I cry when I hear these songs..

Revisiting this years later, gotta say “L-Shaped Man” was brutally underwhelming. “Zoo” felt disjointed but promising, it felt like they were one album away from perfecting the new sound they found on their Matador debut. Instead we were treated to a shockingly generic post punk album that was as every bit as biting as an REM greatest hits disc. Drastically changing your sound isn’t always an “evolution.” “Rohnert Park” was a caustic and incendiary take that made the hardcore punk formula feel totally reenergized for the 2010s. That was an original album with a style that felt like it belonged exclusively to Ceremony at that point in time. This record, and this single in particular, sounds like it could’ve come from any band that lists off Joy Division as an influence. I mean, Jesus Christ, it sounds almost exactly like Interpol! What Ceremony tried passing as a bold artistic decision really just amounted to them unwittingly becoming carbon copies of dozens of other bands, when they previously marched to their own beat. Just because Ceremony hopped over to a genre that is considered by critics to have more artistic merit doesn’t mean they “evolved.” Going from being a standout band in one sound to being a paint-by-numbers band in another is a step backward, not forward. I don’t think time has been kind to the “L-Shaped Man,” and I think it’s quite evident from the events over the years that followed, that this album severely stunted the trajectory of Ceremony as a band. They’ve never been held in quite the same high regard as they were at the turn of 2010. Oh, what could have been.

I grew up a couple hours away from this band's hometown and nothing they've ever written has hit me as hard as these two songs. Don't get me wrong, their early stuff is fire, but these two songs just hit a different way.

heard these guys at the turnstile tour last night, fell in love with this song instantly. Immediately thought of joy division fucking awesome crazy crowd.

People do need to remember that the 1st wave of hardcore was happening at the same time that the o.g post punk stuff was coming out too and then certainly, mutually, into the early- mid '80s. Hardcore sorta latched on to more metal influences going into the early 90s, which some bands, like the 1st wave pv'ers had slightly allowed into their sound but also yielded to noise/ambience and noise/ambience has always been a mainstay with post-punk bands and other sorts of sub-genres that kept the more so mid-tempo/ slower sound paired with 'emotional/chthonic' themes that became goth, death rock, dark wave, neo folk, various sub sub genres of industrial. I don't see where Ceremony's sound is "sounding like" in this music video to be too much of a veering off point from their o.g sound. I mean, they covered Red C! Their heads were always in an anachronistic place from the get-go.
