Can Democrats Overcome GOP Gerrymandering?

Video Overview & Insights

Our chief political analyst, Nate Cohn, who writes The Tilt newsletter, looks at the Republicans’ advantage in the House of Representatives after partisan redistricting. To win the House, how much of the popular vote would Democrats need to win? #elections

Yeah it’s too bad democrat can not gerrymander more to counteract the republicans. Oh wait they were already did just to get to where they are before the republicans did.

— @RobotWizard007

Whether it's reporting on conflicts abroad and political divisions at home, or covering the latest style trends and scientific developments, New York Times video journalists provide a revealing and unforgettable view of the world. It's all the news that's fit to watch.

this is hilarious. More democratic states have been pushing and voting for redistricting, currently there are more Republican states this year... because they have their meetings about it earlier.

Over 14 democrat states are planning to redistrict vs the 6 republican states

redistricting/gerrymandering is primarily a democrat tool and was started by the democrat party to utilize false "inclusion"

“Interesting” is a strange way to describe a rigged election. President Rump keeps screaming about rigged elections while actively rigging them. What is even happening?

This is why I don't watch NYT or stuff like that. The sheer toxicity of the comments always brings me down.

Republicans eliminated the Democrats' structural advantage -- districts drawn purely to rig the result for race-based representation. No more racism in outcome-based gerrymandering.

Let's report the facts without bias, NYT.

NYT is the propaganda arm for Democrats. This is not "free press" behavior

I'm sure the Democrats have NEVER done this ever. Especially not in the 30's, 60's, 70's, 80's, early 2000's and early 2010's. Almost like if you have a memory that isn't one sided you can see past the bs that nytimes throws out

USA is supposed to be a democracy, right? The people elect the representatives, not the representatives to elect the representatives.

Remind your republican friends that they are the minority and that their politics are rejected by Americans.

Partisan getrymandering should be illegal. It's an affront and attack on democracy.

In a real democracy this is impossible. Every vote should count and every vote should be equal. The USA needs a new election system that is fair and balanced. The current one is a century out of date. My country switched to proportional representation in 1914.

@rogerwilco2

Let’s hope the Republicans win and the white supremacist KKK party never gets into power again. Time to end the Democrat party forever. They have tried to disenfranchise black voters for 200 years. Lately they tried to gerrymander Virginia to make sure to enshrine redlining and segregation into the state. When their Supreme Court ruled it unconditional, they tried to ignore the ruling. We need a common sense approach to finally dismantle the Democrat party forever and replace it with an American party.

Pass the Fair Representation Act now. It nearly eliminates gerrymandering and opens 3rd parties and independents to eliminate the spoiler vote.

@yolo_burrito

No, because they've already gerrymandered the crap out of all their states.

@patrickh9937

Democracy in America is now decided by who can rig the maps the best & win election lawsuits in court after picking favorable judges. How far we have fallen.

@ObiWill1
@

And don’t forget Trump started this whole mess when he set the stupid, unpatriotic precedent by calling Texas to redraw the maps to add 5 more seats. Corrupt …. Tyrant… to put it nicely, but I had even more not as nice words reserved…

@WinginWolf
@

If Republicans don't have the votes than how can they win? It's suppose to be the most votes win.

@CureTide

If you are voting for a side that is actively protecting PDFs, you are beyond morally bankrupt and pure evil. There is nothing you can say or do that would change my mind about that. Nothing.

@OldAsDuck
@

Calling it “a lot more interesting” instead of calling it what it is is fing bonkers 😵‍💫🤦‍♂️. “We call this a structural adv” FFS, stop tying ur self in knots to avoid calling it what it is, rigging the election. U have no qualms about reporting Conald saying 2020 (or any election he loses) is rigged inspire of evidence to the contrary. Meanwhile ur jumping through hoops to avoid calling actual bold faced election rigging in broad daylight anything but. Ugh 🤦‍♂️, 🇺🇸 is so self cooked….

@dkarras
@

Keep it interesting? How about we keep it representative? Voting in America is a joke.

@fromonhigh891
@

The Republicans are literally invalidating elections they don't like in some places. Democracy is dead and the Dems are doing nothing about it.

@lephtovermeet
@

Replace “interesting” with “corrupt”.

@Bonyari_Boy
@

They cheated so they could win a midterm because they knew they were unpopular. If the polls were really great like they say why would they need to do this? Election fraud. But they've never presented evidence in court. Just fake documentaries that get taken down and trump just looking at it lolol

@WhoFramedMSG
@

No. We call that cheating and election fraud.

@VanillaGorilla7

I think they screwed up in Texas cuz they in their ignorance skewed towards the Latino vote which after all of the ICE atrocities - will not go in their favor. I am very happy about that.

Utahan here. The new democratic district came from a statewide vote in 2018 (ya know democracy.)

Our state Republican legislature has pulled every nonsensical trick in the book to overturn the vote, but it’s held up in our state courts. I’m willing to bet it’s the only election where this district survives 😢.

@bygoneunicorn
@

One thing most folks don't take into account: gerrymandering is not a guarantee. The only way they can make new "Republican" districts is by diluting existing ones. If they dilute too much, if they get too greedy, then Democrats can win more seats than if they never gerrymandered in the first place.

@mixtermixtermixter
@

wondering why you are using the word race. science says that "races" are not existing.

@anishahuemer1728

GOP can't win with their ideas - they offer nothing, so they win by rigging the system
