How to Talk Like a Native Speaker | Marc Green | TEDxHeidelberg

Video Overview & Insights

Marc talked about the process of learning a foreign language and the different levels of fluency. He will show that there is a higher realm of language proficiency and explain what it takes to reach this “native” point where the benefits far surpass mere communication skills. Marc’s passion is the study of languages, their manifestation in local dialects, as well as their expression in poetry and folkloric song. He has acquired a near-native proficiency in six languages and their sub-forms and has given various musical performances. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

The irony is the entire time I couldn't ignore how weird his accent sounds. He sounds like an AI

As someone learning English for 8 years, this talk hits differently. The gap between understanding natives and sounding like one in writing is real. BeLikeNative finally closed that gap — a Chrome extension that paraphrases your text to match native patterns. Before, my writing was correct but obviously non-native. Now my colleagues can’t tell.

How you hate Russians. But it’s not due to the event you has described . It’s because of the call of your German relatives from 1941.

I really enjoyed listening to this talk, and I especially agreed with the importance of accent.

But I have to say, before speaker said that he his first (native) languages were German and English, I thought he had a slight accent in English, and thought that he had learned and mastered the language later on in life. 😄

I studied english in the Wizard course for 2 years, when i had 15 years old. But i didn't pratice every day, so my evolution was slowly. Today, almost fifteen years ago, i returned the studies, listening podcasts, watching videos, Reading books and using the Anki App to remember some expressions and prhases. Now, i can understend 90% of this video. I'm Brazilian Guy and the English is the First language that i'm learning. After i pretend to use the same methodis to learn spanish and anothers languages. Thanks, Ted and everybody!
