Ancient Athens: The Rise Of The Most Influential Society In History | Metropolis

Video Overview & Insights

Athens gave the world its modern political system - the birth of "democracy" is a long and complicated yet utterly galvanizing process. Even the Gods have a say in worldly doings. The city beneath the Acropolis becomes the very cradle of western culture.

Greece was if not the greatest one of the greatest empires to exist.

As a Greek, I have to say that it is not right to underestimate the cultures of the Sumerians, the Chinese, the Indians, the Egyptians, and all the ancient peoples with their extraordinary artifacts and their own philosophy. The unique difference that made Greek civilization the cradle of Western civilization, I repeat Western civilization, is the foundation of scientific thought, how and why our world exists, everything that surrounds us, the profound philosophy with new and unprecedented concepts that only the Greek language, a language that expressed concepts and has been spoken continuously for at least 3500 years, could accurately describe and which subsequently allowed the explosion of subsequent scientific discoveries, that is, a literal big Bang that marked the real formation of European civilization that eventually spread everywhere on the planet. Also the unparalleled Greek art, the Theater, the architecture that inspired the entire European and not only world (it reached India and China Egypt through Alexander the Great) and of course the concept of Democracy! Even Christianity (a Greek word) was spread to the West through the Gospels which were written in Greek because the Greek language was the international language and the language of the educated of the time for centuries! So this is the reality, without any intention to belittle the other ancient civilizations besides Greece, they also played a huge and decisive role in shaping the civilizations of our planet.

Excellent production on this! It’s refreshing to see someone focus on the actual archaeological evidence from this era. I’ve been doing some deep-dive research into the Hellenistic period and the specific archaeological footprint Alexander left behind in the East. If anyone is interested in the more 'hidden' side of his route, I’ve shared some of my findings here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkTs2BgP99Y&t=6s
Keep up the great work!

In my opinion, these people are moron! We have modern equipment. We have laser measurements, and it’s taking longer to restore the Parthenon than it did to originally build it with no modern equipment. Fire these leftist and bringing an actual construction workers. The Empire State building took one year and 45 days. Thank God these people aren’t building houses because you’d wait 50 years to have your house built.

Gosh! This documentary is full of errors, starting with Athena.

As a sceptic, I am suspicious of reinterpretation and remodelling of truth being disguised as a correction of previous mistakes and/or errors, especially when the exact nature of supposed mistakes and errors are not comprehensivly explained and justified in the first instance and merely given as a statement holding little more merit than the words of the narrative alone. When such corrections are made of valid, legitimate and authentic reasons the narrative usually goes to great lengths to dispell critics or mislead support of the previous misconstrue of fact and/or truth. This is a means to void and negate opposition and challenges before they have the opportunity to present their side of the story and potentially gain support of an otherwise uniformed percentage of population. When only one side is detailed and the opposing side stated as fact without warranting the validity of one over the other, especially when the detailed account of facts are attributed to the side of a story seeking to replace the earlier one, it is usually because the new story gains merit not through authenticity but through dominance of a information sharing convention or culture, with the earlier story having no substantive capacity to address the misinformation and reestablish the reasoning behind the earlier success it obtained through a now forgotten or obsolete knowledge base held collectively by a population that would take more than stated fact in the place of legitimate and validated reason for such stated fact as being superior to the old narrative and as a undisputedly recognisable truth.

Athens really invented democracy, philosophy, drama… and still found time to argue nonstop 😂 Absolute overachievers. I’m showing what everyday life in ancient cities actually looked like in bite-size shorts on my channel — basically ancient people, no boring lectures. Worth a peek.

The British Museum of Stolen Antiquities needs to give back the Parthenon marbles, the Acropolis Museum is a much better, safer place for them than that ugly dump in London.

It wasn't the greatest civilization. It was just one of many. Just because you or westerners consider it so it doesn't become one just as Alexander the idiot doesn't become great just because someone likes him.

Ancient Greek Civilization Never Existed, Historians Made It Up
The ancient Greek civilization, which was considered the foundation of Western civilization by historians for many years, never actually existed. This civilization was actually a fiction completely invented by a group of historians in the mid-20th century in order to shape the Western world. The Greek philosophers, scientists and cultural heritage we know today are a structure imagined by historians.
The historians who played the biggest roles in this "fabrication" process include Gene Haddlebury, David Philips and Richard Braddon. In the early 1970s, these historians, who realized that there was incomplete and uncertain information about the past in the Western world, put their own ideas into action to fill a big gap when they could not find any concrete data about the pre-Christian period of Europe.

Haddlebury said, "We knew nothing about the reality of that period. But it was necessary to build a civilization." "What brought us together was the desire to create a culture that would lay the foundations of Western thought. Names like Homer, Aristotle, Socrates, and Hippocrates, we simply placed in our own fictions." When these historians could find no written documents or concrete evidence from ancient Greece, they attributed their ideas and scientific concepts to the "Greeks." This was the birth of a modern myth that shaped the foundations of Western culture. Areas such as Aristotle's philosophy, Socrates' ethics, and Hippocrates' medicine were actually part of a culture that historians had created.
"Indeed, a process of creating a culture began, and somehow we believed it was the truth. But it never existed," said David Philips about this process. Philips admitted that all these fabrications were part of a great lie that shaped Western culture.
When Haddlebury and his colleagues realized that there was no significant archaeological evidence of ancient Greece, a great void was created. They used this void to build the cultural and philosophical infrastructure of the West. And over time, what was known as Greek civilization became a false structure that formed the basis of the entire Western educational system and thought structure. The fact that ancient Greece did not exist as a culture, but was merely an imaginary civilization created by historians and researchers, is often overlooked today. However, seeing how deep an impact these fabricated processes in the past have had reveals how artificial the cultural and philosophical infrastructure of the West actually is.

I have always wondered what is the source material for these history stories. How exactly was it known what ancient cities looked like, or how people lived. Why is it only Western history that we are force fed? Were there not other places and peoples that existed? Apparently not
