Mandukya upanishad describes OM in only 12 verses.
A deep study of this upanishad with associated commentaries will help a seeker move closer to divinity.
Shri Rama tells Hanuman (in Muktika upanishad) that if read and understood correctly , Mandukya upanishad is itself capable of granting the highest form of liberation (Kaivalya)
The upanishad alongwith its commentaries is freely available online.
Om should start from the centre of the navel. ‘A’ should come from there, ‘U’ should come from the throat and ‘M’ should be in your head. In this process, All the three syllables should be chanted with equal time.
It should sound as OM and not as AUM separately.
After the chanting session, the chanter should self analyse the experience and see if it energises them.
One can listen to OM in the backgound even when busy in other activities as it gives several health benefits.
As per the ancient scriptures known as Upanishads there are 4 states of consciousness.
These are Jagrut or waking which corresponds to the A of Aum
Next is Swapna or dream state which corresponds to U of Aum
Next is Sushupti or deep sleep state which corresponds to M of Aum
And beyond this is the fourth, Turiya or super consciousness which corresponds to the silence after M
OM thus signifies that the One consciousness is present in all 4 states , only the experience varies in each state
When OM is chanted with a deep contemplation on this meaning of continuity of consciousness across all states , a person can get liberated while mere chanting without contemplation will give lesser benefits like peace of mind, energy cleansing etc.
We can chant it 21 times or 108 times.

Earlier I was chanting Gayatri mantra randomly without checking the facing direction.
One day in a dream I saw a person standing opposite to the direction of Sun and chanting (Sun rays were falling on his back)
Since then I am following directions as well.
Basically we have to face east in morning and noon and west in evening and ideally should also view the Sun light outside.
=> The Earth is a huge Bar Magnet and through magnetoreception we experience different energies when facing different directions
=> As per current neuroscience research exposure to morning sunlight increases our cortisol levels , leading to better metabolism , immune function and ability to focus. It also helps regulate the circadian clock ,our bodies internal clock, that helps regulate all bodily processes.
Facing west in the evening and viewing the evening sunset may signal to the brain that the body needs to be brought into the state of relaxation (Research is ongoing on this).
