As a Mainz residential I think you shpuld have spent way more time on the Rhine riverside!
It‘s my favorite spot in the whole region and you can walk 1 1/2 hours along the river without crossing a single street, and you see the Taunus Montains in the north.
Also on the Kastel sode of the river there‘s Meeting of Styles, a really influential Graffiti Festival/Exhibition.

I am from Mainz. Youz missed the Isis-Temple in the basement of the Römerpassage. while building the Parking basement for the Römerpassage, they found curses, scratched on lead foil and wrapped around chicken bones. and an old romain "Voodoo-Puppet" made of clay.

Mainz, Germany is one of the country's most underrated destinations, offering a fascinating mix of history, culture, architecture, food, and wine. As we explore the city, we also spend plenty of time sampling local food, traditional German dishes, regional wines, and some of the best Mainz Germany restaurants. If you enjoy authentic travel experiences, you're going to love this city.
As a fellow local, I'd recommend to visit the Deutschhaus next time, the seat of the Rhineland-Palatinate Parliament. The Mainz Republic was the first democratic state on what is now German territory, founded in 1793. Knowing this may help you understand the meaning of the sculpture on Domplatz. The Deutschhaus served as the seat of parliament in 1793 and continues to do so today. Next to it, you can visit the Kurfürstliches Schloss, enjoy the beer garden, and take a walk along the Rhine. Feel free to let me know if you'd like some more local recommendations.
What makes our perspective unique is that we've lived and worked in Germany for more than 30 years and retired here four years ago. We've spent decades exploring Germany's cities, small towns, Christmas markets, castles, and hidden gems, giving us firsthand knowledge of what makes each destination special. We don't just visit Germany—we call it home.
Whether you're planning your first trip to Germany or looking for lesser-known destinations beyond Munich and Berlin, Mainz deserves a spot on your itinerary.
Todays Mainzer Dom is the second Dom. Another Dom was built earlier. Its ruins have eben discovered just a few years ago where today the church St. Johannis Evangelist is.

@kupaadopThanks for the video! I learned something new. Some cute little towns alonh the Lahn River. Marburg, Wetzlar, Weilburg, Runkel and to some extent, the city of Diez. Not at the Lahnriver, but nearby Wetzlar is Braunfels. Todays castle was builded in the 19th centuy. In Texas is a city called New Brownfels. Have you been to Monschau and Aachen? You could explore many many more lite german towns in all of germany.
@aka99Gude, Friends!
@Nik420_MzGreetings from Mainz!
@nein9.9Grüße aus Mainz und vielen Dank für den spannenden Bericht aus meiner Heimatstadt aus der Perspektive des Besuchers!
@UrsKinzelbachTempbetter coverage of mainz than all that the Mainer cultural departments ever put out. live here already 20 years. its awesome.
@adrianhochmann309113:43 Yes, you are right about tasting Alcohol in the "Contreau Truffle" Cake.
It is actually Cointreau in it, a french liquor, you can find in most German Supermarkets. 😊
glad you liked your stay in the city where I live!
It seems you were not really in danger of loosing too much weight during your visit to Mainz ;)
The first Mainz Cathedral was built of wood, but it burned down and was then rebuilt in stone in 975, retaining the same size.
It is not entirely clear exactly when the first cathedral in Mainz was built. It is even believed that the first cathedral was constructed during the Roman occupation. The Romans were in Mainz until the 5th century. The oldest cathedral in Germany is located in Trier; it was built around 340 AD during the Roman era.
I have to say... its weird suddenly finding my hometown on youtube 😂 but in a good way.
@C0d3B14ckSpundekäs may look like Obatzter but it isn't at all. But Obatzter (beeing as Yummy as well) is made of Camembert, Spundekäs is made of Quark, Creamcheese, butter, salt, blackpepper powder, sweetpaprika powder (may be differing from winte tavern to wine tavern).
@joachimdorr6060I lived in Mainz für several years in the 1980s. First in the Kaiserstrasse, later in the Rheinallee. I well remember walking my daughter to school over the 'grüne Brücke'.... I taught English at the VHS, and my ex-husband ran a small pub right near St. Stephan's.
@trinaroach2832Great Video - thank you very much - I live in Mainz since 2001🤩😍
@flightnortonWow what a nice Video about my Hometown🤩
@tilli1979U missed the Schweinshaxe at Eisgrub ! Not the best I've ever had but very iconic and still great. A must order if you never had one.
@patrickrehn1643Nice. Gude aus Mainz
@generaldidiA wonderful tour description of my hometown, Mainz. It was in clear English, and I understood most of it. 😊 Many thanks for that. I’m going to subscribe to your channel and keep following it. You do a great job—detailed, well-researched, and with wonderful visuals. Thanks again. 👍
@i.w.b.125Next... Wiesbaden or Trier? 😊
@gridvidHallo,bin ein mainzer. Haben euch die doofen Baustellen nicht abgeschreckt?
@derlegoversteherundprofi493I lived in Main from 1999 till 2003. Beautiful City. I should have stayed there.
@stefans.6858Thank you, learnt some new things about my home town. You could mention the Roman Isis temple that has been found during construction works and conserved in the basement of the Römerpassage Mall 5 walking minutes west of the cathedral.
@DirkMetallBorn a Meenzer, but living in Hessia today the most obvious thing for me is that Apfelwein (Apple wine) isn’t really a thing there, regardless that you will get it at the other side of the (Rhine) river. So the historical Mainzer stable is "Weck, Worscht un(d) Woi" (a bun, sausage and wine)
@agn855Spundekäs is a cream cheese-based recipe, whereas the flavors of Camembert and caraway stand out more in Obazda; the typical mixing ratio is two parts Camembert to one part cream cheese.
@Sabine-g7h🇩🇪🇺🇲❤
@hansfranz-h7yThe Romans called Mainz Moguntiacum and the French call it Mayence…
@AttirbfulThanks for this great video. You are right, Mainz, as a catholic city, has not only an ancient cathedrial but also an outstanding cuisine and delicious vines. I am looking forard to upcoming videos. By the way, we have a catholic brotherhood of Saint Alban in our parish. Best greetings from Bavaria!

@rianair5899Wonderful video, folks!! I haven't been to Mainz since 1989, and after watching this video, I am really ready to revisit. I have driven past Mainz since 1989, but now I will be intentional about going back. Thanks for the tip on the visitor's card. The food and all of the desserts looked amazing. Thank you for sharing this masterpiece. :)
@MagnificentGermanywithDarionGreat job! And that is said from a „Meenzer“… you covered the basics really well, but you didn’t get to see a lot of the secrets… Eisenturm, Römertor, Drusus Turm, Davitius-Victor-Bogen, Jupiter-Säule, Roman Aquaduct, Zitadelle, Steinernes Haus, Isis-Magna Mater Temple, and more… next time you come to Mainz, let me know and I‘d be happy to give you a „tour from a local“ :)
@culinarygood7637The 'Slo-mo' during your previous Kaffee und Kuchen time underscored just how delicious it was!!!😂
@jjns5600I was stationed in Mainz from 1988-1990 when I was in the U.S. Army. After many trips to Germany it is still my favorite town in Germany. I went there three days ago on a whim just to go to the Dom.
@JamesSkinner-wu2ztIn think Gutenberg got his idea to press (print) books from the wine pressing. And that he used a wine press for his first attempts. In Strasbourg though!
@botalm1878Fleischwurst is pork, not beef.
@ReinholdOtto27:40 Do you know the Mainzelmännchen? ❤
