Zohran Mamdani: The Democrats' new power broker? | The News Agents

Video Overview & Insights

There was something of a political earthquake in New York overnight. Three left wing Democratic candidates, endorsed by Mamdani, sweeping out established Congressional characters and hailing in a new era of progressive politics in the Big Apple.

I hope Burnham is watching New York

— @jonathanfell688

Mamdani's political stardust shows little sign of waning - is he now the most powerful figure in his party? And what does that mean for the future of the Dems?

We speak to Ben Rhodes, one of Barack Obama's closest aides during his presidency, and author of a new book 'All We Can Say' - a history of America through political speeches - about the magic of Mamdani, and the malice of Donald Trump.

Volume of adverts making this now unwatchable

Is the US political system that different from the UK of the 1980s and 1990s ? When Thatcher was PM her government had traits of Trump, (politically) aggressive toward neighbours, tax cutting as an article of faith, welfare reduction etc. The Labour party initially took a harder left approach with Michael Foot, certainly anti-establishment and copper fastened the Conservatives in office for 17 years. Social democratic candidates may be popular among the Democrats 'progressive' wing in parts of the US that is historically more left of the US political centre such as New York ,but will it succeed with the crucial independent voters, especially in the Midwest and Southern states? The Democrats already have the progressive 'enclaves' nearly all located in already 'blue' states. Will doubling down on 'progressiveness' help in the rest of the country ?

People want fighters for the people not politicians who back down at the first disagreement with some excuse. Platner seems a fighter and the accusation they threw at him are honestly kiddie stuff compared to what the current president and his lot have done.

The question is do you want a polished person who will vote to fund ICE and Israel or do you want a feather ruffler who will not? There is a list of other questions like this.

It starts in America. And will eventually spread all over the west. We are all sick to death of corrupt corporations . Politicians. The judiciary.and Establishment greedy neoliberalism. The people who have paid the price of greedy neoliberal trickle down economics. And paying for corporate welfare.

Not to mention the elephant in the room...the state of Israel.
Last nights wins in New York was about putting the US first not Israel.
Watch out I can see the same thing happening in the UK.

And Mamdani delivers! That’s very important! We are so used to politicians talking stuff to get elected and then not following through! Mandan is trustworthy. That is a light in this darkness.

The Democrats in their fear of being viewed as bad with an economy swung to candidates who stink
of corporate. People who seem more focusssed in appeasing markets than voters and become this conveyer belt of similer talking and believing candidates. They are now finally realising that markets will react badly at first with whoever you put up as a candidate, then settle down. Now they are offering candidates who actually get what the public in America want. They don't want hand outs or a free ride, but a fair ride. Saying to people that billionaires should be taxed properly and not leak the money away from working people and so on. Saying to people that cars entering your city polluting the air and killing your local businesses should be charged for doing so and the moneybraised can improve public transit servicing more people. It's not scary politics, it's fair politics.

The reason Mamdani is most like Obama compared to the other Democrats is because he's the only one not trying to be like Obama 😂

The reason the Democrats & Labour (here in the UK) have failed so badly is that they ‘talk’ the language, of being for the average working person but continue the policies that favour; elite’s, finance & big corporations. Then to add insult to injury, they went ‘all in’ on virtue signalling, whilst their voters lives got increasingly worse. To their voters, it felt they were being mocked.
The centre-left had got to offer something different. Their problems:
Money has seized power
States have sold their assets & are in debt
People are so frustrated they won’t wait to see if things work.

The DNC leadership is spectacularly out of touch, it's a cowardly, corporation-pleasing entity that is still acting like it's 1993. Their reaction says it all. The Schumers, Jeffries of the party just do not get why they are despised.

A thing I hear throughout the podcast is telling that "the party" has embraced mamdani, "the party" has shifted on Israël. It hasn't.

It's the voter base that has been asking for strong policy for the lower classes, for working social programs, for curtailing corporate abuse, and yes, for the ability to see obvious war crimes and call them out.

The leadership is as calcified in pro war and pro corporate positions as ever.

The missing link is clearly what you refuse to see and address. The big taboo topic of all. It's not about incumbentcy, it's about what they stand for.

Why do Western anchors keep pronouncing Mamdani as Mandami? And they expect people from other ethnicities to know about their pronunciation aberrations such as Leicester should be pronounced as Lesstur, etc. It's racial arrogance, where no serious effort need be done to pronounce names of other cultures correctly, even one as simple as Mamdani.

Zohran mamdani ❤

@Hassan-lx5kj

The ‘Democratic Party’ is not fielding these candidates. These young people are standing and fighting for their positions within essentially a 2 party state. How long did it take for Mamdani to get endorsed by some but not all of the Democrat leadership?
Mamdani is not a kingmaker in the Party. He is supporting candidates in New York. He is working with a coalition to make New York a success. They are building on the work they did to get Mamdani elected with all the young people they mobilised to get rid of Andrew Cuomo.
Mamdani won back the voters who supported Trump because he listened to what they wanted - affordability!

It’s simple it’s happening everywhere working poor and middle class people are sick and tired of the same old establishment politics that only catered for the rich. I mean look at how unpopular Labour and the Tories today in Britain as well as how unpopular it is for both establishment Republicans and Democrats in the US. Britain needs a figure like Mamdani.

Please don't compare Mamdani to Obama !
Obama was more of the same - his main accomplishment was identity politics

@ToBeHonest666-n8v

I believe you two are missing the key ingredient behind Mamdani's success and that is : he's the only politian in the last 10 years who is actually delivering on his promises and to prove that point his approval ratings among new yorkers has increased since he was elected. Yes he's articulate, intelligent and genuine but he's also not beholding to anybody else but the people of new york. Big money dies not belong in politics and it's about the corporate dems get in line with this policy or risk been steamrolled by the new democrats now challenging the status quo.

It’s never been about incumbency it is about issues relevant to a new generation which the incumbent is out of touch with and in this case it’s clearly not one generation but multiple generation , congressmen who have been around for decades , who have no idea what the future looks like. One gets more conservative in life as one gets older due to the burden of knowledge and ‘ experience ‘ in life.

Donald Trump and corrupt Republicans are supported and corrupted by rightwing corporate corrupt billionaires and socialist Democrats aren't. Majority of Americans wants politicians to focus and focusing on the interests of working class rather than focusing on the interests of corrupt corporate Republican billionaires that's why socialist Democrats are backing working class. They hate corrupt corporate billionaire oligarchs. Socialist Democrats. JsmesvTalarico and Graham Platner are also anti Israel. Americans hates rightwing Zionist pro Trump Israeli lobbies. Donald Trump and corporate Democrats represents Republican oligarch trillionaire Elon Musk and billionaire Jeff Bezos also Mark Zuckerberg. They're destroying liberal democracy in America, Europe and all over the world. Ellison's and Palantir is also doing the same Koch's and Murdoch's are favouring Donald Trump and Republicans. Capitalism only benefits capitalist Republican trillionaires and billionaires not benefitting working class Americans. Republican trillionaires, billionaires and millionaires are using their money to fund Donald Trump and they're destroying liberal democracy. It's becoming authoritarian dictatorship.

@SandyP-t8y

It's not incumbent that is the problem, it's the overt special interests that influence current reps. People are beginning to see the mask drop. Put simply, they haven't sold their constituency down the river to get into office.

@reecepalmer8868

These kind of people will focus on the optics. Trump says the right things but the difference is that Zohran backs it up. Emily is such a hack, nobody is simply "sick of incumbents" they're sick of incumbents who do nothing with their power. Have they heard of Bernie Sanders? It takes a split second to THINK, I beg you to THINK.
