Independence truely is the American spirit. BTW I grew up in Williamsburg, VA. right next to Yorktown , also im a COMBAT Veteran .Infantry. The battlefields are incredible, as are the many battlefields from The Civil War.

Sad how some Americans have such a disrespectfull view of the French. Washington would probably spit on what America has become. Probably gonna be gone by the next century, that debt can never be paid.

So instead of marching towards New York we went south unexpectedly fought a smaller portion of the British army with the help of the French. Once we defeated them the British army in New York was basically screwed? Sorry for the over simplification

Yeah, but that war wasn’t over because in 1803 or thereabouts the federal government by way of the judiciary begins delivering the final death blows to independence and only today are we seeing the outcome of the battle👁️➕👑. 📜🟰🗽🕊️⚖️

Very emotional. The great American Patriots and Warriors killed thousands of people and won Independence. We must thank the French who had not yet learned how to surrender. Now, 2026, America is in the making of another great war. The domestic enemies of America occupy New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Austin Texas, Seattle, Eugene Oregon, Washington D.C., Minnesota, New Jersey, Detroit, Denver, Santa Fe, on-and-on-and-on. The war to purge the USA of the Communists Democrats will be bloody. Let's roll!

How was it 700 miles from New York City to Yorktown? I am in Winston-Salem, NC. My GPS says it's 462 miles to New York City from Winston-Salem, NC.

My 5th Great Grandfather was Infantry Private in the 11th Virginia Militia. After the surrender and the American Victory he was escorting British Prisoners to Winchester, while marching he broke rank and grabbed a Turnip to eat. Big mistake! His commanding officer Major Welsh Broke his jaw for that mistake. For the rest of his life his nick name would be Jaw.

Thank you gifted creators of Clear Present History. We have so much to be thankful for and especially to the men who pledged their lives to the cause of freedom. And gratitude to their families who encouraged and enabled them to fight on despite unbelievable odds.

I feel that based on my limited understanding of this historical period, the British knew that when the colonies erupted it was an already unpopular war both at home and in the Americas. After all, the colonies were asking for taxation with representation that is not an unfair request given the deeply corrupt and sick monarch who's name I will not name for her was a disgrace. In the history of the British empire few monarchs were detested as much as that one. So, the timing is also quite prudent that despite the houses of parliament in London and many sympathises to the colonies requests for greater representation, that that odious fool the monarch outright refused all requests setting in motion the most unpopular war at that time period.. I say this as I Brit. I'm glad to see that you show the historical context too the French played in preventing relief and allies of the u.s, as some would like to forget that American independence was impossible without their support and sacrifices. Infact, it was the French that brought the war to a close as prior to their arrival it was an indecisive slogging match.

I reside only 50 miles from the Yorktown Battlefield Park however I have not visited the site. Route 17, a 4-lane road splits the town of Yorktown which continues into Newport News, Virginia 15 miles further south. The traffic on southbound 17 is heavy and fast at rush hour like it is pushing you past the Yorktown turns without giving time for thought. The turn from Rt 17 into Yorktown is minimal with limited signage directing the way into the battlefield park. This turn into the park is very strange somehow like the battlefield park is, for reasons unknown, hidden intentionally. This section of Rt 17 is mostly treelined around Yorktown, I believe, making the area even more a mystery. I will be making this short trip very soon. I must see the Yorktown Battlefield. I am fortunate to be this close to such a historical battlefield. Actually, Virginia is not in short supply for battlefields considering the Revolution and Civil Wars.
