Mountain Driving 101: Inspecting brakes before heading downhill (Episode 2)

Video Overview & Insights

When driving across the prairies or the plains, you’d probably never notice if a brake or two were out of adjustment, but you can’t take brakes for granted when driving in mountains. That’s why you’ll often find brake check areas at the top of steep mountain grades. This video explains how to conduct a quick walkaround inspection to ensure the brakes are in proper adjustment and functioning properly before beginning the descent.

Ok but my question is Why are trucks in North America still using drum brakes?

I drive a lot of mountain grades , there is a brake check before Hope BC ZIPKIOS Brake Check going west bound on the Koke , hwy 5 , It has a lot of snow in the winter , going down that part of the highway I use my engine compressor and low gear my brakes do not get applied until my rpm’s start going close to 2100 , then I give my truck a good brake application, a good one just one not pumping and using up my reserve air but enough brake power to shove in one higher gear as my truck picks up speed , I now am in a higher gear but getting close to the bottom of the mountain hill , as my truck is being slowed by compression and my gear selection I have made it to the bottom and now my brakes are cool and can use them to slow even more , but the weight of my load is normally not too heavy I usually go to BC with 20,000 pounds , when my load is 43,000 pounds I have to operate my unit not the same as a 20,000 pound load I start off in 7 th gear from the Zipkos brake check and use small brake applications but keep in mind I need to have a small window of cooling period so I don’t get brake fade . I have no idea how to do this with an automatic transmission, you would think I drove for over 20 years and would know how to drive and automatic ? I can tell you the truth who ever started making automatic semi trucks never took 80,000 pounds down that part of the Koke hwy 5 in BC , if anyone can tell me how they operate an automatic semi heavy , I like to hear how you do such maneuvers ? Thank you kindly keep your wheels clean and spinning .

If only companies have you time so do stuff like this. Instead it’s like, hey driver this loads gonna barely make it. So don’t stop for coffee or to even pee.

There's a convenient button called pre-trip external lights assistance.

Once I had a caliper fail on a truck I was driving, not my truck tho. Did not release all the way and heated the disc red hot. Did catch it in time so no fire.
We don't have brake checks areas, not runaway ramps or anything like that. Not really an issue really with brakes failing.
