How I View the US After 13 Years Living in Europe
Video Overview & Insights
What's changed more? The USA? Or me?
I feel the same after moving from the US to the UK in 2018. My family does not understand why I won't move back. But since I moved away, I've been healthier; I used to be pre-diabetic but not had low blood sugar since shortly after moving. I also broke BOTH my ankles this year (bouldering) and had to stay in hospital and get surgery, which is the first time I've even used the NHS to that extent or stayed in a hospital at all. I'm so grateful that I didn't have to go into $20k of debt. Also, I got diagnosed with ADHD a few years ago and access affordable prescriptions. Not everything is perfect here but daily life's just a bit easier.

As an American it really depend on your financial situation for the quality of life here. If your in the upper middle class than America is fantastic but if your working class or the poor then it can feel hard to live here.
Thank you so much for watching! Hope you enjoyed it!
Video Chapters
This is the best video on Europe that I’ve seen to date. Well done. I used to live there in 2017/2018. I’ve since moved back to Canada, which is nowhere near as bad as the US, but I’m heavily considering going back lol. This was a huge push in that direction!
0:00 Hook & Intro
1:01 Why I Don't Miss Guns
4:34 US Style Government vs European Style
7:07 Walkability and Public Transport
The best thing I can say about living in the states for a year, is that it taught me to appreciate being British. Our little island is far from a utopia, but you don’t miss your water till your well runs dry
9:21 Food Quality and Price
10:36 Healthcare in the US vs Europe
As an almost 20 year old who doesn’t like the way our government functions and can acknowledge that democracy is flawed, I thought I was just crazy or something… I needed to hear this, so thank you. Also, I hate having to pay so much money just to exist and get an education. I wish I could afford to move. 😭💔
12:04 Consumer Protections in the US vs Europe
12:52 Workers' Rights in the US vs Europe
Well said and with respect. I just wish it was easier to move aboard. If I could find a gaming company job to work for with ease. It be awesome. Sadly I don’t get enough time off to visit my family overseas. I’d love to move to Europe, but my family lives in Southeast Asia. Still to me the most important thing to me is community. Growing up I don’t feel that closeness as I did when I went to my mom’s home country. Very friendly and your neighbors are like family. Theres plenty of wonderful communities out there waiting to be explored.
14:45 Don't US Workers Earn More Money?
16:23 Do Americans Romanticise Europe Too Much?
This video is almost 1 year old. Why no new video's?
Hmm what has changed. Did you move back to the US because the US is pulling it's troops out of Europe, is it because of Islam flooding Europe, is it because your new found perceived freedoms are dwindling because your wealth is no longer protecting you from reality.
Like everyone else that could afford to leave, your living above most people that have endured living there under changing laws that is slowly taking away their few rights.

23:06 Conclusion & Outro
Evan poor Evan. Unanimous? I wonder about people like you. Where do you get your info? Over 80% of Americans that have lived in Europe eventually come back to the US. While only 20-30% of Euros move back to the continent. These are modern trends. People vote with their feet and more Euros than Americans decide to stay in their adopted country. I only wish more Americans see you as a natural skeptic. You don't speak for others. You're only speaking for yourself.
If you're new to my channel and videos, hi! I'm Evan Edinger, and I make weekly "comedy" videos every Sunday evening. As an American living in London I love noticing the funny differences between the cultures and one of my most popular video series is my British VS American one. I'm also known for making terrible puns so sorry in advance. Hope to see you around, and I'll see you next Sunday! :)
If you want to know HOW I make my videos including gear, lighting, all the tiddly bits that connect it all together, (with cheaper alternatives and kit I used to use), I've listed each item, what it's great at, and why I use it on the gear section of my website here:
Honestly, if America just had more vacation time and a better healthcare system the country would be elite. Add in some more public transport and you have yourself a winner.

None of this is relevant to larger issues and its nontent. Nothing you are saying is relevant at a large scale. You're talking points are neighborhood and local issues aside from gun ownership which IS important in the case of fighting back against tyranny. I am glad you're not in America as right now, more than ever we need patriots, not complainers. As an aside I lived in the following countries:
Brazi, UK, Turkey, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and Singapore. Currently living in San Diego, CA and it's the absolute best place in the world to live. A lot of what you complained about is financially related. If you have money a lot of the things you're talking about go away. If you're broke everywhere sucks. If you're well off everywhere is great. I don't like people like you who have to paint this picture of the "greener grass" to justify your move. It creates disdain for the country that enables you to complain about the life we (Americans) built for you to complain about. Think deeper about what you're putting out into the world. I don't know how you have any followers, I don't know why this was recommended to me. Maybe the most boring 25 minutes of my life. I don't even know why I'm writing this comment. All of it, a waste of time.

In the US, they have the freedom to drive, in the rest of the world, for the most part, we have the freedom to not have to drive, or drive if you want/need to

In the UK, after there were two many shootings, they banned guns except for very specific limit circumstances, and requiring a license to own.
In the USA, after too many shootings, that keep happening, they are considering the teachers having guns to protect themselves......

Need to say that British parliament system is even shittier than in USA. But they both should be get demolished and move to multiparty system like all others. Now you cant change anything by voting in both countries.

This video is a masterclass in post-hoc cope. You're comparing your adult life as a successful London creator to your youth working a low-wage Pizza Hut job in New Jersey. That is a completely skewed baseline.
For skilled professionals, the US wage premium entirely eclipses the European safety net. London corporate and tech salaries are notoriously low relative to the brutal cost of living there. Bragging about an EU consumer refund for a MacBook doesn’t offset the loss of massive lifetime wealth accumulation.
Worse, you're romanticizing failing systems. Praising the NHS because they treated your gas pain for free completely ignores the systemic collapse and historic wait times that actual UK residents face daily.
It’s fine to prefer walkability, but masking a massive drop in purchasing power and a decaying public sector as a unilateral victory requires a lot of selective memory.

Guns bad, trump bad, my country bad because it’s not blue any more , waaaa waaaa waaa. Have fun with the pitiful police department, dual policing and knife crimes! 😂😂😂😂
@TinMan6374I lived in London for a short time many years ago and agree with pretty much all of this but there are two points that should be mentioned. The first is that things like Brexit and attacks on privacy are real things that have affected people's rights and ability to make a living. Yes, it can still be considered better overall but in some ways the UK has been drifting towards a lot of the same nonsense as the US. The second thing is that many Americans have already known it's better in Europe but there's one main thing stopping a move - lack of opportunity and privilege. Plenty would already be there but it's quite difficult for them. Not everybody can get a company to sponsor their work visa or make a huge investment that would allow them a path to residency. The last thing I'll say is that, while it is completely understandable to want to escape the hellscape that is the US, many including the ones who can leave, choose to stay and fight for a better future. Unfortunately, it can feel impossible most of the time but it's worth stating that not leaving can still have value if you work towards something better that benefits everybody.

@davidmartin3450America don’t want you back anyways
@ranieralacar3346Thank God you can't move back.
@DravotkingI appreciate this vid, and it is accurrate for the large majority of Americans. However, I will say that for some small number of highly skilled workers (at least in tech), the difference in pay is so massive that it outweighs the other factors. The jobs Im interested in, the pay is more than 2x as much in the US vs the UK. The amount Im able to save from such high pay will allow me to reach financial independence in just a few years.
@maximumscience113 years without ranch is crazy
@myster5yNo more american dream, it turned into a toxic violent self destructive country.
I lived 6 years in USA as a french man, I won't go back. Everywhere else has better to offert. Even very poor countries have at list humility.
Americans in the US are the type of people to say they want less rights because freedom or some shit.
@Khaelis_sUSA : Freedom Of Speech
U.K : We Will Arrest You For a Meme
I don't spend 20% of my salary yearly for my Healthcare. But you're paying 20% of your salary for healthcare yearly in forms of tax. Your thoughts?
@JJ-hh4igAll of the benefits are from your pocket in forms of high taxes. You pay 55-65% of your salary. Your Healthcare is not free. It is paid by you.
@JJ-hh4igIt's OK. All of Europe wants to come here now because they think the US is heaven. Go figure. 🤷🏻♂️
@vuguRight.. Because the immigration in London is so great.
@coolStoryBro91How high are the knife crimes where you are bud? 😂
@gavin7516What is funny to most Europeans today is the fact that an American think the UK, the UK... is a great place to live. Something most Europeans do not think.
@Lobos222Ah yes we've outgrown the possibility of governments becoming tyrannical. A utopia if you will.. What an idiot..
@frostyheat228:48 Now that you mention the "yha, just risk your life..." phrase to describe certain commuting possibilities in the US the whole insurance business makes much more sense to me
@mathiasfaber3101His life is gonna change in a Muslim Minute.....don't let him back in lol.
@theIMspongeAmerican here......nobody I know is buying any of this guys crap......Get a job get those other things.
@theIMspongeWhat about all the immigrants and stabbings and rapes? You also do not have the freedom of speech in the UK.
@Brandon.w.MillerAll countries have good and bad..
@oldheadgreezee2175you didn't learn anything there... you are comparing same values an american would. maybe it's just me or am I too american optimistic to expect more intangible goods like history, conversations, art, w/e... but it has to be real...
@sbenkimmie9579Sounds like America win. We lost nothing.
@FesIRLMaybe our immigration problem is too many Americans?
@stevemsmith1When I lived in th UK I worked for and international company that had offices in the USA and London. This was a very stressful position and I was so stressed out so badly that at the age of 32 i came doen with shingles that kept me from having a decent nights sleep, going to an MD and obtaining the medicine the newly introduced R/X was about $10,. A week or two later I had to go to NYC and thought I should get another R/X in case my shingles should return. The R/X in NYC was @$350 for 7 pills.........enough said
@garymiller8287Londen is not Europe still America light
@RichardDuinmayerNot to defend the US but the FDA is one of the few good things we have. We don't have more additives. We just require companies list them all.
@yaboycynI lived in Bali for a while but I didn’t like their politics and that I couldn’t invest in property. The USA offers much better opportunities for growth, success, and financial security.
