fun fact: palm trees are not at all native to california! they're a tropical grass (yes, GRASS). most if not all of the palm trees in southern california were imported from egypt when they were first building up hollywood. it's especially unfortunate because it's part of why our summers are so hot - oak trees are a keystone species in southern california and provide lots of natural shade, but we got rid of a lot of them in favor of palm trees :(
