I spent a week inside the hardest place for a woman to be beautiful. Seoul, South Korea is the cosmetic surgery and beauty industry capital of the world. I meet three women trying to navigate it.

my brother's boyfriend was recruited to be in a kpop band. at 15, the amount of permanent cosmetic procedures they wanted to contractually obligate him to was insane. ultimately his parents didn't let him go through with it, but the culture is wild. we're talking skin lightening and jaw widening at 15.

I remember my ex-gf always telling me not to make those forehead wrinkles when you raise your eyebrows. It was so annoying and I just told her she can find someone else who doesn't raise their eyebrows or smiles a lot, and she wouldn't have to worry about forehead wrinkles, or eye wrinkles being formed. She expected me to be plastic, no facial expressions, I had enough of her telling me, "Don't raise your eyebrows, don't smile for a long time, don't do this, don't do that... you will have wrinkles you're only 26" and guess where she was from... Yup, S. Korea. We lasted 9 months, I don't think I can date a Korean again after that experience.

Not that smartâŠthey are fake full of bits and pieces not natural and all look lame and the same, no character. I tried watching a Chinese and Korean drama lately and itâs frustrating because you canât distinguish faces. I couldnât tell the main characters with others, very frustrating. I couldnât finish the movies.

I think the problem is they are being told and shown they are not pretty, cute, beautiful and they feel they are not accepted by the society. One of my korean friend also got eyelid surgery when she was 19-20 and felt that she is accepted by the community. It sounds so crazy for a person from another country. Beauty standarts in korea is really harsh on people thats why the styles, face of people after surgery are all same cause there is sadly no space to be different in korean society đą i wish it changes soon, and korean girls feel and know that they are beautiful as they are â€

@SanfranshelleyKorean people have just high standard for their beauty. Not envy to Western. Korean girl here. I havenât found ever who hate monolids themselves around me. And most Korean people are sensitive to deferences and strangeness, itâs more bigger than the Eurocentric beauty standard around whole Asia. Most results of blepharoplasty by Korean are closer to âbigger monolidsâ or hooded eyes called in Western. Never same to Caucasian eyelids. And they have a pride to their nation and culture very much, they use the word that âyou look Koreanâ as COMPLIMENT to foreigners. it means you are beautiful. I was born with wasian look(itâs not surprising things because we have many ancestors of nomads from central Asia,Balkan and Arabic merchants. Homogeneous nation doesnât mean inbreeding. This is peninsula itâs melting pot of diverse bloodlines) Most popular kids in my school when i was young they have hazel green~light brown eyed and dark blonde with big hooded eyes and soft face structure(it looks like Kpop idols wearing color contacts and bleaching hair) but i was opposite of them. I have double eyelids like Caucasian and zero epicanthal folds, protruding nasal bridge and my face skull is far from other normal East Asians. And boring brown eyes and hair. I have been mocked always for my appearance while growing up, nobody thought Iâm beautiful. I have never been fit to Korean beauty standard ever. Zero pretty privilege. Remember the wasian idols(Somi, Heuning siblings and Vernon etc) got many hate comments and mocking for their looks. Some foreigners guess me must have privilege and many loves in here. And some of them guess i might got cosmetic surgery to be looking White. Some White koreaboos expect the white privilege in Korea like other Asia countries and after visiting here they are so disappointing for icy Koreans who with full pride and confidence.
@ì êž°ë±ì„ìŽ-c3cOh my goodness, this one hit close to home. When I was younger, I was trapped in an eating disorder and body dysmorphia for 12 years. My recovery was hard won, and as much a credit to my doctors as it is to me. Even now, I have some body dysmorphic issues but Iâm getting there. The beauty standards being directed mostly at women isnât a bug, itâs a feature - if weâre exhausted due to self-hatred, weakened from starvation or distracted by body dysmorphia, it strips us of our voices and our ability to change the world for the better. Itâs all a form of misogynistic control.
Thank you for always being honest and warm in your videos, Josie. Theyâre very eye-opening and thought provoking, and you deserve every one of your followers. Also, your interviewee is right: youâre beautiful, exactly as you are. Please donât waste all the years I have in telling yourself youâre somehow not enough. Youâre enough, and you deserve to take up space in the world and raise your voice to be heard.

@mackarma2923I am korean and most of my friends or peers have had double eyelid surgery. In korea, they don't even think double eyelid surgery is considered plastic surgery because many ppl does it. If we include double eyelid surgery as plastic surgery, then yes. 50% is accurate i guess. I also feel a bit of peer pressure cuz lots of ppl say that it will make me look much prettier if I get double eyelid surgery.
I lived in singapore and am currently living in the US and tbh I feel much more confident about my look and less insecure.
+so overall youtube videos about Koreans' plastic surgery are somewhat exaggerated, but most of them are true... but I wish ppl from different countries do not judge all korean ppl did plastic surgery. I often feel very bad and unpleasent whenever I see comments that korean celebrities did plastic surgery or smth like that. But it is very rude thing to say so...

@hzzzzs3eHi josie, I cried at the last message from this video. Because I relate to it so much. How much we got pressure to look a certain way, act a certain way as a lady. I recently won 3rd for a hackathon competition. But the only thing I heard from my own dad is to ask me to go to a weight management clinic to drop some weights.. cause I will look prettier. No congrats .. just .. well. But there will always be people that are supportive, which I am thankful for. So stay loud and shine everyone. Just be yourself!

@missqiqilimI wish so bad that cosmetic surgery for issues with the way you look was against the law! Plastic surgery should be for repairing damage or cancer. Everyone is beautiful in their own way! I think Asian eyes are gorgeous so I donât understand wanting to change it! I wish we had more of a personal acceptance culture so people could learn to love themselves the way they are! There is nothing sexier then a person who is confident in who they are and what they look like!

@Jess-kj8jxMy family and the people around me when I was growing up made everything about my looks. I don't think that they meant to but they did. I had a full blown eating disorder by the time I was 11 years old. Looking back now I know that I wasn't overweight at all but at the time I was consumed with the thought that I was. I had this oversized sweatshirt that I would wear all of the time to try and hide in even in the hot summers. I really can't imagine what the girls and women in South Korea are going through. At least at the time anyway I wasn't being pressured to have any kind of plastic surgery as a teenager or in my early twenties. I know that has changed now with the baby Botox ridiculousness and alike but it's so much worse in South Korea. I just wish that we could get to place where we appreciate all different kinds of beauty as well as aging because aging really is a privilege but if you are a woman you feel like you can't age because if you do you'll disappear. Life is difficult enough without all of this pressure to be perfectly beautiful.

@lisak7380That's fantastic!!..that you like being able to be yourself and not cater to societal standards for female "beauty"...with that said...it is PERFECTLY ok for a woman to decide if she wants to look as certain way,,or follow a certain look or skin.care...i do not see anything wrong with a woman liking to look like the conventional woman accepted by societal standards....some women ENJOY dressing up, Wearing high heels, following a fashion trend...etc...why do women need to feel like they have to give those things up, in order to be "free" or considered to be accepted for who they are....some women like wearing a bra...some don't...to each their own, don't you think?
