Video Overview & Insights

Hi guys, a simple application for Parkinson's Law in Programming

Im starting coding and as a artist and designer, I’ve applied this in my life and it makes me feel so alive.

Love you all. Thank you for 200K. I normally don't let numbers get to my head but 200K is crazy.

Music

Oh boy I’m not good at this one

This is exactly approach I was using. For example, I set myself the goal to write a program to determine whether any chunk of code is running in finite time, and finish within 2 hours, but here I am and watching bigboxSWE videos!

We need more hackatons.

Worst advice ever. Edit I forgot to add "Bhadwe"

What if you consistently don’t meet the deadline though

You get a sub for being genuine and cool, i'm trying to check out the most genuine youtubers right now

fireship 🤨

Remind yourself there's a high probability of not catching that exact amount on the real work, being mostly overpassing the limited time. But with experience and realism over sessions you become such a fast ilegal coder

Hey bigbox, is there a way or any group, discord so I can join community? I need a mentor like you, I would appreciate if you can share something

Great now i feel inspired to try and create my 3D renderer in 2 hours 🤦‍♂️, it really depends on size of what you are making, you could could end up spending 2 hours just figuring out the documentation for the required libraries, if it's small then 2 hours is a good rule to work with, a good rule of thumb for big features is a one day rule, you dedicate a day to either making significant progress or finishing a working feature, you could then take another day to finish or polish it up

I don't know what you feel about the deadline but I want to tell you that the first app I made took 2 years to complete in fact it was never completed.
Then, my second app ready to be deployed only took 2 months then until today I keep developing it and it has been 2 years ever since.

The first time is the most difficult time with any kind of experience such as coding, delivering the baby, love, broken heart, crime, lying, etc.
Afte the first time, it becomes easier. Easier doesn't mean easy, sometimes you have a new problem to solve. That's it.

Coding fast is easy, in an allotted amount of time; That has never been the issue.
What's hard and time expensive is the REPL abstractions, everything that codes does and verifying it.
That C program? Compile > crash > repeat.
That webapp? compounding minutes of load times just to verify what renders IF your lucky and don't get stuck yak shaving.
Current year version of this is LLM slop it can let anyone generate code in milliseconds that takes alot longer for someone else to test & fix.

This advice applies to life not just coding. Much appreciated 👍

Brilliant idea. Pressure yourself into coding like crap, then spend ten times longer debugging the code you vomited into your editor. Genius. You're manager material, for sure.

Instead of thinking "oh no, I only have one day to do this!" think instead "cool, by the end of the day this thing will be done"

3 seconds.
Damn it.

Well this is a good advice, me spending 10 hours or 3 days in a stupid back that is too obvious or why the perfectly working code does not work turns out i just commented a single line from x file . that is the reason why i decided to learn and study all over again and give myself time to search and prepare for a coding sesion

@KentKain

Still 720p on my end

0:35 This guy is Mikołaj Sos Sosowski Kamiński author of McPixel btw a great funny game. This clip was recorded by a Polish TV station during a hackathon so fit perfectly the topic of the video :)

If you're billing clients on how long the work will take - an accurate estimate then multiplied by 1-2 is a good rule of thumb.

My PM uses this trick too, at the end of each meeting she asks for updates about tasks assigned at the beginning or middle of the meeting.

Keep up videos man some people need this

@erengunduzvar

Yeah but this requires self-discipline in order to be able to abide by your own imposed deadlines. Without that or without motivation, this won't work either, which would be probably my case... But I'll give it a try hoping that it works

In my case there is no deadline, I am a solo dev and received a project, meant to be made in angular, which I did not knew, last Wednesday sat straight for 11 Hours, learned angular and made the project same day. 😂

Thank you Big Bock

@ir8293
@

its 15 minutes for me
if I didn't find a decent solution in 15 minutes I skip the task and go to the next one
I don't know how, but skipped tasks get processed in the background and I still finish them in the end

@denisblack9897
@

I fking love bigboxSWE. No intro, no bullshit

@thefanboy3285
@

why 720p?

@cguser
@

forget about the hourly payment things
this just assumes that a normal programmer could be as focus and producitve the same through out all the 2 hour blocks, which is simply not true and not realistic to implement.
