From Korea to the U.S.: My Emotional Journey After Moving Back Home After 5 Years | Life Update 2020

Video Overview & Insights

Transitioning back to the U.S. after five years in Korea was one of the most challenging experiences of my life. In this video, I share my personal journey of returning home, navigating uncertainty, and rebuilding my life in America.

Few weeks me too to go back home am really nervous

— @whathappened5104

After leaving a life I had built abroad, with stability, independence, and community, I faced an emotional rollercoaster upon returning. From struggles with career setbacks to adjusting to a new normal during the pandemic, this past year has been a lesson in resilience and self-discovery.

In this video, I discuss:

I’m about to move back to the states from Germany after 5 years I’m terrified

— @BohemianPotanist

✅ Why I decided to leave Korea.

✅ The unexpected challenges of transitioning back home.

I don't even know why i returned to my country Cameroon after 1 year due to immigration issues in Turkey Istanbul, how am i gonna start over again while my friends have progressed and are all looking for me to show me their achievements i am hiding. I think i should try to return to Turkey or try another country or maybe stay home. I am depressed lost and confused. Thank God i stumbled on this video today made me feel a lot better i am not alone. i pray i succeed and achieve my goals even though i don't have an exact goal or plan yet. I am turning 28 in a few days.

— @Upcoming-Videographer

✅ How the pandemic impacted my plans.

✅ Lessons learned about self-worth and rejection.

Nice video, I am also a bit nervous when I will return home. Currently been in UAE for 7 years

— @BigBlimpChronicles

✅ What’s next for me as I rebuild my life.

I also reflect on my time in Korea, the incredible memories I made, and why I wouldn’t trade those years for anything.

Landed in Pittsburg after a year of living in the EU- immediately in debt, immediately stressed. Immediately pissed off…. Ugh.

— @allendean9807

Im moving abroad in like 24days I’m type worried if I’m putting my life on hold retirement and etc but I’m thinking if I do come back I’ll just go to Florida. I have a degree in accounting and I figure Florida is a good place if I end up coming back since there are many transplants and most people are not locals so everyone is looking to meet people. Preferably I’d like to come back to my home town but my home town happens to be nyc which is mad expensive lol

probably only North Korea, Iran & Saudi Arabia are worst than living in the US. U probably got depressed and daydreamed a lot about the good old South Korean days.

Thanks for sharing - I'm in the process of transitioning back to Australia after 21years in China, currently in Singapore having some transition counselling here before arriving in Australia. I know it is going to be tough. I appreciated your honesty in some of things that you found difficult on your return.

"How can I get a teaching job in Korea?", "Where should I start?", "What is life like abroad?"

Are these some of the questions that you need answered? TravelingNat can help guide you on your path to teaching abroad. Nathalie has worked as an ESL teacher in South Korea for 4 years, and understands exactly the thoughts and emotions you may be going through when planning to make this huge lifestyle change.

I’m seeing this video later but also been thinking about returning to the US after 7 years. I’m prepared as far as I thought out the logistics and the plans I have (as well as realities of how difficult or time consuming it may be) and I’m not going to lie its terrifying. Even though long term it’s probably going to be better for my goals and desires in life - my life is truly established here. Have my own visa own home I’m in my desired industry with options (whereas it will be hard to land my first job in the US) its hard to decide when to make the move because I know there will be a transition period of unemployment staying with family and not knowing how long that will last.

— @SaraFlara

Maybe your questions aren't just teaching related, that's OKAY! If you want to chat with Nathalie and pick her brain, this is the way to do it!

Hello Nat. I have been watching your videos for a long time. Thank you so much for posting your reasons why you left Korea and your adjustment back to life in the US. I rediscovered your last couple videos as I am currently going through this right now. I can't decide between leaving Korea or staying. My decision changes everyday. It's been so helpful listening to what your are going through, how you are adjusting back to life in the US, and where you are now.

Had to pause the video to comment how much I relate to what you're saying (you just mentioned the 5mos mark after being home). I moved back to my home country last year due to Covid after losing everything including, home, car and career in our adopted country (Spain) where I'd lived for nearly a decade and given birth to my child there. She's still not fully adjusted to life in UK and neither have I; in fact, having passed a year of being 'home', it feels like my homesickness for my adopted country has increased!

I don't often talk about Spain with my daughter in case it makes her miss it more, but she misses it anyway - after all, she was born there! So, we've started to introduce some factors into our lives...how and what we eat, routines, speaking Spanish here and there. We came from an idyllic island in the Mediterranean, which is all she's ever known, to inner city living, cold, wet days, and dodging dog muck every day on school run.

Also, it feels like I'm fighting not to be dragged into my old negative mindset, because the people I know here are the same as they ever were and know the old me who wallowed with them and not the go-getter I became. And I can see said friends' eyes glaze over when I talk about Spain, like I'm bragging when it's been my life for the past 9+ years.

Not to mention my hectic career coming to a screeching halt with the pandemic and I still haven't figured out what I can do instead. I've only ever worked as a musician and I'm in my forties now. I couldn't do a 'regular job' and no one would hire me to do one anyway! x

Its going to be hard…its just life…i bet it was hard the first time living in Korea and learning the language/ readjusting. So its most likely going to be like that coming home. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself to transition. It will happen naturally. Focus on being yourself and try and get some help like therapy, getting out and talking to friends (like you mentioned) you are never alone and I’m glad that you follow your heart and go where the unknowns is!! Anyways Welcome back home, I know theres lots of fun and exciting change going to happen in the future for you! God bless 💕🙏🏽😘

Thank you for sharing your thought about racism. I feel good and agree with the most of your analysis. However, I would like to share just few things I think differently why Korean acts like that toward non-korean people from the other country.
About preference whiter skin tone of Koreans, it is not from wanna be Caucasian skin. We had the class hierarchy from very long times ago and 양반 (novel class) tends to have whiter skin because they did not work on the sun but 천민 (low class people in hierarchy) their skins were tends to be darker because of environment of their works (farming, fishing, building stuff). For me as korean born and raised in Korea, I am pretty sure majority of korean who wanna have whiter skin color is NOT from wanna be Caucasian. I saw some white youtuber from different channel also said Koreans always try to be like Caucasian.... So, I felt there would be some chance to bring people misunderstanding the reason many Korean prefer whiter skin. It is not from wanna change to some specific race.

it does seems like... you know everything already. I totally agree what you said in this video. Getting a job in U.S it tough... I studied in U.S and getting a job was... not easy. I went down deep I ever imagined. Rejections....... they pushed me even deeper...... So, I might feel your feeling in this video but.... I believe you will get a great job eventually. You are smart enough and your ability to analyze this world is very logical. Since this video has been 1 year and more, guessing you would be busy with your new job and new life. Hope you enjoy your life in U.S back and thank you for telling good things about Korea! Cheers! 화이팅!!!!

I've moved between Korea and the U.S. a few times over the past decade and yeah - the reverse culture shock is just as wild as the culture shock of moving abroad. It's like a reboot where you go back to an old operating system. Suddenly you understand what everyone else around you is saying. And suddenly you're bombarded by everyone's trivial daily bullshit. Best of luck acclimating!

I will be returning home after 5 years living in Australia. I’m glad I found your video. I’ve been really distressed and anxious

@lilfroggo9897
@

I just moved home from NZ after living abroad from Canada for 5 years. It’s month 5 and I’m in a severe depression.
I can’t stop thinking that life would be so much better if I just moved back, and why go through this struggle to try and reassert myself back in to a life in Canada that I’m so disconnected from.
I hope I start to feel better soon. Thanks so much for making this video, it makes me feel less alone. Hope you’re doing okay now ☺️

You are not alone in feeling the way you do. I returned home in 2020 from Asia after 5 years and I STILL feel disconnected from the American experience.

What's up Lady!! Um would you go back, or try someplace else? I don't even know why you came back. You know how many people would sell their body parts to have it as good as you did abroad. People are trying to get out of the Matrix, and you came BACK 🤯😱. The political B.S and you came back. See the grass always looks greener from the inside looking out, but it's not better. It might be time to pull out the best book you have---your Passport!!! Lol You can always comeback home. Good luck. Your such a strong sister. Its just a matter of time before you get the right Keycard!!! Keep your Head Up!!😇😉🙃

"Ppl think I talk about Korea too much" I FEEL YOU girl I’m German and I’ve lived in England for 2 years and so many people get annoyed by me talking about it all the time but literally everything I’ve done and experienced in the past two years is related to England

You're a really wonderful person. I been listening dor the last couple hours. Be amazing to meet you. If you're ever in the Portland, Oregon area.

This is honestly something I am not looking forward to when I finally leave next year. I only met you once when you were here and it was great when I did because you just seemed like you knew what you were doing but of course that isn't the case and I didn't know you personally, still don't. But one thing I am looking forward to when I leave is going to visit the new friends I made that went back home before me. I'm so ready to go home but that depression from the freedom you get here in Korea will be real and it's already in my plans to go abroad again after I take a brief break. So I wish you the best in your endeavors. I'm so happy for you and glad you spoke up about everything. It was definitely important that you did so.

I returned from Abu Dhabi I’m 2019 after 5 years. I did get a job in 2020, but the transition has been tough for me as well, despite the job. It’s definitely a mental thing. The life there was so much more simple. I miss things about it for sure. But I wouldn’t move back but visit for sure. Give yourself time to transition. There is no number attached to how long it will take you. Just embrace each moment and grow from it. It’ll happen! By the way, Looking beautiful as usual.

I can relate to some of these things and I'm still thinking about going abroad for educational purposes.

For someone who has been traveling for 6 years, I'm still hesitant about it. And I gathering information on how and what and where to be and so on.

These videos of traveling about Korea and Thailand and Malaysia and Singapore were a great help to me to take and put together some information.

I kind of wonder though, knowing how hard Covid hit everywhere, would staying in Korea not be equally hard? It's been a particularly hard year. I get what you are saying though, I am an expat who will most likely never go back home because of the reasons you mentioned.

Thank you Nat for sharing. You have such a wonderfully natural positive personality, but everyone has that time when they have moments of lows and times to adjust to change and direction. Please be mindful that everything has been affected by this year of COVID-19 and it was felt through employment and business transitions which would definitely affect your career choices and personal life. Being delayed is not being denied. Keep striving for your dreams and goals.

We (family of three) came back from London after a year away and it took some adjustments. I cannot imagine the transition after 5 years. What did help was making sure that one of us had a job lined up. Good luck on your journey and congratulations on your paid Internship 🥳

I feel the same way! i’ve graduated from the us around 3 years ago and i love being home, there are a lot of things we have here that the us doesn’t have but i miss the independence and freedom. i miss being out and about. i would give anything to go back to the states or live somewhere abroad. i have a job but i’m not very happy here. i’m thankful that i have a job, that i’m home and i’m with family but i just feel out of place.

like you, i’ve missed out on so many things my friends experienced while i was living abroad. it was difficult to find a middle ground in terms of experience.

i’m trying to find a way to live in the us but i didn’t do well in school so i can’t go to grad school sadly :/

i wish you all the best and happiness in the future. good luck 🥰❤️

So glad to see you're healthy and well! Lol my new covid greeting.

I hope things are looking up for you on the job front. I loved watching your vlogs when you were abroad and I'm glad to see you are vlogging a bit again. My sister taught English first in China and now in another country in Asia and has been gone for almost a decade so tour videos gave me comfort, knowing she was probably OK.

Korea was part of your formative years, you have every right to talk about your experience.
