Why Microgreens Need Weight During Germination β€” Explained!

Video Overview & Insights

πŸ˜„ Why do microgreens need weight during germination β€” and does it really make a difference? In this experiment, we grew four trays of Kale microgreens side by side, each with a different amount of weight and cover during germination, to show you exactly how much it matters. The results might surprise you β€” it makes a bigger difference than most people think.

Do you still use the method of top tray and top tray weighted on soilless growing?

β€” @bernitaleadbetter6910

Here's what we tested:

βœ… Tray 1: Nothing on top β€” no cover, no weight

So helpful! I really appreciate you helping me grow for my personal use.

β€” @s.schramm6305

βœ… Tray 2: Damp paper towel only

βœ… Tray 3: Empty tray on top (cover, no added weight)

Great video...thank you!

β€” @rxbristol

βœ… Tray 4: 7 lbs of weight on top

Here's what we cover:

I’ve watched a lot of ur videos n I want to thank the two of u for ur professionalism. I also learned a lot. Because of ur videos im attempting to try growing micro greens. Looking forward to watching many more of ur videos . Love ur experiments.

If you've ever had uneven growth, leggy stems, or seeds that won't anchor properly, this video shows you exactly why weight is the fix. It's one of the simplest changes you can make for dramatically better results.

I love these experiment/comparison videos because I'm thinking about starting (for my own home eating and my cat's grass) and I want to skip all these steps and these videos really show the reasons for them well. I have a bunch of potting soil and don't really want to buy coco coir, so I'll look to see if you have that comparison and if not, it's a suggestion. For fun, it took me a long time to get that you were saying seed "hull" because it sounds so much like "hole" to my Canadian ear. Also, coir would sound more like cwa to us. :) So informative. Thanks! Did you pre-soak the seeds before this experiment?

would some sort of humidity dome help eliminate the need for a weight? Maybe make a humidity locked shelf or something idk. just curious if that would be equivilent to a weight+tray on top

What are the names of the trays that you used ? What size trays are you using. Where do you get those kind of trays at ? Thanks Cody P.S: Who makes the trays.

QUESTION: What size trays are those ? You normally use 1020 shallow, but those kinda look like smaller 11x8 ish sprouting trays (hard to tell scale). I'm also presuming the white mesh inserts are 5mm mesh ?

"supposedly" strengthening the stem seems about right, I can vouch at least in my experience growing other plants, I once had an injured tomato seedling that I decided to try and save. The stem was completely busted but still attached by the outer skin so I taped it up with a toothpick. That turned out to be my strongest plant and grew with this incredible knot in the base of the stem where it repaired itself, doing some research told me with a bulkier stem due to damage + repair nutrient transmission and strength were increased greatly. wish I had a pic now the knot grew to like the size of my fist

If I've not put any weight on the seeds, would it be too late to do it at day 3-4 or should I just start all over again? :)

What do you do with the potting soil/ coconut coir/medium after you harvest the greens? Can you reuse it or do you throw it out and start with fresh soil again?

Why would you not show the end result? most of your vid show the final result...

@onedudesmind

Suggestion for first tray - keep an inverted tray on top. This will ensure better humidity and full darkness compared to just adding a paper towel on top. Since it will be inverted there will be no weight on the seeds. It will give a better picture on the pure impact of weight on germination. Great video in any case!
