Why skilled immigrants stay in Germany (it’s not just for the jobs!) | DW News

Video Overview & Insights

Many immigrants complain about Germany’s high taxes, housing crisis, bureaucracy and lack of digitalization. And some say they don’t find Germans welcoming. And yet, many still choose to stay. Why? Here’s a look at what makes Germany appealing to skilled immigrants despite some of the challenges and drawbacks associated with living in Europe’s biggest economy.

I am not even german or live in germany but around the europe people are taking advantage of the system and that's the reason all europe now is so against immigrants..many of them are living only with goverment money and do not want to work or they are using the system like it's made only to help them and most of the time countries are losing money just to be fair with the immigrants..and like they say..they work in english only work places..I hate speaking german because is so hard..and I am not even oblied to do so but many immigrants are staying in their bubble and don't want to be part of the german culture and to learn the language..this is not a hate message..it's the reality..everybody comes for better life but without being part of german culture

00:00 The heated debate over immigration

Germany is a great place to be, the reality is that no matter where you go, there will always be a challenge when u are an outsider. The far right keeps growing because the news don’t stop talking about it, the main owners are all right aligned.

I am born in germany and immigrated to canada 20 years ago, my trades degree is not recognized here either. The mindset to come from a foreign country and just move in without any difficulties is mind boggling to me. No one asks you to give up your culture just because they expect you to adapt a few things like learning their language properly. Communication is key all the time!

Many don't understand or do research. Mostly Indian immigrants with good education background brings lot of expertise, Skills, Resources and Stable Family System. If they got good respect, Good space for there culture things ,food and music they make sure that country or region develop very fast.

Hope this won't affect me and other people who do same path as I am.

Well, nurse and physician are leaving. No help from the government there. Also the start up grant doesn't apply for them. And the Arbeitsagentur helps exactly zero. Germany is by no means developed regarding digitalization, not regarding international employees. It is catastrophic. People invest to go to Germany and find themselves stranded there.

It's on both sides. Employers want to manipulate immigrants and these immigrants love getting manipulated because even lower salaries paid in euros are better for them than they get paid in their poor countries.

I’m a female German STEM graduate with excellent English skills and international work experience, and I still struggle to find work here. It appears that one often needs to further qualify with a PhD, especially when coming from abroad.

Secret to fixing immigration: fair economic policy.
All goods are taken away from Africa for very cheap for the benefit of Europe and western developed countries.
The herd goes towards the greener/ nutritious/safer pasture.
Western countries should stop the colonial/imperial practices.
I guarantee you this will fix the immigration issues.

Even the justice system is discriminatory. You will in my opinion get a unfavorable Judgement if you are coloured and most of these judgments will be justified using a mesh of laws and paragraphs and so on. Like under paragragh x line x civil code book x subsection y amended by XX Law paragraph xxx civil code yy. However under law xy subsection bbb this court5 does not have power to pass Judgement in the case. The case is dismissed under rule xxx procedure yy and so on.

An immigrant who arrives unskilled in Germany and studies there is not a skilled immigrant.

I think there is a big misconception (especially among Indians) who think they are the skilled workers that countries like Germany need. It is true that there is a shortage of skilled workers in German, but the average Indian IT worker is not comparable to the average German IT worker. India has much lower standards and has always been a market for 'quantity over quality'. For exceptional Indian IT workers, there are always very high paying jobs in Germany.

From my perspective as a highly educated immigrant with years of experience, I have to say that the situation has not changed for me even after mastering the language (I am close to obtaining a B2 certificate). I still receive only job rejections, even though I have invested time and money into learning how to apply and present myself properly. All of it feels pointless when I have not received a single opportunity for an interview. Diplomas, references, additional certificates, proof of work experience — everything officially translated — and it is still not enough.

After almost four years, it is time to leave. I came to Germany for personal development and better pay, but I have not found what I was hoping for. If I cannot move beyond wages that hover around minimum pay, then that is a sign that I am not recognized here — and evidently not needed either.

Sorry, but tbh for women Germany is far from Good! Just a simple example - kindergarten (if you magically find it) is mostly up to 14:00 or 15:00. So, who is taking care after? And how does this align with a full-time job??? It just means to give up a job for at least one parent!

30%? In some cities is more like 51%. A German congresswoman sayed not a single main German city will have majority of native Germans anymore in the next 15 years... So it is not our country anymore.

@isabelmcneish4019

Everyone knows how bad or good Germany really is. I am working as a Working Student in the Finance department at Uni. Only 2 people in the whole dept are technical. I know they need more people, but I bet they won't hire. Massive discrimination. They say they want more skilled people, but at the same time, skilled people are struggling just because of this thug language, even in IT, where there is nothing to do with the German language. Now I understand why Germany is on the verge of chaos.

@arslan_latif

Because skilled Germans like myself move away. I live in Finland, because i can afford a house there. One which isn't helicopter parented and price-inflated by the government. Viel Spaß noch an die Leute, die in Deutschland bleiben wollen.

Not even close, I am having a really bad time in Mainz right now, as a skilled IT engineer I can't find a job yet. I am really thinking about moving to Germany was a really bad decision, you don't feel welcome and on interviews they don't even take you in consideration for the roles

@averagebodybuilder

After 2 years of being in Germany and over 300 unsuccessful job applications although having a PhD and work experience, I am now leaving Germany with my 3 kids in 40 days. English only jobs are scarce, secondary schooling is poor and the healthcare system is under pressure. Speaking German is a gatekeeping tool. The language isnt easy and the environment and culture makes it difficult...there are better places than Germany! Life does not have to he as challenging as this place makes it to be. Having resilience should not be glorified...!
