Dogs have long been dependable companions by our sides. But it wasn’t always that way, and a look at their closest living relative, the wolf, makes it clear why. Research into dog domestication and intelligence offers clues into what the human-dog relationship is all about. And analyzing dogs’ brain activity and genes may even help answer the question of whether dogs are in it for the food—or if they really love us.

It broke my heart to watch that "scientific experiment" with foxes standing in awful tiny wire cages, never touching ground. I can't imagine their poor paws. I understand science but abhor cruelty.

The foxes are trapped in cages. You are okay with this? You support animal abuse? Maybe they are scared because they are trapped in wire cages?

One thing it forgets to mention is that, like with the foxes in the experiment, we kill agressive dogs and keep friendly ones. Unnatural selection. We bred for friendliness. Same thing is happening with humans I think. Thankfully.

My goodness I understand that understanding animals is crucial in order to save them but the way those foxes are kept it's awful those cages must hurt their paws, and they are so tiny. I hate that we humans test animals as if they were things like rocks. Also I'm only talking about behavioral testing which I think might help us humans treat other beings with more respect I'm not talking about lab tests which are despicable. i'm not talking about lab tests which are despicable. Also animals function differently if we need to test things like medicine on living beings I think those should be people that end the lives of others or go after children, maybe that would make a difference in how often such horrible things occur and the world would be a safer place.

Many programs use rescue animals too so there’s often mutual healing involved ❤
Humans are so stupid. The answer is probably complex. Research is no justification for making an animal uncomfortable. When I would feed a cat in the neighborhood, he wouldn't eat unless I stayed with him even though he was in his neighborhood and safe. He wanted my company.
@Jesse-gr2xoWe raised foxes when I was growing up, and can confirm that creating a very friendly fox is quite easy. And when a fox is happy to see you, it's impossible not to notice. They are incredibly fun, cuddly, and playful.
However, keeping them in the house is NOT a good idea. They're like a dog/cat mix. We would often find one on top the refrigerator, for example, if they were in the house too long.
Dogs are so much smarter then people give them credit for.
(Well, not mine.)

@ZaneTyler-c5q5:12 food or Love? I DO NOT NEED to put my 115lb Alsatian (German Shepherd) in an MRI to know that answer. He may get fresh rice, meat, necessary herbs, Sorghum, collagen every day, Of course they want food, but when we walk to the store and I leave him outside to go in the store and come back out, he acts like it's been a year. Suddenly, a 115lbs of Happiness goes airborne, then will affectionately soft bite my hand so many times I lose count. No food, just me, and he is simply happy. He has so many different expressions of Smiling and laughter faces that it exceeds counting. Always happy, always looking up at me to make sure he's doing the right thing. When ANY animal is loved. id est, dog, cat, bird(YES BIRD & Parakeets DO SMILE) Horses, Those animals will show you incredible things to the limit of their capability...

@cauxzieruffhausen9547That "circle test" would be proven irrrlevant by cats. They would also spend a lot of time with their owner. But they would still not be very trainable. They should examine the difference in motivation between dogs and cats, that would reveal interesting things I think.

We have known for eons that selective breeding works, we didn't need this ignorant experiment to tell us that. Let those foxes out of their cages ffs.

@jeng9927The only thing that bugs me about this is you can't measure love like you can medicine and diseases. I get everyone needs the scientific results but you can't get the same results every time with animals. Like the smartest dogs right now, they don't live in a lab, they live with 1 person or a family. And their "smarts" are labeled by how many words or commands they know.
I have always said "it's the dogs and the horses that helped us shape the world into what it is now, if it wasn't for either of those 2 species I don't think we would've made it this far
