Video Overview & Insights

In this episode of Minutes With, we had the privilege of speaking to criminologist David Wilson about his unique 30-year career interviewing and profiling murderers. David reveals his interactions with 'The Muswell Hill Murderer' Dennis Nilsen and why he learned to never trust a serial killer.

Thank you to David Wilson for taking part in this episode of Minutes With.
David's podcast This Much is True Crime is available to listen to here: https://open.spotify.com/show/7LDW6sa8USs7AUO3NUhjKb?si=05129871355f4c01

We discuss psychopaths, British serial killers Lucy Letby and Harold Shipman and David reflects on why centring victims and analysing the friction in our society can put an end to serial murder.

Thank you to David Wilson for taking part in this episode of Minutes With.

(Apologies to Peshawar in advance-this is Important, and this analogy is the clearest way I know of to show the Concept:)
There is a big difference between having The TWINKLE (In Your Eyes and Soul) and having something I call 'the Peshawar gl*nt.
Follow Your Angels, not your ang*r.
Keep Yourselves Above the Fray, and Keep Your Intentions Positive, so you WON'T be in floods of t*ars for years and years.

Why are you criticizing dramatists for not being statistically correct about murder? That is not their responsibility. Their job is to tell interesting stories, not to give a perfectly, statistically correct picture of the world.

I mean the clear difference between punching a bouncer and punching someone who fouled you on a rugby pitch isn't class, its because one was on the street and one was during a match. If he'd done what he'd done in the street, pretty sure he'd end up with the same outcome as the bloke who hit the bouncer.

He kinda trashes the FBI method of serial killer profiling and then basically describes how he does serial killer profiling and deduces the motivation behind the killing.

I am so happy he started by telling the story of the parralelpunched and how they were identical but treated differently. I stopped watching right then and there and didnt waste a seccond more on the video. This is the kind of guy that would consider a graped kid to be just another day in britain and would not prosecute the immigrant because it wont consider it to be a good deed. Such a bunch of belonny ! The 2 punches were worlds apparts and it'sobvious why went to jail and the other simply got to continue his life without going to jail : 1 hapened as an immediate pain reaction (which can easily be considered as self defense but was punished anyway as he was sent off the field) while the other one was a premeditated vicious, nasty and vile action taken against a party which was not involved in the original conflict and didnt do any harm to him in the first place ! it's pretty obvious to any normal person that one is a menace to the public while the other is not !!!!!!!!!!! such a disgrace !

Pretty sure this guy is among those responsible for the decline of the UK, its not about class and privilege, a drunk punching a bouncer is far more punishable than punching another player. You have no idea what the other guy did in the bar to get thrown out. If he had punched the referee that would be comparable and he would have probably been suspended and likely sent to jail.

β€” @stevetaterus8303

32:48 - 34:45 - Centring Victims

Keep regurgitating the same old BS about 'education'. Well, 'educating' them has been part of the system for decades now and it doesn't work and hasn't worked. It is the equivalent of 'We just need to build more recreational centres for the youth' This is the academics cure all for adult and youth criminals who carry out the most horrific crimes on a regular basis that destroy entire families, not just a single victim. Whenever you hear a news report of a horrific crime being committed by a perp who has a wrap sheet of serious offences a mile long and you ask, 'why is this person on the street?' Just thank an academic.

A "criminologist" who doesn't understand the difference between a "foul" in a game and punching someone in the face and breaking their nose? Hahaha! Then spending the first 8 minutes lathering his own ass and trying to convince the audience and himself that he is great at rugby. And the incredible insight that "you can never trust a serial killer". Wow! What a revelation! Yep, I am checking out on this one.

Interesting that a criminologist and a well educated one at that, goes with the modern narrative that everything that victims suffer is a phobia. A phobia is not a hatred of something it's a fear of something, often irrational. The misuse of the word phobia has created multiple victim classes, rightly, or wrongly, which signals that certain parts of society are more, or less worthy of special treatment based on their classification. Women are attacked often, but is it called femophobia? No

11:35 I remember watching a Ed Kemper interview many years ago, and he claimed the guards would watch him on camera and talk to one another about how smart he was. How would he know that?

That, and many similar situations with serial killers, I noticed they are control freaks with deep insecurities. Insecurities so deep and traumatic, I truly believe they live by the code if I tell ya id have to kill ya. If they feel vulnerable, it makes them kill

They won't say so because to admit you're deeply insecure is to be vulnerable

People don't care about the victims. Nobody cares who the pirates, the vikings, the romans or the mongols killed. People love the adventure, the danger and the loot. The person who died to this is irrelevant even if millions died because of it and some of them in the most horrible way.

I have seen David on numerous programs on Serial Killers, etc, for years while never known anything about him beyond a few credentials they flash on the screen. Now his background makes much more sense to me. Thanks!

When Prof Wilson was talking about the killers he had spoken to. It really took me to the interviews of Jeff Dahmer, Manson and Ted Bundy. I think it was netflix where I watched a series about criminal psychologists trying to understand these individuals more and, same as Wilson, why they did the things they had done.
Wilson saying that Nilsen "talked shit" and "wouldn't shut up" is what these criminal psychologists found with many of the killers they interviewed, particularly one person who I can't remember the name of, who did play mind games with his interviewers and got their trust to continually talk to them.
Where as Jeff was different, once he was arrested he opened up about what he had done right from the beginning and almost mirrored Nilsen. Except he killed on impulse because he didn't want them to leave and even lobotomized one lad so he can have company with someone who isn't a corpse.
Is a fascinating world but fuck me is it dark and at times morbidly bleak.

Putting the murdering aside, why is there so much re-offending and is it mostly to do with the opportunities for a clean life once someone has served their time?

Homophobia isn't nearly what it used to be.

It is easier to go after a handful of killers than to try to protect hundreds of thousands of "vulnerable" people. Some went after the elderly and kids, you can't guard millions of people. He wants to solve homelessness also. Good luck with that, they've been trying for a century.

Being self aware and having self control isn't "privilege". Anyone can have it.

I still think education is key, knowing what makes these people into deviants and how to prevent these crimes. Relationships, mental health, abuse, society, employment, attitudes, environment, economy, education etc all need to be addressed

After a teaching career I learned some very basic truths.
There are certain tells that can make one question and check veracity.
It helps to ask off centre questions when a student recounts an event, such as what happened just before student M smacked you in the face?
I will stand by you and advocate for you as far as I can, and only if you tell me the complete truth, can motivate a more clear and honest response.
Many times that a student doesn't tell you something, or evades a simple question, that tells you more than what they actually say out loud.
Please don't be offended, but I have met some very scary kids that display similar traits of serial killers. If you can not make any kind of social or emotional connection with such a child, then they may be lost.
I met 3 such students over my 25 years. I was afraid of 2, but for the other, I wept.
Finally, to my main point, Pay Now or Pay Later. Hire teachers support staff and create programs for students in need. Pay now and the child can develop and become happier and have have a better chance at life. If you choose to Pay Later you will pay to house and care for adults that haven't been able to be part of a peaceful society.
