I mean, aren't we doomed either way? We all eventually die, individuals and whole species- "simulation" or not.

Imagine touching your nose with your finger. Obviously, since light travels much faster and the sheer distance, signals sent to the brain from your eyes reach much earlier than from your exteriors, hands legs etc. Yet, you feel your fingers touch your nose at the same time you see it, logically there should be some sort of delay. You see the finger touch your nose and your brain predicts that you will feel it.

Perhaps we are here to learn and do things up until there is nothing more to create and everything eventually just stagnates and at that point everything ends as we no longer have any use.

Why do you need to assume that a computer simulating our universe is subject to the same physical rules as us? If we live in a simulation then the laws of nature we see are just made up, and don't have to reflect the reality of the "base" universe. But in any case, it's only ever necessary to fully simulate a single consciousness (me!) and provide it with suitable sensory inputs.

I like to think that our reality is a simulation and lives are just training or vacation or life extension tech. If my 45 years of life so far can be reduced to hours or minutes in base reality then I can live basically forever. I messed up this life but I'm certain I'll score higher next go round.

Bremermann's Limit soundly trumps this. The amount of mass/energy it would take to completely simulate the entire universe would be the entire universe's mass/energy. A subset of stuff in the universe can only simulate a subset of stuff in the universe, or a lower fidelity version of the whole universe, or more slowly decompress and piecemeal process and then recompress a compressed representation of the whole universe. So if there are simulations within simulations for many layers, the deeper layers are necessarily informationally smaller in some way or another, there is less stuff going on deeper into the nested simulations, so the principle of mediocrity suggests that we are more probably in more shallow layers (where more stuff is going on for us to be among), most probably in the top layer.

Base reality versus simulated reality seems a strange question to me. You are still left with the same problem: measuring the consistency of a system from within the system itself. That's just math. Perfect knowledge under these circumstances is impossible. Given that, and I do think Gödel was right, the more salient questions seems 1) how accurate (sigma) is our measurement and 2) does what we measure represent any kind of system that can be manipulated to our benefit? These are practical questions.

From outside, any manifold looks like a simulation (a particular boundaried set) to an observer outside said manifold. This is a "god's eye view." Could we even understand data gathered from this observation point? The frame of reference problem rears it's ugly head here.

So do we lose focus to the existential fear of incomplete knowledge or get down to nitty-gritty and concentrate on what benefit, if any, can be derived from said imperfect knowledge we do have in application. Treat it like an engineering exercise. I vote the later.

If this is a simulation...can we get someone to check our code? Things started getting really weird a few patch cycles ago and now the Infinite Cash glitch has broken a lot of important subsystems, the guy from The Apprentice is exploiting all KINDS of bugs, and we kinda-sorta broke into some Old Code for free energy, but it won't go away and it's causing issues with the dynamic weather system.

Somehow, I think that the only useful answer to the question of whether we're in a simulation or not is whether that is true or false. Either answer won't change how things work for us in the end.
