France records hottest night and day as Europe heatwave spreads | DW News

Video Overview & Insights

France has recorded both its hottest night and hottest day since records began, with temperatures exceeding 44°C as a severe heatwave grips much of Europe. Schools have closed, transport is disrupted and health authorities warn of growing risks — especially for vulnerable groups. Scientists say such extreme heat is becoming more frequent and intense as the climate warms. We explore what’s driving the surge in temperatures - and how hot Europe could get in the future.

Because of an order from the French government, Midea’s factory in Wuhu produced 20,000 portable air conditioners in just three days, and they have already been shipped. What other country in the world has this kind of industrial capability?

Meanwhile, Ursula von der Leyen, sitting comfortably in an air-conditioned room, is talking about launching a trade war against China. This would be economic suicide for Europe.

Stay safe ! And avoid the midday sun !

Greece stands with France now and always! In good and in bad times !

Condolences to all families and friends of the victims!

In Greece there is a lot of air condition knowledge and experience. There should be sharing between Greece and France regarding it.

Much love and support from Greece to France and all French brothers! 🇬🇷 ❤️ 🇫🇷

08:56 Is more AC the answer?

No they didn't, unless it was over 52°, which a Norwegian newspaper wrote about in 1919, which as they wrote then, they hadn't seen since 1879 in Lyon!
So, unless they experienced warmer than than 52°, no record has been broken and you are lying!

Hello. While Korean summers starting in June are typically hot and humid, it is incredibly cool right now, which is amazing. Someone told me this is what European summers feel like.

American here… I’m sorry but AC is the answer. Rich bureaucrats on TV telling you private AC is not the answer while sitting in a climate controlled government building paid for by your taxes is insane.

Yes let’s all continue stifling our dying economies to combat greenhouse gases while china and India do nothing. That’ll really help 👍

Planting many more trees really does make a big difference. Some people may be skeptical, but it works. Hard surfaces such as roads and buildings absorb the light energy from the sun and radiate that energy back in the form of heat. Trees will shield some of those surfaces from the sunlight, keeping those surfaces cooler and absorbing CO2 at the same time. Homes that are shaded by trees won't be as hot. Cities will be able to cool off more at night.

Oh... you don't have air con at home... ? well... we have air con in every home, we also have air con fitted in the Pigsties and the farmhouses, I know..I know.. you have freedom and all the bullshits, enjoy your summer.. !!

If greenhouse gas emissions are to be strictly controlled, then a sufficient number of misting systems need to be installed along major outdoor streets to cool things down during the summer. Why has Europe deteriorated to such a state? It is such a simple matter.

An example....

Data Centres are basically ginormous electric heaters and their fuel can be anything from gas guzzlers to SMRs to Wind Turbines to Battery Power to National Grid Power, but there is no getting away from the fundamental fact that they are in effect massive electric heaters..

I put it to Google A.I.....the answer....

You are exactly right. Physically speaking, data centres act as massive electric heaters because nearly 100% of the electricity they consume is ultimately converted into heat energy.

The Physics of Data Centres

Energy Conversion:..... Servers take in electrical energy to process data.

Heat Generation: Microprocessors encounter electrical resistance while operating.

Total Transmutation: This resistance converts almost all incoming power into heat.

The Cooling Paradox: Massive cooling systems must then use more electricity just to remove that heat.

Now for the figures.....A large data centre typically requires a continuous power capacity of 100 megawatts (MW) or more.

Today we see multiple 100MW electric heaters.

Tomorrow we will see GW heaters.....

Makes one wonder...

Last month we had two weeks hot as the mercury reached at 52 degree Celsius in india and 48 degree Celsius all over India. Imagine 48 to 49 without ac

In France, there's a political debate on AC

The far right Rassemblement National fully supports it but the Greens and far left La France Insoumise are adamantly against it

@varoonnone7159

While our heart goes out for Europeans especially during these testing times (since have lived in Europe and I can empathize people living around that part of world ) the world should know how southeast Asians (especially indians living in South eastern coastal part mainly in coastal Tamilnadu suffer on account of wetbulb temperature caused due to high humidity and geographical position of the place.

The world is in for such extremities unless we as humans are aware of and start seriously introspect about and prevent man made effects (sans Natural phenomenon like elnino, Iod, jet streams, rossby and or kelvin effect, MJO and many climatic factors)

Take care and climatic conditions due reverse

I hold a Master’s degree in Energy Systems from RWTH. Everyone should disregard this so-called expert; the claim that it is 10 degrees cooler in the shade refers to the temperature difference between direct sunlight and shaded areas—it does not significantly alter the ambient air temperature. Furthermore, Europe cannot reverse global warming; the only solution is to use air conditioning to combat heatwaves.

@SongtaoChai
@

There is a misconception that June should not be as hot as the midsummer months (July, August). This is only true for the average temperature. But not for record highs which benefit from the best sun angle you can have during the whole year. Late June and very early July is when record high temperature will happen given sufficiently long weather records.

This is a Southern Australian summer. Hot heat waves. The government needs to advise people on how to stay cool. A simple damp towel around shoulders or a damp towel over their body at night while sleeping. Add a fan to make an evaporative air conditioner. Easy stuff.

A/C is not commonly found in Western European homes. Installing it now would be very expensive and would also threaten the country's energy consumption.

It's no more time for prevention of climate change only, the measures to deal and adapt to it is real and urgent and non optional, specialists on climate change adaptation, any thoughts?

@renatas9641

nobody responsible could warn them about it? and advise as precaution to use AC or some alternatives, I mean... this was expected, wasn't it?

@renatas9641

Air conditioning is no longer a solution, better construction techniques are, better insulation for existing buildings and bio materials for the newly built.

Lets remember that most European countries decommissioned all their nuclear power plans. and have not built any new power plants since 1972 (same as New York state, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts). there is not enough power in any European country to increase the amount of Air Conditioning. People think Florida is hot, in fact it is extremely rare for temperatures to reach over 95 in Florida. and here in Paradise Florida - 100% of every school, factory, shops, residences, hotels, stores are air conditioned.. Actually they are kept to cold. We live on an Island in North East Florida. Today, June 25, was 88 degrees, with an amazing Ocean breeze.
