so I can contact you. Thanks. Joe
@joemcgowan8621Hidden tax everywhere starting with 23% of everything you spend.. Our health system does not really work for major problems so our expensive private hospitals await you 👹
@Joao_133Hi Marc , please how can I contact your services. I am interested. Thank you
@kathussiachagas2255Hi, thanks for the video. How can I contact you for tax advice?
@Greg_HamillThere is no such thing as a Tax 0% in Portugal mate. It’s not Dubai
@tiagovalente6506Great bring in the tech heads curry chefs and terrorists .....dont go the same direction as the rest of europe😊
@nikkk7043Portugal does NOT need any more people coming here. House prices have sky rocketed making it extremely hard for the Portuguese to afford a house/flat. My Portuguese family now cannot get to see a GP when needed, and the NHS overall is now severely under pressure, because of the amount of immigration, and a lack of doctors in the state sector. Criminality is also on the increase, partly because living here is not cheap, and access to benefits is difficult (the country is not rich). And when please tell me will you stop referring to British immigrants as expats? An expat is someone who because of political or other reasons has been forced to exile his/her own country. The word éxpat´smacks of elitism.
@ProgNosis_JDWould moving to Portugal for a role in Finance fit the criteria for being eligible for NHR 2.0?
@DanielSilva-tk8bfIF YOU RICH AND GO TO LISBON, ITS LIKE BANGLADESH.. YOU GET ROBBED EVERYWHERE . PEOPLE ABANDONING THE PLACE AT SPEED
@PEACEANDLOVEMAKELOVENOTWARGood afternoon and thank you for your very informative UTube advice videos. I’m in the process of applying for a D7 residency visa and I’m looking for tax advice in relation to my residency if successful. Please advise as how I engage you on providing private advice - many thanks Stephen
@steveparry2795Hi - do you offer services? I am relocating to Portugal and believe I am eligible for NHR 2.0 but I do have some additional questions. I sent you an email, thank you!
@Marco-hq7puGreat video Mark
@nicwilliams00Do tech workers qualify if they're employees of a remote business?
Or is it only if they're contractors and have a limited business through which they they provide services?
Useless for retirees from the USA...confusing, but that's socialism. Stay away.
@saintpreferred9223Very good video with great content; well done!
@bherdeiroMark are you a Bitcoiner? Your tie says you are all in.
@thewholeshabang181To many muslims and crime, no thx.
@retirednSpecifically, designed for Pakistan and Bangladesh
@EddyManfredBe realistic people 😉
@mariacuachon3906The only issue is that Portugal is in the EU.
So it’s impacted with the same deluded nonsense as everywhere else in the Eurozone.
Mass immigration, spiralling cost of living, zero energy security, zero social integration, deluded WEF policies.
(And don’t get me started on trying to learn the language)
It is, however, a fabulous place (just needs to leave the EU).
It appears that the local population is extremely excited to have the US and British peoples moving to Portugal and driving up the real estate prices.
“Lisbon looks like Pakistan”
“Don’t move here”
“Stay home”
Etc etc
😂
Looks like lots of love.
How does one get in touch with you to contract your services?
@saturnoretrogradoHow are US ROTH IRAs treated under the new scheme?
@SatWiseJanxDo I qualify as an author of Wikipedia articles?
@tomtom2806Thank you Mark. Great value video!
@JC-lr4ouFew people qualify for the new NHR 2.0 but it's being sold as if the NHR is back. The old system is closed and if you are looking for something similar you should look elsewhere.
@GustafHauRuckStop using the term ex-pats . First there’s immigrants and there are visitors. That’s it unless you are a native.
@paulgilliland2992I am in the US as a 1099 in the medical field. I am hoping to have my visa soon (D7 but will continue working in Portugal). Is SEP considered to be a pension? Thank you. Also howdo I make an appointment with you?
@AA-kf7ufMark, super content. Many thanks for posting your video.
Warmest regards.
Portugal has huge taxes in everything! Telecommunications, gaz, electricity, water, housing, everything! It’s loaded with imigrants illegally, health care is collapsing, education as well!
@user-vu8tk5xx6qSO ACCORDING to this guy we are ALL TREATED AS SLAVES .. AND ECONOMIC SLAVES .. FOR CORPORATE BRITAIN threats from both ststes regarding freedom of movement freedom to choose countries
Totally restricted.. . Through impractical. And over burdomesome regulations
SO YOU SYAY PUT
inyour house and in your town in your county and in upur country
Impingement..or imprisonment on a national scale
I love the thinking re the potential pension treatement but it would feel super risky to rely on that and surely they will just get another ruling or clarify as it sadly seems that the political desire to attract the grey £/$ has gone for time being
@czeitalWhat's the crypto, ISA & SIPP taxation situation like in 2025? 🤙
@SuperDiagnosticHousing costs are horrendous in Portugal now so what you saved on tax will now be given on higher housing costs.
