How to find new music in the age of algorithms
Video Overview & Insights
A guide on how to find new music in the age of algorithms. It takes some curation, but trust me it's worth it.

To be fair, I found great music through the YT algorithm.
More User Perspectives
I put on a bunch of different filters on discogs then organize by popularity then pick whatever is in the 75th percentile deep if there ends up being that many pages to begin with
but discogs doesn't have everything at all most of the time.
Bandcamp is pretty good but I haven't used it enough yet personally
YouTube is so good for me or at least used to and now the algorithm just shows stuff I already watched or stuff from my subscriptions rather than anything related to the video in question.
tl;dr active looking, active aversion to algorithm
@Love_LatviaI use the youtube mix playlist feature,works pretty good :>
@BETELGEUSE_M22this is the kind of criticism that helps the world grow, give options before criticizing, I personally don't buy into the whole thing AI and companies are evil and artist will starve, basically the same thing happened when record label like Motown were hit machines and then MTv, and dissipate both, great music came during that time, and at the same time experimental music was strong, so I see change ahead, but I think artist will still be around, how about adding some coding abilities to the music critic abilities and create an algorithm that will take into account taste and not profit. If future is as you describe it, I see tribes of coders who are also musicians feeding the AI the right commands to create beautiful music, and I see record label of coders who are musicians creating algorithm that will merge Chinese folk music with K-Pop and salsa that will spawn amazing records
@robertomunoz9745I found my current favorite artist by watching music reaction channels on YouTube. They often feature new and upcoming artists.
@joesmith-es1zyHonestly radio is still a good source for new music. Maybe not your average Coworker FM radio but I bet every country has at least one traditional and/or online radio station with good music selection. Speaking as a Polish person, Trójka is still an amazing choice despite being definitely less popular in recent years due to management dramas. They have both specialised music shows and variety shows with news and more mainstream but still very good music and to be honest the only offence they committed is playing Taylor Swift once. Radio Nowy Świat and Radio 357 are also great, having staff made up partially from ex-Trójka journalists and DJs. For UK as you said it's NTS and for the US I've heard so many good things about KEXP and their live sessions are definitely amazing. College/University radios are also worth checking out.
@oregano1246My favorite method even though it involves algorithms. 1. Start a playlist of songs that you currently like that are in a certain type of mood/feel that you want to find more of. 2. Allow yourself to either reach the end of the playlist and receive new recommendations or preview recommended songs to add and then start listening to them. 3. Add new songs that you like to this playlist and continue to do so until you have a catalog of new material which will keep evolving and expanding with your recent finds. Hope this helps
@ISERAMUSICthe thumbnail is a DJ Shadow Album: Endtroducing..... goat artist, heavily underappreciated
@GGh0sty101I like to find new bands by seeing shows of bands I like then deep diving into the openers . But I also am a big fan of Tiny Desk and KZXT shows
@legacy_the_archerFck why I'm here
@HaleBill-e9gwell you say never trust the algorithm, but I wanted to find this video again after watching it last year and I couldn't remember how it was called but still the algorithm delivered
@jannes3290Ayyyyyyy Cindy Leeeee
@dougie953We're all 48?
@occularpatdownYoy explained it very well, congratulations.
@shhnosenada5:53 Facts fugazi is really good
@Babpiwastakenя один тут русский? крутой видос бтв
@1012-callmeso you won't even list the background music from your video..? how ironic.
@stanloonaur69best artist i ever listened to was recommended to me by a very awesome friend
@haris6424proceeds to recommend pitchfork and fantano, what a fucking joke lmao
@cloud29555I just listen to bardcore, that way I can listen to old new music
@jamestdc7485Omg fugazi
@maj.lavaiiiee3395I got a really good recommendation for yall
Theres this very cool band called The Go! Team and they make music that sounds.... Idk how to describe but it just sounds very fun and upbeat without feeling overly positive
At 15:05 you say "video by discodelic" but searching for discodelic yields no relevant results. I'm curious to see that record dumpster dive video, what's the link?
@zomgawesomesaucesomething i noticed is that a lot of these sources do focus a lot on a lot of new music that comes out recently. So im still a little lost with finding older albums outside of like rym or smth. If anyone has any advice regarding that kinda thing thatd be great!
@ViviantheKittian-t3sThe algorithm is doing me fine. Loving the early 60s rnb and ska it’s throwing out
@ThedropinmagI hate algorithms with a burning passion, my main shortcut to youtube on firefox is linked to my subscriptions page, and when I used YT Music I felt like an ipad kid browsing through radio and playlists tabs trying to find the best pieces ASAP, I was disconnected from the very reason why we make music: appreciate it. I wasn't listening anymore, just sorting through boxes to check later. The results is that I can't remember 98℅ of the songs I came across that way. Now I just listen search for albums, mainly on discogs and bandcamp, and I listen it from start to finish in a calm way, not listening to finish and check that box off, but to appreciate one of the eldest arts of humankind. I love music, I can't live without it, and I absolute loathe with a burning passion what this profit focused society is doing to art.
@pgabrielrrGot some great inspiration for ambient and IDM albums from Oliver (Deep Cuts). He is so eloquent, love it.
@flatline1970One trick i use is to write random words and see what i can find. For example i digited "wild grass" and i found the single "Wild grasses", from the record "Dorothy", a beautiful British indie record by the Diagrams. Then I digged on this band's discography and I was positevely shocked by their work.
An other example: I was talking to a friend and suddenly we ended up talking about mushrooms and ways to cook them. I digited "funghi porcini" (we're Italians) on yt and i found a legendary myth of the trip-hop scene, Funki Porcini.
My main sources to find music I've never listened to are Nardwuar's interwiews, my Journal Analogue and Who Sampled.
Small edit: I forgot to mention concerts, festivals and legit clubs.
dont let these algorithms tell you what music is good and instead use these algorithms to make you feel like you have a say in what music you actually like
@purboyyThe other day I went onto bandcamp and they have a feature at the start page where they show what was most recently bought. I clicked one at random and ended up buying it (OMINESS, self-titled album) despite never having really listened to doom metal before. Isn’t that fun!
@hmmred7896This video has perfect timing for me! I’ve been telling my boyfriend I want to get into music more and he’s happens to be a huge music nerd. I want to find my own path of finding my own taste and not rely on him too much. I want a lot of peoples opinions because I think it’s fun to hear what people like and how they describe the music. So this is lovely, thank you 🤍
@SewageSquidI’m trying to find new music in these ways. I’ve always liked different music but I go into quietus and half of the reviewed albums are straight noise pollution. I just listened to the dreaming by Kate bush cover to cover and it was an incredible experience and I try to go find something new and it’s like finding a needle in a haystack. Kinda discouraging ngl
@CSChristCollectionsHonestly the way I do it sometimes too is my local record store make posts with new releases on instagram and just pick one from the pile or just all the different pics of vinyls being released.

Interesting topic however your background noise or microphone pops are very annoying - completely unlistenable.
@zyabberSmall weird radio stations can be a good one, be it student radio or stations that don't have hosts and only play music. Sometimes I like them not even to find new artists but just to break out of the bubble of what's constantly pushed at you
@CannicalCactiWas pleasently surprised for Adolf Nomura's Positive Yellow to be the BGM
@izumi53Find artist you like, listen to the artists whove appeared in their songs.
Thats how i discovered MF DOOM
Fantastic video!! very eye opening:))
@sarahvilhelmsen8768I found ZEEBiYA from a qr code I found on the side of the road. no regrets.
@kennyvisionsMy Spotify algorithm is goated, it only gives me super obscure bands with 150 monthly listeners that have the coolest sound, both modern and some 90s/2000s stuff. Rate your music only has like 5 ratings for some of my favorites now
@Luigi64I mean Spotify is actually doing a decent job of getting new music I like TBH
It's kinda weird but every week for a few years now there is at least a couple songs on the 30 it recs that I like.
