How Boxer Engines Work - Plus Their Pros and Cons

Video Overview & Insights

In this video I'll go over how the design of a flat boxer engine is different to the inline 4 cylinder engines and also the V shaped engines out in the market today. Also I'll go over my thoughts on what are the pros and cons of a boxer engine. Are there any mpg benefits or costs? Is maintenance a problem on these engines? What effect does a boxer engine have on handling? Is a boxer engine safer in case of an accident? and more.

I have a "Subaru impreza 1.5F" from 2009.Whenever I am driving in first gear (above 2000 RPM), and I press the clutch down slowly (after steping of the gas), I hear something Spinning really fast and the sound is somehow linked only to first gear only because when I do the same thing for all other gears it is ok. Can you suggest me some tests to do (or maybe you have heard that noise in other Subarus maybe and let me know if it is a normal sound in these models)?.

Flat engines work the same way as all other internal combustion engines - Intake, compression, power and exhaust strokes. However they have better balance.

My 2014 Outback started shaking and it turns out that one of the spark plugs somehow broke. They managed to get it out but when they put in the new one it was loose. So now I’m told they might have to replace the head. It’s gonna cost a few G’s.

I would love to see a snowmobile manufacturer put a boxer engine with a turbo charger in a sled!!!

I also heard there´s more uneven piston wear on boxers, due to gravity.

@gse3862
@

Boxer engines have inherent flaws, too; they are notorious for oil leaks, head gasket failures & oblong cylinder wear- due to the forces of gravity acting on the pistons...

Boxer vs. Flat engine. Boxer engine's connecting rods, each, have their own crank journal. Flat engines aka 180 degree V engines, run two rods, on one journal, like a 60 or 90 degree V engine.

I don't understand how a company that's been primarily making boxer engines for decades, still has notable issues with them? They've recalled so many just in the past few years alone. When it comes to engine R&D, boxer is mostly where they put their money into. Its their bread and butter and they still cant get away from these issues.

Mr Subaru has an amazing video detailing the boxer engine and the reason for the head gasket failures. He even knows the problematic years.

Looking forward to your input!

I've been looking into possibly getting a BRZ/86, so if you include information about that engine's reliability in the next vid, it would be greatly appreciated!

4:39 - No, not 2 camshaft sensors. Just one on the EJ25s, except for the ACVS versions, and the right bank sensor isn't use for timing, so doesn't really count. ;)
