I've actually personally experienced the Comix Zone bad ending.

To me what makes a bad ending is starting at the very beginning of the game losing all the progress

In luigi's mansion 3, if you fail to escape from king boo, or if you lose all your lives, or fail to defeat king boo, then the ending shows luigi and his friends and family in paintings as king boo laughs wickedly.

Not sure if this counts but the 2003 stealth horror game Manhunt technically doesn't have a bad ending but when looking at the lore behind the game, it clearly does. Let me explain. If you haven't played this game, nothing that I'm gonna say is going to make any sense to you. I highly recommend you play the game yourself (avoid the steam version because it's bad) or research the game's lore.







At the end of the game, you infiltrate Starkweather's mansion. You confront Starkweather's previous snuff film star named Piggsy. After defeating him, you have to kill the last Cerberus guards protecting Starkweather. After you deal with them, you take Piggsy's chainsaw and confront Starkweather. The game ends with the main character James Earl Cash hacking him to death with a chainsaw. One of the most satisfying villain deaths of any game imo. Starkweather's empire is exposed by the journalist and his snuff film ring has come to an end.


Or... atleast it should come to an end. See if you look at the game's manual there is a mysterious character in the game that is heavily implied to be the real master behind Carcer City's snuff film ring nicknamed Mr.Nasty who is never mentioned nor ever seen in the game once. Essentially meaning that Cash has never really took down the snuff film ring only giving it a major setback meaning the ruthless violence, corruption, and degeneracy that came with it has only continued. On top of that, not even the journalist gets out of this game unscathed as there was interview with the journalist on Rockstar's official website showcasing that after the journalist has fled Carcer City, she has suffered imense psychological trauma and paranoia from the brutality and is being held at a mental institution due to the fact that she has claimed to have seen Cash alive and well despite also seeing cash being a death row inmate executed by the state at the beginning of the game when in reality: Starkweather bribed the law into using a sedative instead of lethal injection for the purpose of keeping cash alive as the next snuff movie star. As a result, the journalist has the most tragic story out of all the characters while also being the most virtuous character in the game. Graphics might be n64 level but the speaking moving mouth physics is next level. Like the devs had no buisness spending soo much time and effort on mouth physics but you have to hand it to them (or mouth it to them) they did a good job

Corpse Party, probably the most infamous example. Yes you get occasional duds but when it's the 90% where it gets brutal? You FEEL it.

I personally love a bad ending but I feel there is a major difference in how it feels between one where you fail to reach the good ending vs when you choose the bad ending. When you fail you feel bad knowing you were good enough or made a mistake and failed to reach it compared to making the disconnect from human and monster to reach that bad ending. Undertale’s Genoside Run, Baldur’s Gates multiple bad endings, Infamous 1, 2, & Second Son’s evil routes. I love them.

For Pikmin 1 specifically; it’s not 25 parts, it’s 25 *Required* parts the ship MUST have to take off properly. Forgot that there is an actual bad ending in Comix Zone that isn't just the game over sequence. Just like the Spiderman vs. Kingpin game you have to beat the final boss under a certain time limit, or else the captured girl character gets killed. In the Comix Zone ending, Sketch gets back to the real world but his comic book burns as a result of her dying, so he contemplates about doing it all over again just to get a second chance at saving her.
