You can only save one— who do you choose? - Doug MacKay
Video Overview & Insights
Puzzle through the ethical dilemma where two ships are in distress but you can only save one, and decide: which do you choose?
Preito
--
You are the captain of an interstellar cargo transport headed to port when you receive two distress calls. The first is from a labor ship, whose passengers are running out of oxygen. The other from a luxury space cruiser which has lost a thruster, sending them careening into danger. With only enough time to save one ship, which should you choose? Doug Mackay explores this classic ethical dilemma.
Shayna, they bought their tickets. They knew what they were getting into. I say, let 'em crash.

Save the college kids, hold them as ransom, get paid by their rich parents, profit. 💸💸

obviously the 30 people. also, you were notified of them first. if the 20 people were found first, idk. but i think the 30 people in this situation. a life's a life. it's not about how much happiness, gosh. every life is a right - it's not worth more if they're happier. a life's a right. 30 rights vs 20 rights. 30!!

The closest seems the most logical. All will die if you spend too much time debating who is worthy, but you have more of a chance to save some people if you go for the ship that takes the least time to get to. In an emergency situation it’s not about class, it’s about prioritizing on the likelihood of survival.

Duh you choose the one that asked you first.
@Nest-ohhFirst: Safety first. Second: First come first served.
@CurrentPotentialLet the rich die. They would be lucky I wouldn't explode their ship myself
@blood_rose_queenI would go with the 1st group. If they are losing oxygen rapidly every minute counts. Also they're closer.
@LaineCahillThe working class ship both has more people in it, and was the one whose emergency happened first. Ideally, a second ship would be available to save the rich ship, too, but in this scenario, the rich ship is out of luck. The limited resource of "help" had already been exhausted.
@briannab.2330i was thinking of flipping a coin and letting god decide....i didn't realize it was the right answer
@TheQuaint1Thirty vs twenty?
Save the poor ones. You'll save more people.
None, and then take the loot.
@SemmSkillI dont like them rich fucks.
@gamenmetlink605To chose the lesser of two evils, I would pick the 30 people, since there are only 20 on the other and I would be saving more lives
@WhimzicalWizI choose the workers because they are 30 in number. And the students are 20.
Save the greater number
I save the 30 workers first, then I save the 20 college students, then I'll have them fight eachother for entertainment.
@C2O4I would choose the workers because if they really are not living good they might ahve families that would be very reliant on them and could be even worse off if the workers die the college kids thought it would haunt me it would probably haunt more then to think about the families that probably rely on the workers
@Reverso412Free labour so save the first one
@BusterTimothyLobaWe all know that its gonna be the rich ones: While the captain is taking a decition the president of Earth call saying that inside the cruiser its the son of some billonaire and if your dont save him, you would be sue and fired.
@lucasortega4052But like... Is the rich ship going directly into an asteroid? Because for what i know, in an asteriod belt, asteroids are pretty far away from each other.
@PiIgualA3.1415I’d bomb the Pareto and save the workers. Eat the rich. If I captain a space ship, it will only be because I’m a pirate
@ThuderDragon2408flipping coin is dumping matters just to physics
@mrhohoAstroid belts are mostly empty space, the students will likely be fine if we save the workers first and then go for the students later.
@Deilos_pizzagamePerfect situation to save nobody 😂😂😂😂jkjk
@mon3eyovereverythingrealistically is who has the better chances to succed, if a save need to be made and one has like 3% and the other is 80% be it 30 - 20 or the opposite doesn really matter because one can think is illogical to risk for such small odds, true right or wrong dont exist in this cases if we want to be truthfully is a loss regardless so i not about win but damage controll which change the problem drastically, and potential unlimited arguments can be done
@gymmilaqueno2779First come first serve
@Ironmetal015I'm saving the construction guy chances are the rich guy is on the glorbo list (space epstein)
@Mr_ZandySave the workers an asteroid field is very wide
@CharlieTheWarlockHow many ritch parents willing do give me large sums of money for saving their children do the workers have?
@TrazynTheInfinite-007One of the only ted videos I disagree about workers need more help and asteroid belts are mostly empty anyway
@SlothOnYTMake the Mallory 7 deploy a ship to the Telic 12 while the Pareto is saved by the transport
@Not14Redmi-t5oAnother option to decide would be: who would feel more right to save?
In this specific case it seems like the workers would show the most gratitude. The people going on holiday may feel more entitled to be saved.
Still, in an irl similar situation the opposite may actually be chosen. The public cares more about a flight they could have taken themselves, than one of specific workers. So the outrage for one option would be bigger than for the other. We care more about things that feel closer to our own situation. The more we just look in our own bubbles, the more we'll choose the second option.
Try reading Marx. Maybe you stop asking pointless questions and ask why on one rich man there is a million poor.
@Шкурапсевдогиганта"Captain, can you hear something? Like an alarm for a distress signal?"
"Must be the wind..."
"Alright, full speed ahead!"
The poor middle aged workers will likely experience less happiness for the rest of their lives because they aren't likely to gain more wealth, while the rich college students will likely experience more happiness because they probably will stay rich.
@NathanaelWilderChoose the group you are most likely to save successfully?
@aghast1652You make an emotional decision. I know which I would pick. Then you use intellect to support your decision, there being sufficient leeway to argue for or against either possibility.
@stevekru6518coin flip.
@CambriaDurhamI would save the ship that i was assigned to save first, which is the one with the 30 middle aged workers. If I was assigned to save the 2nd ship before the middle aged workers ship, I would have saved that one
@BluBuzz847The first they are seemingly closer and in more need. An asteroid belt is very empty normally as space is very big. So the student can wait assuming their crew can't rigged sonething up.
@KarcenThe average distance between an asteroid belt is 600,000 to 1,000,000 kilometers in the asteroid belt
