Adam Savage Meets Real Ancient Swords!
Video Overview & Insights
In an earlier visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Arms and Armor conservation lab, Adam was able to touch historical armor (in the form of armored gauntlets) for the first time. THIS visit, associate conservator Sean Belair treats Adam to another first: the opportunity to examine -- and handle -- an array of period swords dating back to the 13th century!

For those disc shaped pommels how would they have gotten the hole through them? Surely they're not drilled but I can't see them being punched either unless they were punched in thicker parent stock which was then cut off.

I'd laugh if the handle snapped off

Thanks for watching!
If I picked up that second to last I would have to say "my name is Enigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die."

..Wow..
@_Type1Wayne_Great video! Really enjoyed it.
@OmanN-h9dDude you the reason myth busters failed
@Killjoy888For fucks sake, be careful man.
@HampanHKLove that last peter pan sword
@aidenfielding97097:05 .... 1415 KCD3?
@BauksHuh I thought swords where thicker. Wouldn't they bend or break in battle being so thin and flexible?
@estebalstigopopoluzwow, under 2lbs for a full tang sword. i wouldve never guessed that. the metallurgy and blacksmithing from ancient times was just mindboggling.
@tagg946The second sword presented looks ideal for cutting down lightly armored opponents as a heavily armored knight
@Judicial78these guys are smart
@Just_The_KrustAs a dyslexic person, I’m glad that professionals confuse centuries compared to the year. Why they do us dirty like that?
@ThePladiatorI wonder how many lives each have taken
@torvamessor666What the fuck is going on with Adam's hair !!?
A pound and a half !? That's ridiculously light !!
"I don't think you even need that length in combat." Is what the dead guy said.
@shaneheiden5448A fun blacksmith market would be so fun 😂😂😂 let's gooo. Jk
@Joey-j8b4fWell at least I didn’t use a spoon…
@MrAnaheimification"Its nothing like Holding something that someone made" thats it. ! And i understand it so well
@HansWernerSinn0815The chain inlaid rapier looks like Indian or Muslim guard. Probably just for standing at the ready infront of a door or palace.
@chronesrt2925No idea how they came up with the idea that Paratschwert was made for someone super wealthy. It's just a common Paratschwert...
@leichtmeisterthe ghosts of all those swords owners stood around that table an interesting crowd that would be
@S0MBRXWhy is the shot at the start where they pan over the swords so flickery? (Well, not only that one, but thats the one where it is the most distracting.)
@DrGadget604The look he had taking the handle of a weapon that most likely killed at one point was peak male fantasy 🤣🤣
@jarlkarl3577This is why I HATE fantasy swords that weigh like 20-30 pounds. Most swords were very light.
@moosepawpawlmao at Adam freely bending a 600 year old sword in front of Sean
@geoff3610The third to last one looks like a backsword
@IndoCalrissianThese simple swords were the things that shaped and ruled the world by most of our ancestors.
@21jtkAdam is so neurotic he's slinging around a sword from the 1200s like it is brand new. Highly disrespectful. Handle ancient artifacts with care, not like a wild toddler. Goofball. You can tell the host is not pleased.
@DavidPT40calling the 13th century ancient is extremely american behaviour
@PopcornSkorpionI never knew real swords were so light! Everything i have is much heavier! Wow
@LouisFML1@12:20 i know where you can find another original sword like that and many other originals from 1400 to 14smthg. Its in germany, a place called like the castle where all of this is part of the museum and the name is "Waldburg". Been there so many times cuz its so amazing to see all that medievil stuff. ❤
@haptikberlinI have a Solingen kitchen knife. I have done SO much damage to myself with it I am horrified!
@hywelthomas5515People freaking out about adam handling these swords need to understand that swords are built for battle. Holding them and flexing them isnt going to hurt them especially when they are in this good of condition
@AymungoosNo signs of battle in these blades?
@arliceyoung1043Thank you Adam, for taking us along for the ride. And thank you for, antiquity master of arms!
@arliceyoung1043Bring out the Gunblades!!!!!!
@arliceyoung1043I got nauseous when adam started bending the artifact from Alexandria
@AirzGamingTTVThose aren't ancient. They are medieval. Ancient is pre-500 AD.
@anubis1416Im from Croatia, and we were against Osman empire, second sword makes me curious. I would like to know more about that... If anyone knows...
@SICKELMI got really close to a sword from the 991 Battle of Maldon. It's in the Combined Military Services Museum in Maldon, Essex.
@YorkshireBeachStonesits funny they're wearing gloves and acting as if they're fragile. They will outlive the men that are showing them off.
@AmericanSteve-n5wThe identical one to no. 2 that was "floating around" was found in Texas.
@gyre-88Fighting with guns is one thing but fighting with edged weapons hand2 hand on horseback in some cases too. Then add on top of that no real medical treatment. Those boys had a rough.!
