'Condemn the abusers!': James O'Brien reacts to Reform MP's 'bizarre' post

Video Overview & Insights

James O'Brien and Shelagh Fogarty react to the video posted by Reform MP Sarah Pochin, in which she calls on the England World Cup team to keep winning in order to keep women safe from domestic violence.

Yikes. What a remarkable take.

— @simpatico4004

The Reform MP posted a short speech onto X in which she encouraged the team to keep up their good form at the tournament because domestic violence 'goes through the roof' when England lose.

Thomas Tuchel's side beat Croatia 4-2 in their Group L in Dallas on Wednesday evening, but Ms Pochin wrote in her caption: "For the sake of women’s safety we need England to keep winning".

Evil 👿 to core..

Going by those stats, maybe by her logic, Pochin should campaign to ban the England football team completely, to reduce domestic abuse?

tone deaf. How could you accidentally finish talking about such a serious topic with such a crass soundbite?

And she is one of Reform's leading lights.😂 I wouldn't give this idiot the benefit of the doubt, on anything!

It's because they ONLY have ONE track - they play the politics of division every chance they get - there's no solutions offered, ever - just vile rhetoric to stir up even more hate - and the sinister part is that they KNOW they're doing it - it's rage bait and it's disgusting!

I’d call it instrumental stupidity where the threat of stupidity, and its consequences, are used to manipulate people.

You won't ever please these clowns! If they do well they are miserable, and if they don't,, they use that as an excuse to take out their life frustrations on others. 🤡

This felt like a dog whistle to the domestic abusers to me. I'd like to joke that she clearly knows who her fan base are, but that wouldn't be leaving this topic with the respect it deserves ...and I have more than two brain cells to know that DV abusers come in all styles, shapes and forms.

Most of the research suggests it doesn't matter if England win or lose. Domestic abuse cases go up the same either way. The catalyst isn't men being angry their team lost, it's that men are out with their abusive mates, drinking and generally being abusive.

Take alcohol out the equation and you'll likely get zero incidents of domestic violence. Dont blame the footballers.

A fourteen year old did all of that to an old woman to steal her money to buy sweets, crisps and chocolate! That means they did it just for the fun they got out of doing it. What kind of evil sick ish is going on here? The poor baby never stood a chance from day one.

@jujutrini8412

I would contend that the abuse goes up as a direct result of alcohol consumption, not the footballers losing.

Pretty sure she didn't say it was the footballers fault, James. It's just a matter of fact, and she was calling it out. Not once did she imply the fault lay with the footballers. I think you will be embarrassed by this tomorrow.
