Texas, vast plains and thorny scrub, live oaks and desert wind, has carried human footprints for millennia. Long before county lines and interstate ribbons, hunter-gatherers followed migrating herds across what would become the Panhandle and the Gulf Coast. Over thousands of years, distinct Native nations took root: the Caddo in the well-watered east built towns around ceremonial mounds and farmed corn; the Karankawa and Coahuiltecan fished brackish bays; the Apache and later the horse-borne Comanche ranged the High Plains, hunting bison and guarding the grass seas. The word that would one day name the land, “Tejas,” adapted by Spaniards from a Caddoan greeting meaning “friends”, was a promise that contact might be peaceful.
