Video Overview & Insights

BREAKING NEWS TikTok Person discovers punk music and demands for it not to be political.

I like NWA, I never robbed a bank, lots of musicians just be saying things, might not even agree themselves. Doesn't mean we have to believe or do everything they sold to us with a catchy hook.

— @tripletap1

In this video, we dive into the growing trend of people asking genres like punk and metal to be less political. We’ll talk about subculture history, commodification and randomly spider-punk.

I like Cannibal Corpse, never "Hammer Smashed a Face", not even once.

I like Cypress Hill, but don't smoke weed anymore. Still like the music.

@tripletap1
@

I think music can be political, and people that might disagree with some of the lyrics can still enjoy it too.

Punk without politics is like orange juice without oranges.

Modern day punk would be alt right

The main issue is Punk was mainly concerned with pushing back on societal norms; anti-consumerism, anti-corporatisms, anti-authority, individualism, DIY etc. Now obviously this ties into politics, but the problem is when politics take precedent. For example, today "Punk" and "Metal" is associated with the left. But the left promotes social welfare and larger government. This goes against anti-authority and individualism as you're dependent on the state; you're becoming a slave to the gov't and they dictate what you can do with your money. The left locked everyone inside for a couple years during Covid while Red states were free. I'm not saying "Punk is conservative" as both parties miss the mark significantly in different areas. However, "politics" in the alt scene has become a campaign for the left.

Can we keep politics out of metal/punk = i do not want bands to make me feel bad about being a racist, homophobic, ignorant piece of trash. Ok go listen to Kid Rock then.

@randymarsh1554
@

Punk is at its core antipolitical.

@jvillain9946
@

Politics is the core element of punk it's a message about rebellion in the form of music, it's about getting angry at authority, it's about fighting an oppressive system that aims to crush us all under it's big boot

@ellerybyrd1360
@

No.

@oburato7632
@

So you like political punk, but only when it's leftist crap. Got it.

@Smoking_Man
@

they know nothing about metal

@genedunlap8384
@

Leftists are like the person who needs multiple partners for constant validation. That’s why they want their favorite creators to obsessively talk about the issues they “care about”

Nose ring theory is undefeated

Imagine telling everyone that they must have politics in their music, sounds like conform to your politics or else you aren't punk, yea there is a lot of political music in punk and metal but not everything is political in punk and metal and I also don't have to agree with whatever đŸ˜ș political views the L's in this comment section hold

@Ev3rClaire
@

Punk means anti establishment no matter who's in charge.

@kcrttheking
@

Maybe YOU can not; I am interested in music AND in politics, and the fact that I know pretty much about both of them is one of the reasons that I'm definitely NOT interested in the mostly quite obscure and not very educated political opinions of the musicians I like to listen to, as I really don't want to know how Walter Benjamin or Ernst Bloch were playing the guitar, in fact I didn't even listen to one of Adorno's compositions and am not planning to

@gaston616
@

Why do others opinions bother some so much. I can listen to music that has nothing to do with my beliefs and enjoy it as long it is good. I’m an old Gen X guy and can remember when we could talk and accept others ideas without trying to cancel any view we didn’t like.

@donhopf
@

Can we keep Christianity out of Christian music 💀

@SuperMilesBrochannel
@

oioioi we have more hate punk songs than love all punk songs skin heads love punk and neo Nazis punk is not for the left losers

@justinbbradford
@

Punks are just nasty lefties who are equally as ignorant in their politics as in their knowledge of scales.
I'm an Iron Maiden man myself. Now, a band like that can actually bridge the divide because they sing about life from a truthful perspective, without filtering it through the bias of either the right or the left.
They're open-minded and INSANELY talented.
Don't be some nasty Henry Rollins type
Be Maiden.

@TroyBaugh-wu7ek
@

politics in punk imagine that hahaha, totally not like it is a core part of the genre to hate fascists and conformity, totally not.

@count_dykeula
@

"No we can not" - a fascist.

This is ironically what fascists say. Punk is dead and liberals amd leftists killed it with fascist tactics.

@tallguyadventures
@

Punk rock sucks

@blakew953
@

Additionally People who don’t get involved in politics in general and don’t care about world affairs and problems have the luxury of doing so

@imperialbricks4217
@

Leftist trash: "Be more political."
Me: "Ok." writes songs about how leftists should be globally exterminated
Leftist trash: "No...not like that!!!"

@dirkdiggler7771
@

15:51 this is the reason he’s my favorite (being anti establishment), but also why any merch I get of him has to be handmade

@CrackedOutCrow
@

The core of punk has always been political, they are inherently inseparable.
The core of metal isn't the screamy vocals or blast beats, it is the courage to speak up on matters more mainstream genres would rather sweep under the rug and ignore. Which inherently involves topics that are considered political.

@Zinetha
@

I think it is important to know where it came out like people saying punk cannot be right wing but they can because both right and left punks wanting to be exist as a individual and wanting big corporations to go down it just a bit different which ı think most people forget that punk's real point is DIY so yeah you can be right and punk and you can be left and punk. Same as metal.

@DHEKREATİON
@

"can we please leave the milk out of the cereal" ahh take

@johannr2658
@

As someone who normally is tired of politics everywhere I go...I know damn well that rock songs are going to typically have politics or social issues in it. ESPECIALLY IF IT'S FREAKING PUNK! When I'm listening to rock, I'm ok with listening to politics at that time.

@IronVultureSkyPirate
@

Honest question becuase i e seen a lot of opinions, can you be cristian and be alt/punk

@malakaifr
@

punk until you insult my favorite multi million dollar company

@sonnynerd4735
@

"Punks" just simp for the government now. They hate all of us regardless of what side your one.

@dellystinky
@

“can we leave jesus out of christianity?”

@gecchanluvr
@

Chickenshit conformist by the Dead Kennedys

@Thy_Chance
@

i remember listening to psychosocial and actually really listening to the words and being like "holy shit this is so real" and then going on a rabbit hole reading slipknot lyrics like omg this is all so relatable its crazy which is when i went into research, learning the whole alt movement is political based
ive dressed "alt" my whole life and have had alternative ideologies since i was a wee lad
listening to more alternative music is what made me connect the dots and find out being alt was being political
i dont get how someone could listen to the music and not see it as political

@zoecantafio
@

Do what you want because a punk is free. Gatekeeping punk isn’t really punk but who cares. Also calling the white supremacist band as cosplaying punk is crazy because it’s also anti conformist, the irony of the comment.

@rixyl7475
@

Artists tend to be inspired by analyzing cultures and humanity, then holding up a mirror of what they see. All art is political. Even pop art, which is propaganda

@subtlegong2817
@

I’m an old original punk.Fuck all politics.I laugh when I see a band that tries to throw its weight behind a certain party.That non band foo fighters jump to mind.62 and I still hate the mainstream,leave all that to Taylor and her ilk

@Kennydamned
@

So johnny rotten gets no say.

@ianmurray8925
@

Dips politics are the base of punk and metal .

@Kissmyass-e1s
@

dudes patches says it all lol

@DannyDevito-x4t

@DannyDevito-x4t

He's got a white T-shirt on, I bet he can't even name 15 songs from screwdriver

@jackcommonman1381
@

So I would like to say don't remove politics from punk. Rather if you are going to make it "political" be open to discussions and different perspectives. I am frustrated that punk kills itself by being hard to understand. You get results like the misunderstanding that came about with minor threat guilty of being white or the song mentioned nazi punks f off. It becomes empty rhetoric until you have conversations related to the info presented.

@friedenbaum
@

"Punk" that isn't political isn't punk.

Right wing and nazi "punk" isn't punk.

@justvic4771

@goth1155

Out of Metal? Sure, but Punk? No, I get that scene and the Hardcore scene have hinges their integrity on.
