Parents react as PM Keir Starmer announces ban on social media for under-16s | BBC News

Video Overview & Insights

Keir Starmer says under-16s will be banned from social media by spring 2027.

All these old men in the comments that have such a problem with keeping kids safe is concerning

— @aliceellacowley

"A full ban is the right choice... I am not prepared to compromise on the safety and happiness of our children," Starmer said in a televised statement.

Ban smartphones for children not social media. It's the devices that are addictive. Stop giving your children a smartphone and guarantee you'll see a positive outcome. The powers that be want us to be addicted to these devices for a reason...control of the masses

— @gburgersanon

As he made the statement live in Downing Street he was watched on The BBC Breakfast sofa by seven parents whose children died while using social media.

Isabella doesn't sound like that she's from Tarleton, what's her accent?

It's too late now though for the kids that grew up with it

It is because these people are bad parents and want the government to protect their kids that has given the government an excuse to ruin the internet .

It's a very moot point. I was on a quite crowded train yesterday and I was aware of some youngish kids with mobile phone. I don't know what they were watching. But there were loud female screams and which they just looked blankly and impassively on. I think things on sights are harmful. They can?
Remove you from yourself, your natural feeling.. How to enforce any ban? Kids know more about technology than adults. i think it is really a full time jobs for parents to be nosey. Plus! Watch you watch yourself and how you might react to it. So maybe we should check ourselves? Things get passed on, like bad habits. The adults set the tone , yeah, with some liberality. Though, anything making you feel iffy or uneasy, stamp it out. Explain why. i think life is about independence, doing things, taking part, enhancing our natural senses. Too much information will not only mesmerise us but nullify us.
Have we reached a limit of personal development? Who is filling the gaps?

I won't just silently go along with this my children will have less freedom an less rights , this isn't about protection it's about control , and as usual Stalin Starmer trying to bring in through the back door digital i.d an total cashless society , and to control narrative on Israel's genocide in Gaza an middle east , disgusting, we never voted for any of this Starmer - put it to a vote of the population

@LewisColeathlete
@

What are they gonna do next, ban us from breathing?

@wGalaxii
@

Its dont protect them

@KavindayaGunasekara
@

Then change the voting age to 21 instead of 18 because if they want a 15 year old to watch toddler shows then how they will have the Maturity to vote the right candidate when they turn 18 ?

Ban over 50's from social media so that they can provide entertainment & protection for the children now going outside more often instead of staying inside at home.

@Vinny-Zen
@

it s parents who let the kids have phones - it is not up to governments to keep sticking their noses into peoples lives - give your freedom away and you will never get it back - it's never about kids, it's about a creeping control and power grab - take control of your own family life and tell the govermnment to d off..........

Also, he is using the excuse to promote welfare. It is sad the parents lost their children but their cases is not what all the parents are going thru. T is sad that they are used to promote an agenda of the prime minister to promote himself and his welfare if you listened what he said. It is the responsibility of parents to watch for their children. There are parents that are controlled by their children and they give to their children whatever they want, they worship them. . They allow temper tantrums, they create narcissists and adult entitled brats. Saying that banning media will bring families together and they will be happily ever after is not realistic. Some parents need parenting classes and stop being lazy when raising children. Again, very sad these parents lost their children but not all parents have the same experience when they raise their children and some know how to do it and some don’t know and some need help.

@billydewey
@

It is not the fault of social media alone, the parents should put the limits on how their children use the media. It is always easy to blame for something else but some parties use media as nannies , not all parents are the same and not all of them have the best interest and are immature.

@billydewey

Starmer is a complete and utter LIAR! He doesn’t give a crap and just using these people as pawns for his SICK desires for control!

My children are home schooled there are no internet and devices in the family home. My children are forbidden to own smartphones and computers while living in the family home.

59:15 I’m just astonished that adults are literally saying that the government needs to step in so that their children will go to sleep.

Yes, social media definitely has problems, but if you allow your child to have an Internet enabled device in their bedroom, that is your fault and your fault alone. It’s dead simple

“It’s 9pm [or whatever is age appropriate] and time for you to go to bed. You can read for 30 minutes, but please switch off your phone and leave it in the kitchen
 if I catch you using your phone after 9pm, I will confiscate it for 1 week. If I catch you doing it again, then I will sell your smartphone and give you a basic feature phone so you can make calls and SMS only”.

If your child is 17 and living at home, then you are responsible for them and for their behaviour.

Parents’ inability to implement simple rules and discipline their children, has resulted in inconvenience for me, additional cost, and erosion of my privacy.

I will soon be in a position whereby I will have to break the law so I can carry out otherwise legal activities in private. I don’t do anything illegal on the Internet, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to allow the government to monitor, interfere or otherwise have anything to do my private, legal activities.

@Innesb
@

Um..... HELLO !!???? Why would you delude parents into thinking this will change anything. You have the internet yes ? A simple search will teach you all that It didn't work here. No Adults had to do anything and the kids just put filters on or drew moustashes on.... lol. Then they all taught each other what a VPN was. Don't panic. But, yeah, it hasn't worked at all in Australia. In fact with all the kids getting VPN's it's worse. Parent up and actively monitor your kids usage. Do not leave it up to the government.

@AuntieNick
@

49:00 It was “very high level” because they haven’t got a clue what they’re doing. The same measures have failed in Australia, where 70% of children can still easily access social media (and they’re the ones we know about).

The UK government doesn’t have a magic wand - they don’t have access to different technologies.

Adults will be required to register for VPN usage next (it’s already been voted through the House of Lords) and all Internet privacy will eventually be removed.

Do you remember being shocked (or perhaps laughing) when you first heard about the “great firewall of China”? This is exactly what the UK government is working towards. One step at a time, your freedom and privacy are being eroded.

Sure, you have nothing to hide, but your behaviours are slowly being modified without you realising it.

I was literally waiting for Starmer to say "England prevails".

I have been followed by 4 cam girls on twitter in the last week
...they just suddenly came out of the woodwork [and there hadn't been activity like that for maybe 7 months], I have a few issues with in-your-face sexuality (and) some would call me a prude BUT treating a social media platform like a red light district is wrong and if they're coming for me - a NeuroDiverse some would say vulnrabL young adult who's uncomfortably close to 35 - they're coming for your children
your ever precious children. You did this, society so go on and applaud yourselves, you turned Facebook into a noticeboard where someone's racist aunt can just post a minions meme that crosses a line, you have let a mentally unstable ...hang on he's the only one so ...you've let thee _ thee _ mentally unstable trillionaire turn Twitter into a bin fire of Trans hatred and somewhere where the Tommy Mobinsane never gets told to sit down on even an appropriate naughty step so yes bang on about enforced face surrendering until the cows come home this needs to happen I sometimes like to think I'm living proof that the internet messes you up and I'm not even ready to tell you exactly what I've seen and where. But this stuff needs to happen.
Thank you if you've read all of this, not every1 listens to people like me.

@ThatCoalSoul

15:40 Regardless of anything else you may think about social media, if your child is not going to bed at a decent hour (and going to sleep), that is the parent’s fault.

The parent should be taking the phone from the child at bedtime. When I was a child, I would sometimes stay awake reading a book with a torch, and my parents would take the the torch from me and there would be a consequence for not following the bedtime rules!

If your child is using social media instead of doing their homework, then that is also your fault.

It’s not difficult folks. If you can’t say “No” to your child then you are the problem. Not your child, not the government, not the social media companies - it’s you! You are the problem!

@Innesb
@

I’m genuinely sorry to advise that this legislation will have almost no effect in the context that these parents expect it to have. They have experienced appalling tragedy, but this legislation is not a ‘magic switch’ - it will change almost nothing in the context of child safety on the internet.

@Innesb

Run children's net use through their parents net.
And force parents to take responsibility.

There are people outside who class this as fate. It was their time to die as simple as that. There time on this planet earth was up. These people who killed them were born to kill them. Like the person who kills them was born to kill them. We are all going to die at someone's hands or our own hands. No-one lives forever. I think it's harder for a parent or parents who only have one child that dies before they do.m when they were spost to have the whole life ahead of them.
