For basketball you need to buy is some shoes. shorts, shirt and you are ready. Same for football (socker). For hockey... oooh. For American Football - ooh. Those are rich mans sports.

Is hard to watch coverage in Canada when you are trying to watch coverage about the Team you are supporting or the game you are watching and broadcasting manages to talk about the Maple Leafs every time they have or they cover stories of American teams rather than Canadian ones… sometimes it lacks narratives 😢

I heard that the best players are not playing in Canda due to the belief that taxes are higher there. But Montreal is playing well in the playoffs now. Fingers crossed.

The people have been demoralized. Most are in survival mode & add to this the insane cost of living & you get a decline in enthusiasm about sports.

Factors in Canada: Wokeness, fewer native-born Canadians, mass immigration, high costs, hockey tickets expensive, companies buying local ice rinks to raise ice time prices, fewer kids being born, and so on. YOUR CULTURE IS BEING REPLACED WITH THE OUTSIDE WORLD

So why is Hockey wanting to grow its appeal when it so expensive that it has become a game for the elite? It used to be a game blue collar people before it was taken over by billionaires ? It culture is still the same it hate women it hates lgbt it is racist etc So why?

The sport is too expensive. Life is much harder today that it was once. That is the biggest factor.

As an American that has made fun of Canada as long as I can remember, Hockey culture is probably the single about Canada that I envy the most. I always wanted to play hockey, but when we went to register, just like the video mentioned, my parents looks at the cost of ice time and equipment and that quickly led to me playing soccer. Ice Hockey is awesome, I hope my kids can play now that we live near a rink

Good take on the situation. What makes it more difficult for Canada is the pool of potential players they are pulling from. Canadas population is about 42 million. The USA has over 350 million and that’s why hockey is surging in the States compared to hockey. Most of the players on USA hockey team came through the development program established shortly after 1980 Miracle on Ice. Together with pricing out families that can’t afford it and you are looking at a downturn for sure.

This might sound like hyperbole 24 hours after the Olympics, but Canada might never win gold again. Maybe in 2030, but after that, it’s long term prospects are not good.

For all the reasons you laid out, hockey in Canada is in decline. But the internal politics is going to doom it.

I believe Alberta is going. It will be ugly, but there is no incentive for Alberta to stay. Albertans have real grievances that are not being addressed let alone even being noticed in Ottawa. The time toss them a bone was 15 years ago…. I don’t see how Carny can placate them now.

If Alberta goes, there goes a quarter of Canada’s GDP. Energy prices will skyrocket. The economy will go into a Great Depression.

And it’s going to empower more separatist movements. If Alberta goes, so does Quebec in my opinion. And I also think Saskatchewan and parts of Manitoba will follow.

So that leaves Ontario, BC and the Maritimes- all isolated geographically from one another and half their economy taken in the divorce. Those provinces are all also the oldest provinces in the Confederation and the ones with largest percentage of immigrants.

How can youth teams survive if the economy is in a depression? How can parents afford hockey if they can’t afford rent? How Hockey Canada invest in player development if players can afford to play the game to begin with?

And, while Ontarians dominate the National Team roster, the loss of those provinces will certainly be felt.

Meanwhile Hockey USA, Sweden, Czechia, Finland are dumping money into player development… and they have caught or are catching up.

And finally, back to demographics, certainly some first-generation Canadians will adopt the game. We will see Punjabi and Chinese players join youth leagues. But in the same numbers as Canadians? No way. Native Canadians aren’t having enough children (they can’t afford right now!). Mass immigration might help the labor market but if team Canada is gonna be pulling players only from Ontario, BC and the Maritimes… it’s screwed.

Sorry to be all doom and gloom but I think we are going to look back on the last few decades as the Golden Years… something we’ll never be able to recapture.

"growing the game" was code for decreasing canadian influence in hockey but most canadians just happily went along with it and still claim "it's our game!"

I played hockey in elementary school it wasn’t bad then junior high they wanted like 4K that was the end of my career lol

The NHL is a poorly run league to begin with, but their lip service to “growing the game” is sickening. If they had clue, they’d be fully engaged with the younger generations and getting them involved in the game consistently. Instead, they trot out poor old Willie O’Ree 50 times per season, and spit out their “Hockey is for everyone” phrase anytime they can.

Hockey, and all sports, is crap. It is watered down by bringing in new franchises and the depth pool of good talent is not changing.
Additionally, the introduction of betting has allowed the big betters to fix games, so most games are now fixed and the outcome is already known before the game starts. So I don’t watch any games anymore it is just a waste of time and money! 😮

I played hockey for a year in a boys team (I’m a black woman) and my brother played for ten years. One thing I’ll say it’s that it is truly not the most friendly environment, the team mentality is almost cult like there’s so much racism and once you get to the teenage years it just becomes weird lots of odd initiation alcohol and sex related, and sex crimes are normalized. Add to the fact that so many people are doing private coaching summer coaching and if you want any chance, even in the minors you have to do prep school… overall it’s pretty toxic and ridiculously unaffordable (including the time dedicated as a parent.) I can understand why people are more and more turn off by the sport. Plus hockey players have a terrible reputation. As a quebs and a Canadian I would still put my kids in hockey but I understand why many won’t.

Hockey today is too safe and boring. The NHL lost its edge by trying to appease non viewers in the US and around the world.

I love hockey 🏒 I grew up on it, I watch it, I play it on Xbox, I play street hockey, Floor hockey, but my mom (with 5 kids) could never afford any hockey equipments. She knew I was in love with the sport,, some of my friends who actually played Triple A hockey were pushing me to play also because they saw my potential. They said some guys can't even do that on my team. I really believed I was gon a play ice hockey one day..my point is it's those damn expensive hockey equipments is why parents are choosing Soccer ⚽ Basketball 🏀 and baseball ⚾ over Hockey 🏒

From a viewership standpoint, hockey's biggest challenge is that in order to get the full experience you really have to see it live and in person. TV simply does not do it justice.
