The Black culture in Can ada is totally different up there. Listen to the way Black Canadians speak. It is safer, but so much more expensive and super cold. The people are typically easy going and kind throughout Can ada.

Segregated communities in Canada, other than indigenous reserves which is a very different situation, are not a thing. I live in Ottawa, I am a white person living in a community/neighbourhood with a high ratio of new Canadians, and subsidized housing; though I would certainly not describe it as 'the hood'. It is working class neighbourhood with heaps of young and multi-generational families. My neighbourhood consists of ~40% racialized people and that consists of racialized people from any number of lineages; not specifically black, or Asian or Arab or whatever. The neighbourhood in Ottawa with the highest percent of racialized people is Herongate (next neighbourhood over from me) at 70%.

I used to live in the Glebe which is a wealthy/yuppy neighbourhood which only has about 10% racialized population. People of colour or marginalized people came to the Glebe all the time as there is a stadium and good gift shopping on the main drag. No one takes any note and if they did there would be a number of people who would push back on someone being overtly racist. I have never been worried walking into a predominately not-white neighbourhood in Canada and being threatened or harassed....no one gives it a second thought.

Airline prices has more to do with 347 million customers vs 40 million, than it has to do with US Capitalsm. I live in Toronto. It ranks mighty high on the Capitalist scale.

BUT, I can travel by train across southern Ontario for $15 or less. When the Toronto Rock Lacrosse Club started playing in Hamilton, a completely different city, I kept my seasons tickets because getting to the stadium is as easy and cheap as it was when they were in Toronto (albeit a longer ride). If you're going to talk about US airfares, you have to talk about the ease of regional travel by train in Canada - for pennies. Car culture killed rail service in the USA.

BTW, if ytou decide to check out a Rock game (and why wouldn't you?...fastest sport on two legs), check out 'The Burnt Tongue' restaurant...best soup you've ever had. And no cheese (well maybe in the french onion, or on the burgers).

Since you live in Montreal, if you haven't already, you should visit Vaudreuil which is just 30 minutes west of downtown; beautiful.

Montreal might seem walkable and in some neighborhoods compact because it was established in 1642 so compare it to parts of New York or Boston. I back and forth between Quebec and Florida twice a year so I get to see alot. The driving distance is 1,650 miles. By the time you get to August, the temperature is almost the same.

Why do ppl think Canada is cool. Toronto is lame. Corny ppl think they're cool. They're socially and culturally boring. Low wages, high cost of living, higher taxes, crappy winters, too many immigrants. It's a pathetic wannabe version of the US

Love you guys podcast. As someone who grew up 40 miles outside of Montreal let me say that Montreal is one of the great International cities in this world. It has a million festivals each year going on throughout the year. Never a boring moment. And more importantly for a major city it is much cheaper than Toronto or Vancouver.

About the racial segregation thing, as an Asian I've predominantly experienced odd glances or outright getting called out in the States (getting told to "go back to my own country" in the Midwest and walking into an all-black and white diner spot around DC that's known for their chili dogs and tangibly feeling like I stand out like a sore thumb as 3 tables of black kids, white kids and even the diner staff stared with wide eyes as I walked in and sat down). So far, race wise (and even security wise) I feel safer up here in Canada

As a Canadian who moved to FLA in my 20’s I don’t really understand what it meant to be Canadian. Boy did I learn fast and I hated the segregation and intrinsic racism from people who thought they were liberal yet all those lowkey, cringy racist jokes or comments. I hated the general population but one can always find ‘your inner circle’ but..:it will be small.
