Deutsche Welle” (1981) is a rare German underground and NDW documentary capturing the early 1980s independent music scene in Germany.
Due to several questions about the title, here is a short clarification:
The title “Deutsche Welle” is not a mistake. It is the original title of the 1981 black-and-white film by Merker and Bentele. At that time, the term “Neue Deutsche Welle” was already circulating, and choosing the shorter term was a deliberate and ironic decision.
This was not a television report, but an independent student film. The filmmakers intentionally created a contrast between emerging underground bands and inserted black-and-white sequences of older German Schlager songs (such as “Babysitter Boogie”). These sequences represent a more conservative cultural mainstream — the kind of music often associated with traditional radio culture, including institutions like Deutsche Welle.
The tension between these worlds was the point of the film. The title itself functions as part of that irony and commentary on cultural taste and musical definitions in early 1980s Germany.
Directed by Michael Bentele and Thomas Merker, and shot on 16mm and 35mm black and white film. Shot in 1981 as second filmproject at the University of Television and Film (HFF) Munich, the documentary captures the raw and unpolished moment just before what later became internationally known as “Neue Deutsche Welle”.
Michael Bentele later became the director of the influential German music television show Formel 1.

I’m 10 years late, but this is fantastic. I hate to use “time capsule”, but this film is a lovely “time capsule” capturing the spirit, energy and creativity of this music. I have no clue if any of these people/bands kept creating music, but I hope they did!

In "The Rough Guide to Cult Movies," it was written about a film that watching it for the first time was "like finding gold in your back yard while mowing the lawn." I experienced something similar while watching this truly youthful work for German Underground Music & Neue Deutsche Welle. I immediately played it for the second time. It was wonderful! You took me back to my youth, when on the other side of the Iron Curtain, some people were trying to get to another music - the one that does not tolerate fakery, is full of energy and emotion, does not obey the rules... THANK YOU VERY MUCH from Bulgaria!!! P.S. I admit that I read other reviews and couldn't help but notice the one about Brausepöters' "Bundeswehr" - about the dancer in the back. I'll bet that's a woman (I wish it was)... Superb! And as for the songs, they are all wonderful and full of youthful energy. And another thing is impressive - the great sense of humour and irony. My favorite is probably Mannschreck - "Verdrahtet", but yes, all songs are very fascinating and captivating. I will say it again - WUNDERBAR!!!

@pepklopp3212Es war eine furchtbare Zeit. Das meiste NDW Zeugs mochte ich nicht. Manches war ganz lustig aber das meiste ging mir auf die Nerven. Das war für mich nicht die Antwort auf die furchtbaren Schlager der 70er.
