Mastering A Song - Start To Finish!

Video Overview & Insights

Take a peak behind the curtain at what is involved in mastering a song!

Hey Legends! If you enjoyed this video and want to support the channel, consider following the link in the description above and grabbing a copy of one of my sample packs! Thanks guys!

In this video I'll run you through the processing I used to master a pop song using only plugins to achieve a loud, clear and punchy master.

While every master is treated differently, this should give you a few ideas on how to approach mastering a song.

Do you use clipper or not?

(00:00) Introduction

(03:22) Processing

That whistle sound is driving me crazy. Not sure what instrument that is but it’s like wind is blowing through a tunnel. It’s really strong and I can’t help but obsess over it. Whatever instrument or instruments are causing this need to be turned way down or off. Yuck.

For a beginner like me, Remasterify is literally GODSENT. I do not need to go through the mastering complexitiy as I mainly focus on creativityy and perfectinng my initial mix, then i run it through remasterify.

Are you sure you had the audio playing the original version vs the mastered version there all the way? Coz most of the bypassed/ not bypassed sounded identical except for the very end where you pumped the vol into it.

I have a fun challenge for you. Mix and master an entire song on a Tascam 2488neo 24-track digital recorder. Please please please

I honestly can't hear any difference between processed and bypassed. I feel like I'm listening to the emperors new clothes.

As someone who still buys CD, I can tell 100% NOTHING is mastered nowhere near -14LUFS. Even in 2025 I hear people on my close circle echoing this to this day and still important to raise awareness to the subject. -10 to -5 that's what's up.

Watched the whole video and everything you did is very solid but I'm a bit confused why only .5 gain reduction on your clipper. Especially if your clipper has oversampling---which most good clippers have---you can get up to 3db gain reduction before you even have to start worrying about unwanted distortion. And I realize tracks that don't have unruly transients wont need as much clipping but I find myself pushing my clippers a bit harder just because I can get away with it in the name of loudness without any downsides.

Q: when I download tracks from artists and import them to my DAW, their soundwaves look almost even all throughout the song that they almost look like a hotdog, but when I try to mix and master my own song, the soundwaves look thin on some parts and fat on the other. How can achieve that? Thanks for your videos brother, they taught me how to start mixing on my own!

@jrdign
@

That’s a lot of plug ins. Bernie only had like 3 hardware and that was it.

Snare punch gone in -7 one

Do you really master on those Yamaha’s ?

How much to master 1 song?

@mikesparks3398

Does the pro l2 not have a threshold setting? There appears to be a tool bar on the right hand side I can't really see too well.

@TopOfTheMound

But my question is what will Spotify do to a track that comes in at -7 lufs?

@WassupFred
@

Hey Rhys, when you give a mastering engineer stems do you supply them panned? I assume the answer’s yes but wanted to check. Thanks very much!

Great video! Is the song released yet?

I really appreciate your videos. Every time I look at videos about how to do vocals or mastering etc it's always pop and hip hop and stuff. I really needed to learn some things about rock vocals and mastering etc. So I just wanted to say thank you

Great. Only questionmark: hard clipping is more transparent for taming transients, and using no oversampling mean we are not adding back overshoots, so why not do that? If you had said you are wanting to add clipping harmonics on the whole track, soft clipping with oversampling would make more sense to me.

Thanks for these videos man helped me so much while producing my EP

Great video - one of the best I've seen on mastering as far as giving clear advice and not getting too technical - you make it feel like a relaxed and simple process, and you show that each move you make is small, but with purpose.

@musiclover-r9m
@

You don't need all the cutaways.

@mainsailsound983
@

Why not fix this already in the mix? Like what is the point of mastering except pushing the sound up and maybe add a bit of saturation to the whole mix?
Also what type of saturation is best for mastering, tape types?

@LordOfSweden
@

Dude you are far and away my favorite mix instructor on YouTube. There's so much crap advice out there but you consistently release golden video after golden video.

I'm curious as to why you don't use Ozone to make the track louder? Also, I'm wondering what you think of assistant mode? How close does it get to a solid master? I'm using Ozone 10 and I find it totally wrecks my mix, in 10 specifically they added a bunch of extra crap that I can't figure out how to use but right out of assistant it just messes with the sound so so much. Do you use Neutron at all? If you could maybe roast mix assistant I think that'd make for great content haha

Thank you so much!! Just wondering what you think of Smart Limit by Sonibe, just got it over the pro L2, would you say the pro L2 is a coloured or clean limiter. The Sonible sounds clean

The key to being a mixing master is to have the whole band watching you as you confidently say "And I'm gonna make a cut at the 20hz range...you guys hear that?" 😅 Jokes aside good vid, you're a talented musician and make a lot of this stuff simple.
