Video Overview & Insights
Spotlight is a series which highlights cast, crew, and creators of various kaiju-related properties.
Monsters are tragic beings. They are born too tall, too strong, too heavy. They are not evil by choice. That is their tragedy. They do not attack people because they want to, but because of their size and strength, mankind has no other choice but to defend himself. After several stories such as this, people end up having a kind of affection for the monsters. They end up caring about them.
- Ishiro Honda
In this episode, we look at the most prolific director of Toho's science fiction films, Ishiro Honda!

If I could meet Ishiro Honda, I tell him not to feel bad about Godzilla going from a symbol of nuclear destruction to a defender of Japan. It speaks volumes of about Godzilla ability to be flexible and to represent different themes and interpretations on what story wants him to be or what Japan needs him to be. The Godzilla franchise could not survive with Godzilla only remaining as a villain, and his evolving to be a force, nature, and hero helped spread Godzilla to a wide audience. Godzilla character can represent anything and that buaty of him.

Ishiro Honda experienced the horrifying destruction of nuclear weaponry. This shaped his imagination to create the archetype of all kaijus known as Godzilla.
