The Village I live in is far smaller than any of those. Our population is around 700.

I would like to know where the employment is in these towns

Dunkirk was a very busy railroad town. Pennsylvania RR main line Chicago to Pittsburgh. Plus the Chesapeake and OHIO main Columbus to detroit.
I photographed trains there many years ago.
The PRR line is today running 1 or two trains a day. Nothing like the old days of 30-40-50 trains a day.

I’m from a town like this but the opposite trend is happening. The city is growing faster than it can handle and way livelier than it was on my childhood. It’s in a good location near Columbus which is why.

The rest of Ohio will only grow quieter and quieter as young people move to one of the 3 cities for jobs

You need to scope out if there are Little League parks in these towns. That's a marker of good things in a town.

You should go to Waldo Oh. And go in the G. R for a fried bologna sandwich. Absolutely wonderful.

Glad to see Forest Ohio. I used to bicycle between Columbus and Findlay on SR37. Forest was around mile 75, so we'd sometimes stop at the gas station. They have a really nice deli and grocery store type items. There used to be a furniture store where people from Findlay would shop. There's a restored train station. There's also a softserve ice cream place. All the towns along SR37 have their charm--Richwood, Larue, Marseilles, Forest and Mt Blanchard.

Funny story about Forest Ohio, In the early 1990’s I worked on an armored truck company and we were delivering change to the bank in Forest. The way I parked the truck that day the rear door of the truck was right over the sewer grate in front of the bank. My partner was unloading bags of coins and he lost his grip on a $1,000 bag of quarters and the cloth sack hit the sewer grate and broke open and $1,000 worth the quarters went down in that sewer! We called our boss and the company was self insured so they just replaced the bag for the bank and no attempt was made to retrieve all the quarters that fell in, so as far as anyone knows they’re probably still down there!😂

I never would've expected to see my hometown of Forest, Ohio or any of the other small towns around me on here. Pretty cool lol

I used to drive from Ada (Ohio Northern University) thru Dola, Dunkirk and Forest on my way to Route 30 on the other side of Upper Sandusky, (on my way to Wooster). I took the backroads so I could avoid all the traffic on Route 30 back when it was a 2 lane highway with lots of truck traffic. This was around 1973.

What do people do for their income. You never mention people's profession.

Nice.........I'm down US 30 a piece towards Van Wert. An even smaller village called Fort Jennings. We were founded in 1812. As a real estate appraiser I cover this area, have worked it since the early 2000's.

I grew up in Ada, about 10 minutes from Dunkirk. If you're ever back in the Hardin County area, I'd recommend checking out Ada, Alger, and McGuffey. McGuffey has a cool story with the onion pickers strike too!

The reason goods and services is higher in the Ohio rural towns is because there is not too much competition, there is very slim pickings for some services, most of them want cash in hand also. I know, i live outside a small village in Ohio.

Fair warning.. Avoid Paulding, Ohio like the plague.. It'll suck you in and ruin your life. Its the real life version of "Deliverance", "Children of the Corn" and "Wrong turn" all in one.... I'm originally from Columbus Ohio.. Its much better there.

Even though median income is relatively low, the towns and individual properties are nicely kept. Compare that to other areas covered in this series that look like war zones.

Every time i start one of these Videos I hope to see a pretty town/village. But they all look the same boring way. Seems it is a case of: Seen one = Seen them all. Why are US towns so ugly?
