Video Overview & Insights

Having trouble trying to figure out when you double your consonants? In this English spelling lesson, I look at a few simple rules that are guaranteed to remove any confusion, and to quickly improve your writing skills.

Surprisingly, I've never heard of the CVC rule before โ€” not at school, not in textbooks. Who came up with this rule?

This is very helpful. Although, I find the Stress rule bit confusing. With my Indian accent, I always stress the 2nd syllable in 'enter' and 'exit'. Still a very helpful video.

Hi. I have the question about the word KAYAK ... It has 2 syllables , the last syllable is stressed, it has one consonant preceded with a vowel letter so why we do not double the last letter before edding ing and write the word as KAYAKING ... or we should count the vowel sounds not letters here ? According to the transcription it has more than 1 vowel sound in the last syllable kรฆษชรฆk. And if to look at the some words, usually if they have two consonant ot two vowels at the end the last letter never doubles like in words sail - sailing, fail - failing, abseil - abseiling, absorb - absorbing, acclaim - acclaimimg. But what is interesting that the word (aquit) doubles the last letter, so here qu gives as kw sound and we dont count the letters . The word abhor has two syllables, the last syllable is stressed but it gives the long sound o at the and ....abhorring ...So what to look at ...vowel letters or vowel sounds ... ?
