3p/mile is still too much. Many people who do lots of miles in their job will end up paying way more than they currently do. If the government are trying to persuade us to go to EV then this will not help.

So, your nice, clean, cheap EV is about to be subject to VED, increasing on-the-road charging costs (inc tax & VAT), possible smart meter awareness of home charging and shoulder tariffs and pay-per-mile costs! I'll stick to my petrol car for as long as possible! And, I won't need a pocket full of plastic cards or apps just to "buy" my charging!

Guaranteed 3p per mile is just the introductory price coz as with all new govt charges it'll climb fast forever more!!

Is the gov certified cray cray? (yes). This just encourages inefficient electric vehicles since a more efficient SUV will be charged the same as a less efficient one since its based on miles driven. I understand its a headache to try and tax kwH used to charge the car like fuel duty but I feel like the rate should vary depending on the efficiency spec of the EV.

This is why EVs will eventually fail, they incentivised us to get an EV by no VED and low running costs! Grants for buying an EV and grants to have a charger installed. But now it’s gone from £0 to £200 and now another potential average of £500 a year just to be on the road

Personally not a fan of it staying with the car when you sell it, like road tax used to be. Given that road tax has changed, and you pay this alongside your road tax then I think it would be simpler if it were the same. You can still get all the same checks, and a dealer could simply load miles when first registering in the same way.

This is the thin edge of the wedge. Also, EV depreciation will increase so possibly driving the public away from EVs.

oh ffs. Just get charger companies to add it to the software on the chargers. they you pay per kw and you incentivise efficient evs. Matches how it works for petrol/diesel. yes you don't catch the 3 pin charges, but those are a small portion.

It's not right that someone in an economical Twizzy will pay the same tax as a Porsche Taycan. Fuel tax gets this right; the more energy you use, the more you pay. EVs record their own charging history, so just interrogate it at MOT time and pay per MJ used. That way you can have single common pricing per MJ of energy, across all fuel types.

I will be getting rid of my i4 for a diesel it’s not worth having at all.

So…what if you buy a new EV and you sell it before the first MOT ? Do they come after you , the “previous” owner or does the new owner get lumped with the first 3 yrs mileage to pay for?

I find it incredible concerning how much control some people will willingly give the gov. Allowing tracking of your vehicle?! Really? 3p per mile is an attractive, non offensive tax initially. Once it’s in, they’ll ratchet up the tax every few years. Stick to old ICE vehicles.

£450 per year tax on the heavy road breakers seems reasonable.

Labour will bring it in for all vehicles regardless of power unit , Ev & Hybrid are just the first… It will simply lead to a huge rise is people using mileage blockers until they start recording it via satellite to a cloud server

Paying in arrears makes far far more sense.

The money spent on the admin on this will wipe out any tax revenues

£300 for 10k miles, when per mile cost at pubic chargers for electric is higher than per mile cost of petrol or diesel is crazy. Only worth it if you can charge at home and nanny people can't.

If every new car is going to have to be an EV by 2030, the absolutely massive tax take from fuel duty will have to be made up in ppm charges.

It'll have to go to 6p a mile, then ramp up from there are we are told those with the broadest shoulders and biggest batteries should pay their fair share.
One thing that's never happening is the government reducing its spending to match its income.

I don't mind the idea of paying some tax for a car it is a luxury but:
- Per mile does not incentivize smaller or more efficient vehicles.
- Charging plug in hybrids less makes no sense.
- not charging ice cars is insane.

I dont even care if they drop fuel duty to make sure ice drivers dont miss out get all cars on the same tax footing then separate them by if they are a luxury or if the do harm

I did a calculation when this was first announced, for my petrol car to get down to 3p a mile I would need to get around 80mpg, or 160mpg to reach the 1.5p per mile. I wonder if they are going to do anything to stop people preloading the charges, so I buy a brand new car, in truth I will do 5k per year but if I claim 20k miles estimated n the first year, I will pre-pay four years and avoid the annual prince rises.

Could even get brand new cars being sold as coming with 20k miles.

There will be a return to clocking on an industrial scale.

Regressive tax on rural communities that have only had their public transport options stripped away and local services closed. Taxed more for being abandoned more and more by each government. Bring in tolls, not per mile.

Tes but the road tax for the new EV ive jhst ordered is £680 per year. My 22 year old diesel van is £320. How is that fair?

They still haven't said what happens if you change car during the year. What happens if the previous owner estimated 5k miles and did 50k, does the underpayment stay with the car and it's down to the new owner to pay or does it stay with the previous owner? If the latter, how do they sort that out if the mileage was not recorded at point of sale? This is a stupid scheme and it's going to end up being another clusterfck.

Should have done it on a sliding scale based on the kw size of the motor. It would have been the same setup as engine size in a fossil fuel vehicle. The bigger the motor size, the more electricity your going to use. It would have been a simple fixed price per year, where as the way it is now is messy, with mileage guestimates and logging, a shambles really!.

So what happens when I say I am going to do say 100 miles in the next year and three months before the MOT mileage check I sell the car, does the next buyer pick up the tab?
