Why Transfer Fees No Longer Make Any Sense
Video Overview & Insights
Football fans are obsessed with transfer fees, but could it be that they are not only nonsensical and relatively unimportant, but actually meaningless?
Sandler and Adele and not fitting analogies. They are not salaried employees of Netflix or Sony respectively. Apart from the fact that EU labour laws also do not apply in either of those examples, their contracts are very different. As an employee they should have a regular right to resign and then join another employer at the end of the resignation period. However, and that's the problem for players, the same is true for employers. Meaning, if they are unhappy with you, they could just fire you. So, I think professional football has kind of willfully ignored these labour laws as all sides benefit from this system. Also, the money is in the system already. Meaning, it would likely just shift to inflated wage bills rather than transfer fees. Wage poaching would likely be completely out of control.
A lot of fees or asking prices this summer, for the likes of Yoane Wissa, Nick Woltemade, and Nicolas Jackson, have prompted people to ask what has happened to transfer fees and how they are determined.
So in this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at the progression of transfer fees, why they no longer appear to make any sense, and whether they should even exist at all.
It’s relevant because top transfer fee players are expected to be “worth the top fees”🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️

Most people are employed at will meaning they can lose their income anytime… a footballer on 100,000/wk 4 year salary doesn’t have that
I’m sure a player could sign a weekly contract and play all over the place

I did talk about abolishing transfer fees & introducing a wage cap (not based on earnings) but this needs to be done together in a few years ( around 5 I think) because the other teams with no cap will steal your players
@itsmeme143010:00 “Premier League proven” is such a fucking scam😂 And this season has proven that 90 million for Fermin would be an absolute steal
@nikolaitregouetBayern is like that one boomer who can't face inflation, so they only buy non-branded products, but most of the time it's just as good
@fallengamer3000I am sorry Garnawho?
That guy isn't worth 10 million 🥀
4:09 "There hasn't been a world war since Neymar joined PSG."
As Fabrizio Romano would say, "Here we go!"
Just remember that Footballers don't have one single value. Every single club would have a different price they'd be willing to sell a certain player for rather than keep them, even if that player is the same player.
@koldonn111119:15 transfer fees are actually used in Baseball when players come from international leagues, and these fees can reach tens of millions as well, just not hundreds
@jack73364grfuhnuwefDecember 2025- Strand Larsen has scored ONE goal for Wolves and Wolves have managed a whole TWO points after only 13 matches!
@mogbabaBecause many of those clubs are used for money laundry.
@stemill1569In North America you simply pay with your future in terms of picks. A very good NBA player might fetch 1 good young player, 3 first round picks and 3 first round swaps.
@21nickik"Warum Überweisungsgebühren keinen Sinn mehr machen"
The HITC videos are great but translation via YouTube AI is just bullshit, the sentence is translated to "why remittance fees are making no more sense". Do not choose translated titles when uploading a video on YT, we understand English and so does half of the world, no need to do that.🙄
Very soon : Wilson Isidore 75 €, Hayden Anthony €, Crescencio Summerville 65€
@DanielMegoumSomeone compared Xhaka to Kanté? Who??!
I need names!
Its money laundering
@austin33785Football isn’t just a game — it’s strategy, drama, and heroism. Which player do you think defined this match?"
@FootballBreakdown-f6pDay 1 of asking for Alfie to do a video about the South African PSL and it's absurd rules and existence.
@qinisomntambo6146Can u do a video about How much referees & athletes got paid by bookies for match fixing
@kkiat424That Neymar transfer shifted the market 😭
@winnerwinnerchickendinner901Lamal best player in the world!? You lost me there
@kryptik7528I think the reason why transfers make no sense nowadays is cause the premier league is the only league that really got that TV deal type of money that allows them to constantly spend big outside of a few traditional elite clubs or Billionaire/state owned clubs from other national leagues so you have even the likes of newly promoted premier league sides or “small” premier league teams like Brentford outbidding “traditional” big clubs from the other big 5 leagues eg Valencia, Sevilla, Fiorentina, Lyon, Marseille etc. whilst those clubs have to scrape together a couple million for fringe squad players or unknown gems in lower leagues when they were known to field legendary teams/players and challenge for titles whether domestically or internationally (UCL/EL) which throws off the perception of transfers nowadays
@BlessedAnimeDudeIt makes sense for contracts to be binding because players can get injured and it makes no sense for players to become footballers if as soon as getting fired they would lose all their income in a contact sport that every year becomes increasingly physically demanding
@GreenDinoNugget2001He used jota pic
@Zone1400-t9h“Can you sum it up in a word?”
“Broken”
these are transfer fees buried into the minds...... hang on. What about the football fan in the cook islands that has no tv or internet.... how that happen?
@lordsinister1232Amoura was so cheap because the deal was made in his loan deal before he exploded at Wolfsburg
@xene_o_oArtist are paid in advance and get automatic residule income and can leave the contract at any time as long as they repay the advance for any work not yet completed.
@5thRaceputting sesko on there with hojuland when he already has over 100 career goals is embarassing
@SABOTEURFNBRI want a hull city jersey please
@elmapervez5616Bayern's GOAT 2013's entire team was build for less than 150mio 😅
@DerEchteAndrejBecause it's MONEY LAUNDERING... the biggest businesses in the world that billionaires love to invest in are Drugs, Trafficking, sex trafficking, CHILD trafficking, Child-sex Trafficking, guns... cause these "investments" have a 200-500% profit unlike building an honest company...
There... I stated the obvious!!!
Buying a football player costs more than buying a skyscraper... you can hide more dirty money in a football transfer than in buying the biggest real estate properties in the world... how old are you? 5?
The premier league is the super league. Other leagues cannot compete financially. There will come a breaking point and the super league will be pitched again by the other top 5 European legs.
@ZeeSips7:07 😂😂😂😂😂 brilliant
@dannyfoster6848Chelsea 04-onwards ruined transfers forever
@deevee82940:10 so true 😭😭 - as a lifelong Chelsea fan and Frenchman (amongst others) I found Neymar much faster than Chelsea and Italy (when we lost the final with the Zidane headbutt)
@oliverqueen5883Alfie can you make another video about vitesse? We recently got our licence taken from us and now we got it back so reckon its time for a new one mate
@SupernovaNaim130 mil for wirtz
140 mil for isak
80 mil for ekitike
76 mil for sesko
Judging players on their price tag has become useless ong
28:55 😂😂😂
@Akhona_GumedeThats the price of jackson
@ryder8296Inflation
@rezaimran98In Major League Baseball, players from Japan typically go from their top flight Nippon Professional Baseball to MLB via a "posting system", similar to a transfer fee. NPB wants to ensure they get compensated for their best players leaving. I'm not sure about how NHL and NBA teams do business with European hockey/basketball clubs, but certainly these transactions are far more rare than in the football world.
@rolandhaumann4248garnacho is a 15million pound player at best and 50 thousand at worst and averages out to about 250 thousand
@notTvrkBest player in the world? Yamal isn’t even the best player at Barcelona.
@cooperhawk988Alfie I disagree that it is at all "understandable" that salaries are not fully disclosed. hell a lot of these clubs are publicly traded companies! If you are too embarrassed by what you paid a player or by how much you make then maybe you shouldn't do the deal in the first place.
@rwalker0130In future link the blog in the description please, that's the proper way to give credit
