EVERYTHING You Need To Know About Artist Marketing, Content, and Branding!
Video Overview & Insights
In this episode of The Manager’s Playbook, I'm joined by Nick Ruffalo, SVP of Digital Marketing & Audience Engagement at Big Loud Rock and founder of Unleashed. Nick brings a sharp, systems-level view of how artist branding, content creation, and marketing actually work in today’s landscape.
Appreciate everyone locking in. 🙏
This convo with Nick Ruffalo goes deep and if you’re here, you’re part of the reason we get to keep building space for these real, sharp conversations.
If something hit home, drop a comment, share it with someone building their brand, and hit that subscribe. More episodes on the way.
Let’s keep raising the bar.
This conversation dives deep into what it means to build a real artist brand, one rooted in identity, not aesthetics. Nick explains how most artists confuse content with branding and why that confusion leads to wasted effort and shallow connection. He introduces a powerful framework based on archetypes, helping artists understand the psychology behind how fans perceive them. From the dreamer to the rebel to the wildcard, these archetypes provide a foundation for more authentic, resonant storytelling.
We also explore the evolution of content strategy, the importance of consistent posting, and the key distinctions between discovery, connection, and conversion content. Nick shares how to use content and paid marketing in tandem to move from developing to emerging to breakthrough artist stages. He also breaks down how to build a content machine inside a label environment and why brand clarity should drive every creative decision.
If you’re an artist, manager, or creative operator navigating how to stand out in a crowded digital space, this episode is a blueprint. It’s about building with intention, connecting with your audience, and showing up with fearless clarity in everything you do.
Simply put, a conversation like this doesn't come cheap.
Only 8 minutes in. Sucks that artists with small or no following get punished by algorythms for making diverse music. Digging this video. Thx

This is really great. I am a fan of both of these guys. I am an artist and lawyer who is not bad at songwriting and recording but I have a lot to learn from Nick.

I'm a level ONE. Believe me , I know....cause my wife reminds me.
I'm 53 and I love to create. I didn't get to when I was younger cause me and my wife of 33 years was raising four boys. Do I have a demographic, or do I just stay a Songwriter.
It's a journey and it's a life long process of going through changes.
It's very interesting, especially at this age. I KNOW I'll probably never make it and I never really wanted to be a content creator or an artist per se but I love to create, and the fire is there.
But I think most creators/ artists are having to wear more hats
For example, I couldn't afford to mix or master, let alone hire a producer to find my sound
So I'm learning all the above and see how far I can go.
Music is all I got left, and I'll do it till the day the good Lord calls me home
I'm not delusional , just following a fire 🔥

have no goals that's the cheat code. Excessively questioning if XYZ contributes to the "goal" can waste so much mental energy, I'd argue that it's not up to us as humans to stress on that. Put your head down, do the work day by day and you might look back on your dogwalking days as a current SVP. SUCHHHH great advice by Nick definitely one of my favorite moments on the Manager's Playbook right here.

@worldwidelceYou need to get good performers on this, with a lot of experience... If you want to understand what he means by performers being the face and a persona of the business
@sallydevlin7191I agree that’s why when the veil was removed from Ross and Wayne it was so hard to listen to them religiously agin
@MikeBrown-s7pQuick question. With most of the rappers being sold to us as gang, how does that square with the need for authenticity when one by one, they're being exposed as pedophile gaysta rappers ??
@apacademyPlease include the socials of the guest in the description. Thanks for your work let's continue.
