Dark Souls Commentary

Video Overview & Insights

[00:00:00] - Introduction & Tutorial

I know it was 10 years ago but my favorite video of yours was the devil may cry commentary.

— @zazampow9657

[00:12:35] - Undead Burg 1

[00:27:03] - Undead Parish

The absence of an eight hour dark souls 3 commentary will remain one of the world's greatest tragedies.

— @windyearle

[00:51:07] - Darkroot Garden 1

[01:02:36] - Undead Burg 2

godlike work on the subtitles, huge thanks to whoever worked on that

— @sesamistreet

[01:10:44] - New Londo 1

[01:19:29] - The Depths

17:10 what the heck glitch was that lol

— @joeyjelsch

[01:32:42] - The Catacombs

[01:47:51] - Blighttown

So much of this video has aged SO poorly, not much to Matthews fault (mostly), but oh my goodness.

— @NGB1122

[02:10:46] - Firelink Shrine & NPCs

[02:18:06] - Northern Undead Asylum

5:46

He couldn't do the maths quick enough to halve 48. so instead of saying "you can halve it down to 24" he just says "you can halve it down.... To much less than that"

— @userr1225

[02:29:28] - Sen's Fortress

[02:51:29] - Anor Londo 1

4:58:36 It's incredible how well this video has aged in some takes he said, Matthew had it figured out before everyone else.
Amazing commentary, I'm not big fan of long videos but this one in particular is very fun and It's interesting to hear someone else perspective of the game in detail.

— @TileFrenz

[02:57:30] - Painted World

[03:11:54] - Anor Londo 2

I love that interspersed with well thought analysis are some stories about squabbles between Matthew and his lady friend

— @Dingalow

[03:41:31] - The Duke's Archives

[03:53:51] - Crystal Cave

@3:49:02 Wait.. setting it apart?
Isn't the same sound used for the assassinated ghost ladies of Cainhurst? You know.. the women that had their necks cut out by fanatical church followers and are not stuck in deranged suffering?

— @ビッグ-ボス

[03:59:05] - Demon Ruins

[04:10:25] - Lost Izalith

2:57:18 lol good one

— @brightlightstm

[04:20:22] - Sanctuary Garden

[04:27:07] - Royal Wood

Juan, estás aquí?

— @aztel_

[04:44:47] - Oolacile Township

[04:55:38] - Chasm of the Abyss

I am here for my yearly pilgrimage on 2026. Thanks again for this gem Matt, I pray you are living well

— @ShotgunLlamacide

[05:08:47] - The Battle of Stoicism

[05:19:12] - The Great Hollow

23:48 Another reason Solaire presents as non-hostile is that he's a sole figure in a radiantly lit area right after a gruelling gauntlet and boss fight. He is basically the Dark Souls equivalent of the "princess is in another castle" guy.

— @bobo1618-og

[05:27:31] - Ash Lake

[05:36:38] - Tomb of the Giants

Its amazing how art is a constant rorschach test. How you perceive it and what you take away from it says so much about you. Matthew's tangent about the "inevitable heat death of the universe" colors his faith in humanity's history and the lack of acknowledgement that it could be wrong.

Tl;dr he needs Jesus.

— @KhairoAetos

[05:53:39] - Darkroot Garden 2

[06:04:31] - New Londo 2

4:50:53 Well it kinda does happen more often... Everywhere where the basic Hollow-pattern enemies appear, they get stronger and stronger the further you get into the game. But their AI, appearance and moveset is identical, due to how many you fight you don't notice

— @totallynuts7595

[06:15:29] - Kiln of the First Flame & Ending

Demon's Souls Commentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLItPEpkK7A

3:08:09 jump attacking the Dragon butt causes it to stand up. Unknown if this was intentional or a leftover from development, but it does create a shortcut to Priscilla.

Thanks once again to Matthewmitosis for the help.

2:38:10 It took me years to realise -- it's the pressure plates throughout the fortress that rotates/ resets the lever. If you jump over them, the position for the boulder launcher doesn't change.

Perhaps that's still an unsatisfying explaination, but with how tricksy Sen's is, I can easily believe there's an underlying mechanical system driving this.

Oh right, this is the video with the retarded purist view points. Because of course every mechanic must have a realistic explanation. The game would definitely be better with a limited inventory.

This video is a cathartic masterpiece for any Dark Souls fan. Like a commentary track on a great film by a knowledgeable expert.

Today's the 10th anniversary of this upload! One of my favorite videos, and a yearly watch for me since it was uploaded.

I feel like your complaint about the gate in lower burg is pretty ridiculous.
Like doors that lock from the inside aren't anything special, any bathroom door works that way

Havel not breaking through the door is simply because he's hollow. Hollows constantly stand around doing nothing. It's not that he can't break out, he doesn't because he's hollow.

One thing i like about Capra is that he has an unused mechanic, that makes him slightly more interesting. He starts out with only 1 dog, and the second one bursts into the arena once you took off 50% of Capras health. Some mods restore that mechanic, and it makes the fight better.

The trigger for Lautrec killing Anastacia isn't the Gaüing Dragon.
It's either picking up both Firekeeper Souls in Blighttown & Parish, or ringing both bells, whichever happens first.
Speaking of Anastacia, it's pretty brutal. Not only was her tounge cut out she also has no legs. With the blood stained skirts description it is pretty obvious, that whomever locked her there smashed her legs, so she can't flee, and muted her so she can't talk about it or ask for a mercy killing.
So in a sense just killing Lautrec and leaving her to her misery is actually pretty horrible.

There is one spot in the DLC that explains why the framerate in Blighttown is so bad, you can make an unintended jump to a hill, where some enemies stand with their AI disabled, because they are intended to ambush you and jump down. Whenever you get the attention of any enemies on there, the framerate completely craps itself, because the pathfinding AI goes nuts trying to get enemies to get somewhere where they can't get
Blighttown does the same thing, with the "other side"

The corpse with the sealers set is interresting, because it's a male corpse, while the sealer that went to Blighttown was a female. So its either a mistake, or the corpse is not the actual sealer, but rather someone that stole the set

I found my way to Ash Lake and the Tomb of the Giants long before getting the lord vessel. Made for some extremely memorable experiences as I had to make my way back out of both without teleporting. It was frustrating in the moment but I’m so glad it went that way

could the firekeeper all be witches serving a penance for the Demon flame creation?

It would be nice to have this type of video on DS2, 3 and Elden Ring

I've seen this video start to finish several times but I still come back to it when I need something to listen to in the background. Matt's commentary is brilliant, insightful, and just fun to listen to. That anecdote about Kirk still makes me laugh, plus, you can't get that kind of experience from any other medium. Video games are special.

2:43:00 This bit doesn’t make much sense. Hurtboxes don’t dictate anything about how a character looks, the 3D model could be the size of the Empire State Building for all it matters. The real reason all the humanoids are standardised is due to them all sharing the same skeletal animation rig and animations. If you start resizing the limbs the animations start to look all messed up and you might have to mess with the skeleton or even, god help you, redo all the animations.

One of the best games ever made, even with its rough edges. It's a real shame it's the only game in the series with such a seamlessly interconnected world

3:53:12 LIKE A WHAT?!

@Rosee_PPS
@

2:38:00 this whole tangent about the lever moving by itself: I am almost certain that there are floor traps that determine this. It's not the lever turning itself, but pressure plates on the floor that change its direction as you traverse

@JackBz

its incredibly crazy how this game looks better on ps3 than the remastered version on ps4/5

@waveflakk

This takes me back to a time where Fromsoft and this series was something special. Now it's just mainstream slop with hundreds of "GET THE BEST MOST OP BUILD" videos and a type of game that's just oversaturated yet still doesn't understand the things its inspiration teaches.

I remember watching this commentary after giving up the game twice. I was sort of convinced that you needed a complex build to beat the game after the first playthrough was so frustrating for me. So I tried some pyro build I found online and I still couldn't beat it. However, watching you go through the game with such a basic loadout really inspired me, and I started another file with just a spear and shield. I ended up blasting through that game. Really what I was missing was confidence in myself as I already had the tools to persevere. I have since continued to enjoy these games, always playing a simple and humble knight on the first go. I even named my first Elden Ring character after you. So yes I did get some value out of those 6 hours.
