Lalo Salamanca's First Appearance | Coushatta | Better Call Saul

Video Overview & Insights

Nacho returns to the restaurant to find Eduardo 'Lalo' Salamanca cooking in the kitchen. His surprising appearance worries Nacho.

Lalo is my 2nd favorite character in the BB universe… Walt being 1st.

New episodes of LUCKY HANK premiere Sundays at 9pm on AMC, catch up any time on AMC+.

Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

Lalo is a textbook case of a sociopath. He loves to throw his weight around, to dominate everyone around him, but he does it in subtle ways that are not immediately obvious. Everything he does in this first scene is calculated to assert dominance: walking into your place of business, brazenly cooking food there and offering you some as if he owned the place (which is the message), smiling and acting all cordial while knowing you have no choice but to play along, heck even the overly loud music just to annoy people, as if daring someone to say something. Note how Domingo is sitting there all unsure and afraid. This is a pattern with Lalo throughout the series, he likes to make people uncomfortable while acting super chill himself, as if to demonstrate the gulf between their respective emotional states. Like when he ignores Jimmy and keeps wrenching on his car for several minutes, or how he taps the fishtank glass at Jimmy & Kim's place, or how he treats his serving staff at his mansion. Always the big smile and overwhelming presence, he's basically making a show of force anytime he can get away with it, for no reason other than his own amusement and to reassure everyone present that he's the top dog.

It's as if Cesare Borgia from Assassin's Creed were an actually likeable character. The writers must all be alchemists.

The song is so iconic, I don't even understand what it means but it brings a lot of "aura" to the character

Im convinced that if Lalo showed up in Breaking Bad instead of BCS Walter and Jesse would’ve been dead in the within 3 episodes.

“Don’t worry, it’s gonna be like I’m not even here”. Literally the biggest lie in the BB / BCS universe

Should have made a spinoff series with Lalo, instead of making a new show with the lawyer actress.

What makes this show amazing as well aside from all the 100000000 factors that go in this but you can tell the character genuinely doesnt want to do some things to other ppl especially their friends or someone they mightve come close to even if its a little

@cloudf772

The music cranked full blast just feels right for the character that has yet to be reviled after beating the last two

I have written about a character - an “archetype”, if you will - in speculative fiction. The generic name for this leader-of-a-settlement is “El Jefe.”

Upon seeing Eduardo, here - I’ve not watched the series - I thought, “It’s him. That’s El Jefe, right there.”

It's hard to explain, but I'm natively from Missouri. I was doing some work a few years ago in Las Cruces and something about New Mexico looks different but it's exactly what this show is showing. That yellowish hue.

He's charming, yet something about him is unsettling in this scene. At first glance, you'd know he's not the kind you cross. Watching him danced and sang cheerfully, like seeing the devil. I love BrBa's Universe.
