I played the demo of Age after Age in a recent Steam Next Fest. It seemed to have a lot of potential, but has problems with pacing and needs a better tutorial, as it gets very complex.

Bergfried (The Berg pronounced more like the e in emerald, Fried was mostly correct, like Sister Friede from Dark Souls 3) is German, basically just meaning keep. For anyone interested to know.

Bergfried looks like something I wish Stronghold was. It actually looks like you are building a castle instead of just a fortified town.
@GlibberleAs someone who comes from a nation famous for hill/mountain castle/cities I can't wait for Bergfried. It may not look like a Mediterranean city but it's close enough.

@s.n.c.999Out of this list Age After Age looks the most intriguing since I'm a huge fan of Anno, though I will reserve judgement until its a bit further in development. Bergfield also looks interesting as a mix of city building, RTS, and tower defense.

@HKBSirNiclasWhy do they all look like low-res cartoons? With modern computers, I thought by now we'd have basically photorealism games. These look like something you'd play on your phone. Caesar 3 looks better than these and it's 30 years old.

Man, I was extremely excited for the KingFish until I heard rogue-like... I hate rogue-like, don't understand this type o gameplay loop
@TheNetsThanks Zakh -- I now have 2 new games on my wishlist and both had demos. The Stamperor game is really different and Age After Age looked interesting.
@larkendelvieI think in 2026 pre-modern city builders should switch to gridless city designs. Apart from Roman themed ones, I can't stand seeing tents or huts in neat rows, connected by perfectly straight roads.
All because of the Foundation. 😢
Age after Age could be considered if it adopts gridless organic building, otherwise Manor Lords will be bug-free and exit beta in 2056.

I knew Stamperor, because I discovered the demo a while ago (don't remember where/how) and I enjoyed it a lot! I also have Hearth and Hamlet on my wishlist, I've seen it in a similar list before, not sure if it was one of yours or from someone else.
Adding Thveit to my wishlist now and I'm also gonna try the Age After Age demo and hopefully add it to my wishlist afterwards 😊
Bergfried looks like it has the best castle building out of games inspired by Stronghold.
It looks like this is the sort of ambition the original franchise needed.
For me it's not so much about grid-based vs freeform, but what layouts the map design inspires.
Here you build things that actually look like fortifications. Meanwhile, in every Stronghold game you usually build walls in 1-3 directions, with 10 towers on one side of a wall with 50 archers on each...
Dinolords also looks promising but I'll have to try it to see how I feel about the dinosaur aspect.
Thx for the list! Age After Age and Bergfried seems have the esthetics/graphics and gameplay that suits me.
