Where did Russia come from? - Alex Gendler

Video Overview & Insights

Trace the evolution of Russia, from Kievan Rus to present day, and find out how it became the biggest country in the world.

this was basically obnoxious. a bunch of random facts completely lacking context.

— @elpretentio

--

Russia is the biggest country in the world, spanning one-eighth of the Earth’s landmass. But where did it all begin? Alex Gendler explores the epic history of the Kievan Rus, where characters ranging from Viking raiders and Western crusaders to Byzantine missionaries and Mongol hordes all played a role to create a unique civilization standing at the crossroads of culture and geography.

The Central East steppe people are the russian origins mixed with Vikings and others?

there are many mistakes here. first of all, Russia is not Rus, it was a part of it because it was a colony "Zalisya/behind the forests". after the baptism of Rus, the modern lands of Russia were for the circulation of slaves and were given from the Moksha and Finno-Ugric tribes. Russia as such begins its history with the arrival of the Mongols in the 13th century. and was called the Moscow principality by the way. The history of the great Kiev with the princes and lands they began to appropriate in the 18th century.

1:48 Oleg is not Rurik's son. He would have been a regent because Igor, Rurik's son, was young.

A faintly comic hugely oversimplified version, which completely ignores the contribution of Peter 1st expanding his territory beyond the Urals into the eastern lands. This silly account doesn’t even mention the Tartars and the Cossacks.

Hey, I'm from Russia and I'm interested in history. Frankly speaking, I'm so proud of myself that now I can listen to the historical information in English. When I imagine I'd been learning history only in russian, now I feel I'm gorgeous. Thanks for this magnificent video, really nice drawing 🤌🫦

The worst video on the entire channel. A mixture of propaganda and myths. Zero historical accuracy. It's the same as telling the story of the birth of the Roman Empire when asked how France came to be, or telling the story of the founding of London when asked how the United States came to be.

1:58 "Kievan Russ was born " - it is absolutely fake. Kievan russ as terminology was invented in 19 century, and mean "time of Russ existing, when capital was Kiev". It is never was the state.
So if you tell about Kievan Russ, so tell also about Novgorod Russ, about Ladoga Russ. Or dont tell it at all.
It is very important, because this history falsification run war today

This video is a collection of mistakes.
Modern Russia comes from foundation of Moscow city in 12th century, and it was called Moskowia until 18th century, when they have stolen the name related to Kyivan Rus from modern Ukraine, occupying it after occupation and genocide of Novgorod in 15th century.
Therefore, Kyivan Rus founded before 9th century is the origin of modern Ukraine but not Russia.
Moreover, Kyivan Rus had dukes before the mythic Rurik and Oleg. The last ones known as Askold and Dir were killed by Oleg.
Furthermore, as seen from the name the first and only capital of the Kyivan Rus was Kyiv but not Kiev and of course not Novgorod, which name meaning New City proves that it cannot be the first capital.
Finally, citizens of Moskowia and modern Russia were and are not Slavs. They originated from Hungaro-Finnish group and just speak Slavic language, which is actually closer to Bulgarian than to Ukrainian or Belorussian despite being placed with the last two in the same group.

Another historical word parade. You’re basically rebuilding a medieval chronicle with vocabulary instead of armies. Fine. Meanings, straight and solid.

Polytheistic religion
A belief system that worships multiple gods, each usually responsible for different aspects of life or nature.

Subjugation
The act of bringing people under control by force, domination, or oppression.

Horned helmets
Ceremonial or symbolic headgear often associated with warriors in art and myth, especially Norse imagery. Historically rare, culturally loud.

Revolted and drove back
Rose up in rebellion and forced an enemy or ruler to retreat.

Chaos ensued
Complete disorder followed an event, usually implying panic, confusion, or violence.

Ironically
In a way that is opposite to what was expected, often highlighting contradiction or dark humor.

Extending his realm
Expanding territory, power, or political influence over new lands.

A former outpost
A place that once served as a remote military or political position but no longer does.

Deriving
Taking origin from, or being developed from something else.

Princedom
A territory ruled by a prince or governed under princely authority.

Slavic paganism
The pre-Christian religious beliefs of Slavic peoples, involving nature worship, multiple gods, and ritual traditions.

Emissaries
Official representatives or messengers sent to negotiate or deliver messages.

Expulsion from its holy land
The forced removal of a people from a territory considered sacred or central to their identity.

Fratricidal disputes
Violent conflicts between brothers or close kin, often over power or inheritance.

Vied for control
Competitively struggled against others to gain dominance or authority.

Teutonic crusaders
Members of the Teutonic Order, a medieval Christian military order involved in crusades and territorial expansion in Eastern Europe.

Squabbles
Petty or minor arguments, often repetitive and unproductive.

Rumors
Unverified information or stories spread from person to person.

Hoard
A large accumulation of valuable items, often hidden or stored obsessively.

Swept through
Moved rapidly and forcefully across an area, often causing widespread impact.

Political maneuvering
Strategic actions taken to gain advantage, influence outcomes, or weaken rivals within politics.

That set is heavy with conquest, religion, and power games. History, in other words, doing what it always does best: repeating itself with different costumes.

You don't need to renounce and distance yourself from your own history🇺🇦, even when the conquering state🇷🇺 uses it
against you.
This is not Russia🇺🇦.
This is Muscovy🇷🇺.
Russia🇬🇷 is the Greek name for the Ukrainian medieval state of Rus🇺🇦(838–1240).The Greek name🇬🇷🇺🇦 that the Muscovites🇷🇺 stole from the Ruthenians🇺🇦 and illegally appropriated in 1721.
Muscovy🇷🇺 is the real name of the conquering state that steals🇷🇺 the history, culture, and traditions
of another state and then appropriates them for itself. Calling Muscovy🇷🇺
Russia🇺🇦 is the same as calling the United States of America🇺🇸 Great Britain🇬🇧.
