Berlin: 9 reasons why the German capital city isn't very German at all | Meet the Germans

Video Overview & Insights

Rachel moved from the UK to Germany in 2016. As a relative newcomer she casts a fresh eye over German clichés and shares her experiences of settling into German life. Every two weeks she explores a new topic – from saunas to asparagus or the ins and outs of German small talk.

Do you have any more examples how Berlin is different from the rest of Germany? Tell us in the comments!

— @dweuromaxx

This week she's off the to the capital city, Berlin, to find out more about its unique identity and how, in so many ways, the city and its inhabitants are not at all typically German.

Do you have any more examples? Tell us in the comments!

Makes sense, right ?

Much of Berlin seems like what NYC once was... Arts & Culture are good character builders... So what if I don't get into the clubs? I've been to enough of them (both exclusive and not so) in NYC, Detroit, Chicago, and San Francisco in my younger days, so at this point in my life, you've seen one club, you've seen 'em all!
However, I DO like the graffiti all over the place, though 😊

I am german and I hate Berlin with a burning passion. Such a trashy freak city that is leeching on the rest of the nation, gets nothing done and terrorses us with their unhinged politics that come from the bubble they smell their own farts in.

most Germans can't stand Berlin, just like in the Prussian days a massive money drain

Berlin is northerneast German culture but in a giant international city.

multiculturalism tolerance and especially veganism a pretty north European thing due to the post protestantist mind. Though i say Berlin is still more conservative than Amsterdam, and food culture is better.

I lived in Munich for a while back in the early 90's... and they had some really cool nightclubs... that were equally difficult to get into. One of them was just open one night a week... in one of the museums... and you had to go in through the service entrance in the back... if you even knew that. And, yeah, getting in was certainly not guaranteed... unless you were a really hot looking girl... or knew one of the door guys or promoters.

While some of the things are accurate, some of the things were totally wrong. For example, having options for non-meat eaters, being non-religious, and being somewhat left leaning, are things common to any advance city in the world, including many German speaking cities cities such as Hamburg, Munich, and Vienna.

Berlin, I'm here at the moment, is relatively gross. My first day I saw a guy shooting up, with multiple holes in his arms bleeding all over. Graffiti is everywhere, drunkenness uber alle and street folk also, literally everywhere. it's not clean generally and filled with non Germans. The black/Goth look is also everywhere, as if we were back in the 80s and Berlin never got the message, the movement is long over. Everyone is fully tatted, piercings and dudes wearing dresses, LGBT voll and also, surprisingly, a lot of children. Though there are certainly cool buildings and things to see, overall, Berlin is pretty Ick.

"The capital has lower than average salaries and higher unemployment." Why are you lying? People come to Berlin because they want to earn more money. If it were'nt possible they would'nt come here. Just think.
