Once I spent all but $500 of my savings to pay off my land and truck. I was thinking I could rebuild my savings quickly. A week after the money was gone I needed $2,500 for truck repairs. I spent that $500 renting a car while I saved up to get my truck fixed. Didn't buy anything but gas for a week, then I made four payments to the shop. That was a scary time.

Jade, NO home inspection includes the pipes going to the road. That was not the fault of the "inspector," if, indeed, there actually was a home inspection. He likely got only a VA Appraisal which is not a home inspection.

Jenny in Cincinnati, OH - sounds like the boyfriend/fiance did not know the difference between an inspector (who "missed a bunch of stuff") and a VA Appraiser. My guess is that the boyfriend got a VA Appraiser and skipped a home inspector. VA loans do not use "inspectors"โ€”they use VA appraisers who ensure homes meet Minimum Property Requirements (MPRs) focusing on safety, sanitation, and structural soundness. They are strict about dealbreakers like peeling paint, roof leaks, and termites. Veterans are still highly encouraged to hire an independent home inspector. A VA Appraisal is required to secure the loan and determine market value. It is not a deep-dive inspection. The appraiser checks basic habitability (e.g., working HVAC, no exposed wires, solid roof, and no chipping paint). If an MPR is violated, the seller must fix it before the deal closes. Anyone who is getting a VA loan is also advised to get a separate thorough home inspection. NEITHER will check the underground pipes. Jade should not be advising her to tell him to make a claim against the "inspector," or saying the inspector should have checked the pipes when she doesn't know if he got an actual inspection or not.

Kris - call with the student loans in forbearance. DO NOT PAY OFF THE STUDENT LOANS WITHOUT READING THIS COMMENT BECAUSE THERE IS AN IMPACT ON HOW YOU DO IT. If you have not been paying due to the Covid pause, you are way overdue and the loans are likely now moved from forbearance to default and reported to the credit bureaus and on your credit report. The pause ended in 2023, loan holders were notified, and as of Jan 1 this year, there are limited choices of what to do with back student loan debt in default. 1) You can pay off the loans, but the debt will stay on your credit report and affect your credit score for 7 years, even paid. 2) You can go into "rehabilitation" and make scheduled on time payments at an amount that is decided for your situation for 10 months to prove you can now make regular payments. At that point you CAN pay it off in its entirety. If you make it through rehabilitation successfully, the default will NOT remain on your credit report. The second choice is your only option right now if you want the paid debt off your credit report which will have an impact on your credit score. (However, the late payments that occurred before the default will remain on your file for up to seven years.) The RS people may give different advice b/c they discount credit scores and credit reports.

Ramsey Solutions Privacy Policy

The difference in Dave and his protรฉgรฉs is that the man who called with 5 kids and 40k in savings and 1k free a month who simply wanted to get a 30 year mortgage instead of 15 was mishandled. He valued over wealth the concern of missed time with his kids. It sound like they became so frugal that there are no fishing trips, 4 wheelers, concerts or movies. Dave's protรฉgรฉs while usually keen, just slapped him with the company lines like a doctor's office, "NEXTTT". Hope he gets a 30 year and make beautiful memories with his kids.

What do you do when the funds you have tried to set aside for car or house repairs get used for those things? then you start out again at $0? Then have something else crop up before you have more funds built up? We keep having this happen. We have some things we are trying to save for, we get up to maybe $500, then a catastrophe hits in another area, so we rob that fund to cover it, (to avoid debt) but then the thing never gets addressed... Sigh.

Jenny to be honest you should focus on yourself and your fiance does not sound like a smart man and i would not marry him at all. Why buy a 100 year old home which should be demolished or used for artifacts only ? and the guy probaly has never seen any of the stuff in the house because nobody was born at that time to know any of the structure used back then so you have no claim.

Bill's call - YES! Young families can use the money now when they're raising their families, not when their kids are grown. Personally, what we do is give for very designated reasons - help with education, kids' activities, and cash gifts by Zelle to go to dinner to celebrate when we can't be there (we live in another state) or when we want to make a contribution for specific things like back to school shopping or a school or missions trip. We have also had family vacations that we have paid for. We do not make contributions for regular bills and living expenses. They also know they have to be responsible and make good financial decisions - they are not returning home to their childhood bedrooms.

Caleb, they are never going to vary from the order of their steps. You can still make up your own mind based on your circumstances! It's amazing to me that "stork mode" is permitted for folks to stack up cash and stop paying off debt, but other situations don't get the same consideration. FOLLOW YOUR GUT. You know your situation - they don't. The steps are one method, but they are not holy Scripture.

@Carpediemx365

Eduardo rewards himself with a truck because he couldn't get a job? That's rich. No wonder he's in such a mess. One of the craziest calls on here today. He has both a wife and a fiancee? Jumping from one job to another. Wifey has a $35,000 car - seems like she should get a job to pay for that, even if it's cleaning houses or something she can do when hubs is home.

@Carpediemx365

Paying off credit cards does not need to be accompanied by closing the accounts. Pay off your debts, cut up cards, but do NOT close accounts until everything is paid up and then close them slowly one by one if you want that "indeterminable" credit score they are always promoting. But be prepared that with an indeterminable credit score, certain bills WILL go up and some parts of life will become more difficult without an actual high credit score. Jade says a zero credit score is as good as a high credit score. I hope no one believes that because it just is NOT true in today's world. Your credit score does NOT drop as you pay off your credit cards - your score RISES because your utilization falls. RS people - give advice and say why you adopt certain positions. But stop bolstering your positions with statements that are not true.

Harold's call makes no sense unless I totally did not understand what he just said. He says he has "nothing saved," but has $663,000 in a 401K at Costco where he continues to work bc of the benefits. What kind of benefits does he need at 71 when he can get Medicare and a good supplement for not that much money each month. If Harold's home is paid for and he has no debt, then he should be able to pay his regular bills with $3500 Social Security and he's still working enough to double that. Many Senior citizens would be thrilled to still have a monthly income of $7,000. WHY does he think he needs so much more than what he has? He already enjoyed all that travel while he was healthy enough to do so. He's not suffering financially - he needs meaning in life. VOLUNTEER! People need you!

Hi from downtown Montreal! I will be 71 in a month. On step 2. The debt will be gone end of October. Then just do step 3 which will take 3 months. Then start step 4 & also stack cash. No step 5 or 6 for me. I have been retired for over 10 years. Started the Ramsey plan 10 months ago. Living well below my means. My wonderful life came late in life to me, but it is still more than worth it! Good luck to you all! God bless us!
